This is an interesting development (http://www.focusedevents.com/chrono_days.asp) from Focussed Events, the biggest track day organiser in the UK.

After signing on they fit a transponder to your bike (the bracket fitted to your bike can be kept for future events). They will then run the normal day, with briefing and sighting and groups. At 11am they study the collated data and then place the riders in the groups where there times are similar.

Data is available to the rider after the day has ended and can be used to recommend an appropriate group for the rider at the next event based on the riders times and the times of the riders attending that event.

Sounds like a good idea for getting people in the right group but it's bound to get some peoples back up. Egos bruised etc. And the split in to which group will be tricky if the day is full. It won't necessarily solve the issue of fast and slow riders in the same group. An interesting idea but there are issues.

Good idea, but I think Kiwi's are sensitive enough to cost as it is. Sure would make things a little easier from a course control perspective.

A group buy of about 50 transponders would be farken expensive, even with a significant discount for bulk thrown in. It'd be something a crew like Tim Gibbes lot would be able to do as a sideline, but only on days they're not covering racing.

Of course those with their own transponders would get a discount on the day, but at some point it gets to be uneconomical for the crew doing the timing.

The existence of any timing equipment would void any hope of insurance cover for the day (if any).
