Bloody interesting stuff Toto.
I wasn't aware of the threat of the second explosion. An "uninhabitable Europe" would be unthinkable.
Brave, brave men fighting an invisible enemy... Hopefully there is the same bravery shown in Japan.

Hmmm I think TOTO has been exposed to this stuff, explains a lot about why he is the way he is!

thanks Toto that was worth a look. Interestingly it wasn't only the Soviets that lied. When you consider how dependent the French are on Nuclear power their reaction is worrying. Thanks to some very brave Soviets, Russians, Ukrainians etc, we still have a Europe.

Having been in the area during 1988 I think I have found a reason for my hair falling out...
Looking at google earth... fook me, that was closer than first thought.:(

Luckily not.
Measuring distances is quite handy though!
Gorbachev's comments are very good.
Whenever the greenie bastards object to a power generation scheme, they should be shown a picture of Chernobyl's open reactor and offered that as the alternative, for that's the way they are driving the future.

I watched the whole thing waiting for them to tell me what it was they were trying out and whos idea it was.

Pretty sure I have read somewhere this week that they were trying to see if they could run the cooling system with the excess latent heat in case of losing power.
Irony much?

That was both fascinating and terrible at the same time.

So it was a Homer Sompson moment - "What's the worst that can happen?" well I pretty much guess this guy can answer that with a fair degree of accuracy.
The ultimate failblog entry - I don't see anyone topping that in a hurry.
I mean, I made a few bad decisions in my time and you get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realise you just fucked up and hey it's all your fault. but I would have liked to seen the dudes face the moment he realised it was a bad idea.
Still I must say I'm somewhat disappointed - 30yrs and no super heros.

Without asking the designer of the reactor what he thought of the plan. They were apparently worried about the 1 minute delay for the diesel generators to come online in the event of a blackout at the plant.
