So Pollyanna was a chick who could find good stuff from any bad situation.
What good stuff has come from the ground-wobbles? For me ...
> My commute to work is now 40cm shorter. I will save a cup of gas a year!
> Our house is a few centimetre further above sea level providing more security from tsunamis
> Our daughter and kids are living with us ... no room for the mother-in-law to come visit
> Mother-in-law too scared to come visit anyway
> After weeks of feeling my way down the roads at 30 kph ... 50kph feels positively rocket speed.
Any one else have any pollyannas to offer?

Paying less interest on my mortgage until someone finally gets around to fixing my munted house.
Traffic jams as an excuse for being late to work.
Earthquake stuff is a universal excuse for taking time off work.
More traffic=more fun lane splitting down the main north road.
The drainage problems in front of our house have sorted themselves out.
Natural traffic calming measures slowing down the boy racers.
A great excuse to not give a shit about the garden any more.

SORRY ...
40 cm shorter as the crow flies maybe ... but the wave like ground shape, means more hills to climb ... ( more gas needed to get over them all )
YOUR house may be a little higher ... but the rest of the areas near you are lower ... so the tsunami's get to your place quicker ...
Room for a Caravan in what used to be the GARDEN ...
It's ok ... your mrs will talk her round ... thats what daughters do ...
In a year or so ... a few roads "may" be fixed ... :scooter:

My morning commute has reduced from about 11km to 14 paces - from bed to the spare room where I now work!
Nice new chemical toilet means not having to wait for an add break on TV before taking a dump!

Noticeable after September's quake that the Vintage Club swap meet had a lot more good stuff....brought to light by the requisite shed cleanups.
Looking forward to the next swapmeet - should be even more there now.
And high school zoning has suddenly become the least important reason to buy a house......

Prerequisites for house buying now include:
Not an old house (no double brick construction)
Not a new house (no concrete base)
Not on the hill
Not on the flat near the ocean
Not near any rivers or streams
Guess my house MIGHT be in demand one day after all!

Liquifaction isn't all bad. My stuff must have had nutrients in it as the grass under where it was is really lush and I only let it sit there for a day. Damn I wish I'd spread some on the garden instead of putting it on the road.

> I don't have to wash my bike because it'll be dirty again the next day anyway.

True! People we were socialising with on Saturday night live on Bealey Ave. They reckon it's much quieter now that the boys with the big fart canons out the back of their cars have to take it slower or have their cars drop body bits all over the road.

Yep. I reckon any house without structural damage will be extremely marketable.
And yeah, we're staying right were we are.
