Bike has no 17 digit VIN?

Hi all,

Just picked up an '88 Honda CD250U, didn't pay alot and it's like brand new.
However the problem i appear to have is i can't find it in the system.
It has an old style "VIN", not a 17 digit one. The guy i got it off said he got it off his cousin who let the reg' (licence) lapse. Didn't come with any old ownership or Reg' papers, WOF sheets or anything.

I want to get it back on the road but no history in NZ (that i can find) and having a VIN that Honda doesn't even aknowledge isn't going to make it easy.

Have alook on the steering head you should be able too fine the frame numder their on the right hand side..do you know what the old rego was??

if its been and Import and been complied you may find the vin plate under the seat

They just used frame numbers before inventing the VIN.

If it has been out of rego for many years you'll need to get it redone and they will probably add a new VIN plate to it after they take your $.

Just spoke to Honda NZ and they say they have no history of it ever being rego'ed in NZ.

It has the number on the neck, guy at Honda said it's called a "rykashicki" number or something like that. They used it before the 'VIN' system was invented.

The bike is an oceanic designated bike so was made for our market.
Guy at Honda also said with only 25,000 mile yes mile not km it may never had been on NZ roads from new.


Then rang NZTA and they also had no idea or history on the bike.

So maybe i have a new bike, al be it with 25,000 miles on it LOL.

You will need to go through the entire process of having the bike vinned from scratch. Before you start, get a report from the police that the bike is not stolen, etc.
The Vin check could cost in the vicinity of $400. For that, you get a number plate, a Vin plate, a Wof good for 6 months and reg.
You may also have to get a certification from an approved brake tester (at extra cost).

Once that is all done, you have a very nice little bike. 17" wheels, so no probs getting good tyres. Only hassle is you have to use inner tubes. The engine is shared with the 250 Rebel (CM250).

Or...

Get a similar bike with papers something close enough in looks etc. A wreck will do as long as it is in the system.

Transfer numbers over, take in for WOF to VTNZ and you are away.

Not that I have ever done this....
