so whos had their wisdom tooth removed
how much does it really hurt? i've heard its a real bitch afterwards

also recently my jaw is started to hurt when i open it (where it joins onto my skull), at first i thought it was because i was continuously chewing 24/7 but i was feeling around the inside and discovered a partially erupted wisdom tooth, anyone know if this would be the cause?
i can't see the doctors til next week so i'm calling kb for advice

Nicely said.

I was told I would probably need them removed by now.. apparently they are fine. They remove the tooth (needles and sharp tools  etc) in the way or something, not that sure as it was a while ago but I wasn't impressed.

Drink heaps before you go do it so you won't remember a thing :Punk:

Had the same thing about a year ago, couple of injections and in with the pliers, I could feel the pulling but with no pain

no real pain after the injections wore off either, just had to avoid chewing on that side and use some kind of mouthwash for a few days after it

With wisdom teeth, it depends how impacted they are. If the roots are deep into the jawbone you will have to be 'knocked out' for the surgery. Mine were taken out many years ago under a local. Should have done it much sooner. Your whole mouth will feel much cleaner.

the gf was petrified at having a tooth filled in. really histerical.. then they gave her a little white pill.. best thing she ever did. Doesn't remember a thing, but she was as funny as hell to watch. Every emotion you can think of in about 5 mins.. If you go for the white pill, get someone to film you ;)
and she recommends it. I hate stuff like that myself, but I'm getting a fist full of the white ones (sedatives) if I ever have to go in..

Yeah I had all 4 out 3 years ago, was no where as bad as everyone told me. A little bit of aching in the jaw the next morning but was pretty sweet otherwise. Only had 2 out at a time which would have helped, was back to normal in 3 days or so.

arghhh say it ain't so
i wish it was only a damaged muscle :(

I heard they also rape your wallets for the operation, ranging from $500-$1500
Someone please tell me the govt subsidises these operations

1) Yes

2) Hurts like shit, mind numbing pain

3) Sounds like it is just your time for the wisdoom tooth to play up

4) Mine played up over a weekend, only thing I found to give any relief to the
pain was "Oil of Cloves", got it from a chemist I think, dipped a cotton bud
in the oil and dabbed it around the tooth.

Good luck man,

F/F :ride:

Yep I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once.

But it was years ago... over 26 years back.... I was put under general anesthectic... as I have 'hooked' roots.

Ok that means that like most roots they go straight downwards.
My roots halfway down start to turn inwards... (like a fish hooks)
So it means that the teeth cant just be extracted.
I had to have my gums cut etc.

I was sent home in a taxi, not allowed to drive for 3 days and had a few days off work.

I unfortunatly somehow must of bitten inside my mouth during the night and I had a huge blood blister in the inside of my mouth and caused me to gag all day, until I pulled it out... YUK.

Eat only baby soft foods Dairy foods etc until the mouth is better.
Do allow the stitches to heal up the wound.

The dentist back then also cut my nerve endings... and I ended up with tingling in my mouth for a long time...
Things have changed since then with dentists...

Dont get put off by my wee horror story... The dentist was called Dr Hooks.

PS: If your wisdom teeth are mostly throu and now playing up it shouldnt cost that much if it turns out to be a straight forward extraction. It only starts to cost more if the dentists finds it difficult to get at them to pull them out. In the meantime take some anti inflamitories to take the swelling down.

PSS: My daughter had a few out last year... and it didnt cost too much at all... so do shop around and ask for different quotes.

ooohhhh it hurts it really really hurts. There is no escaping it!

The cost is about $1500 just so you can feel the pain. Had two out at the same time and I got an infection - go figure. Sucking yoghurt and scrambled eggs through a straw is pretty cool ... NOT!

Had 2 pulled last year, quotes from dentists ranged from $700 to $1200, mate told me to try my local A&E, followed his advice and the bill was $200.
No pain as mouth was injected to "numbness" and no pain once the injection wore off either

Good luck

Al

I only had one done and a few other fillings and it was about the $500 mark

My story is VERY similar to Crashe.

My ONLY advice is, get it done under general with a consultant dental surgeon, not the dentist down the road. If the dentist doesn't know what they are doing, you can end up with a football sized swelling!

Had mine done at a private hospital (health insurance). The feeling of going under with the anaesthetic is one of the best I've ever felt!

Woke up about 20 or 30 mins later, no pain, no swelling. A little residual bleeding and I was on my way (being driven by mum). Spent the weekend being fussed over, eating pumpkin soup with buttered soft bread (dip bread in soup, suck down :) ), jelly, ice cream and the likes.

If you're in Wellington, I can recommend the best. Send me a PM.
Dave.

Had all 4 out in one go, general anaesthetic - 1st didn't work, 2nd lights out. Woke up in chair, all over, stood up, fell down, on face. Went straight to hospital, 3 days later allowed out after finally stopping trying to throw up.

I shouldn't have waited till it hurt so bad to get the teeth out. The actual extraction was painless. The shitty anaesthetic caused all the problems. Two previous patients had minor versions of what got me.

Getting them out is a lot less trouble than the damned teeth can be.

I had all 4 out last year at Bowen hospital under general anaesthetic. I stayed pretty doped up on codeine for the week afetrwards but it wasn't too bad... I think.

how much does it really hurt? i've heard its a real bitch afterwardsWent to the dentist about 15 yrs ago and he told me my wisdoms are "coming through", recommended I get them out giving me the option of waiting another 12 months...I got them out 4 weeks later! I remember asking the same question you have about the pain, etc and some people told me that there can be some horrendous bruising as well. I didn't experience any pain or bruising but I know of some peeps who had completely the opposite experience.

As far as the pricing, can't remember what it cost me back then, but when has the dentist EVER been cheap??

Now open nice and wide...

First two went while I was still in college...... I honestly can't remember the event or any probs afterwards....... second two went a couple of years later, local and a bit of NOS (not enought to put me under just enough that I didn't care what the Dentist was doing). Had a root removed late last year.... local only. The extractions were all painless...... but the next couple of days can be a bit miserable.

Good luck

While we're on the subject:
Anyone had root canal, and lived to tell the tale? I grew up under the impression that it was the single most painful dental experiance you could endure. I had visions of 6 orderlies holding down struggling patients while the maniacal dentist excavated the root!

Went to the dentist a few years back, had what I thought was a filling and it turned out to be root canal! It's actually rather nice, like having a deep itch scratched. I guess it depends on the accuracy of your local anaesthetic.

I hate dentists though. When I first got to NZ, on my entry level job I had to pay thousands in dental fees after I went once and they found I needed quite a few fillings. It annoyes the crap out of me, I have what I call good oral hygiene but I still get caries!
So I haven't been for quite a while, and I find it's a whole lot cheaper that way.

I had 3 wisdom teeth out at once about 25yrs ago, still have one left - but one was stuborn and the dentist said he couldn't give me anymore painkiller,I'd had the max,he wanted to know if he should give up or carry on....''go for it mate'' I said.He put his knee on my chest and hauled the sucker out, kinda put me over the pain threshold into another world.

Have a listen to that Alice Cooper track on Billion Dollar Babies - ''Aching to Get You'' I think to put you into the mood.

What?

My wisdom teeth story is pretty much like Crashe's. The soreness afterwards was nothing compared to the pain before.

Had a root canal done, too. No pain during or after, but BAD pain before...
