I am a nurse, didn't matter about the severity of the damage at home & loss of all services,my family was safe & I was due at work for a night shift as a Duty Manager at Burwood Hospital

Left an hour & a half early for what is normally a 5-10 min journey. It was a nightmare,I waded thru knee high liquifaction/h2o with my uniform in a backpack to get to my car which had been moved to the footpath around the corner earlier to escape the rising water. The roads were horrific I drove into a slump hole & truly don't know how I got out but I did, yay! & the car still seemed to drive ok!

At Burwood the main entrance had been damaged,a side door was the main access.A huge amount of organizing had been done in the hours before I arrived & a triage area had been set up where we dealt with assessments, fractures, plastering suturing etc etc.Casualties arrived at the door in the back of utes & station wagons.Transfers from rest homes & evacuated wards at CPH arrived in beds, stretchers & wheelchairs in the back of huge freight trucks.Ambulances were only for the most seriously injured......

We were on generator power,no water and...worst!! managing 140 patients with no sewerage system was a challenge!!

What we did was not as extraordinary as what some people on the street did.We were in a professional environment with processes & structures to work with & amazing staff.

At the Emergency Department At CPH the flow of patients turned into a floodTheir staff were amazing doing the best possible in incredibly difficult, traumatic & emotional circumstances.Patients arrived on surf boards, ironing boards, the backs of utes,on top of police cars, bits of fences as well as ambulances. As well as crush injuries & broken bones, lacerations & head injuries were common.Helicopters were landing on the road, army vehicles were stationed at the lights...it was like MASH

Some normality is returning,we are doing elective orthopaedic surgery again & the flood of multi-trauma spinal & brain injured that were transferred around NZs intensive care units are returning to Burwood for ongoing care & rehabilitation. There are many horrifically injured people from the earthquake & the number of traumatic amputations exceeds anything reported in the media......

In the weeks ahead we will look after our staff -nurses whos homes have been destroyed or badly damaged, whose husbands/partners have lost jobs, children at displaced schools, elderly relatives that need support -some of these nurses will hit the wall....

Lucky to have such good nurses as we do in NZ, no wonder the rest of the world respects your qualifications and training. Thanks for all you have done to help heal the wounds

Good on ya Helen!

Yep Nurses don't get enough mention these days, yet they put in so much effort.

Talked to dad, he was on the street with his crew saving people. His stories are that of heroes - and he is so humble about it....pissed you off :) Act like heroes dammit cos that is how we will treat you!

I had no idea what "The Press" building looked like until it was on TV.......how the hell did he jump from one building onto what remained of the roof of that and then work cutting people out???? It blows my mind how the average joe in Chch just acted completely selfless and saved all those people.

You all deserve bloody medals, not the stupid "International Rescue Team" that was there on day 2.
People are alive, because of the response of EVERYONE (emerg services or not) who became selfless on day one.
You guys rock.

Bloody hell Helen one of our own telling it like it is! Shit that really brings it home!!

Your post made me think of all the people that have to deal with the on going injuries etc. We keep getting the number of dead figure and your post made me think of the injured! Scary shit I reckon! Might have to double my donation on the quake ride tomorrow because of your post!

You and all your mates keep up the good work!!

I wrote this three times and have decided I don't have sufficient word power to convey how much I admire you and your colleagues so I shall simply say Bless you all for being there. x

Nurses did & continue to do what nurses do best -looking after others....:doctor:You are welcome. As an Orthopaedic Nurse in Whangarei Hospital, I have been wondering how my fellow Nurses have been managing in Chch. A "Normal"day on the ward can be heavy going, and it is the Team work that gets us by, but that does not even come close to what you are having to manage in Chch now and for sometime to come. I bow deeply with respect to all you do day in and day out, AM, PM and Night to easy the pain of those in your care as you deal with your own.

Kia kaha, kia toa, kia manawanui ( Be strong, be brave, be steadfast and sure):not:

You're welcome. Words are never enough to express how valued and appreciated our nurses are! Your selflessness and caring manners do more than any drug could, to comfort and reassure those who are suffering and afraid. Your skills are legendary and having been (too) often on the receiving end of a nurse's care, my respect for the nursing profession is the highest it could be!

I can honestly say from when I was in hospital,

If it wasn't for the nurses I wouldn't have known what the doctors were talking about.
If it wasn't for the nurses I wouldn't have known what was going on.
If it wasn't for the nurses I am sure I would have lost my dignity. (they made some embarrassing things seem completely normal)
If it wasn't for the nurses I would have been in a lot more pain.

You are worth your weight in gold. In time like this, more so than ever.

That is one thing nurses are sometimes not good at. Looking after ourselves or other nurses. To busy looking after others.

I guess the "stupid" International Rescue Teams shouldn´t bother wasting their time and effort trying to help next time

Look after yourselves.
