Hope and pray for a brother or sister, people.

When will we stop crashing and killing ourselves!
Mate - we won't - riding a motorcycle is dangerous shit. Always has been - always will be.
Take the precautions, wear the gear and accept it could happen to any one of us. There are some odds.
Adds: hope the guy is OK and no one from here.

Here's a very rough diagram of what the bridge is like
Blue line in the river of course
Black line is the current road and bridge
Red line is where a bridge should be
You can see they were cheap bastards and made the bridge as short as possible by approaching the river at a sharper angle. Ideally it would be straight across. There's a heap of crosses on that bridge, they should never have built it

When I got diverted around this incident, could have sworn I saw SC standing by back of tow truck talking on cell phone! Plenty of :Police: but didn’t see an Ambo.
Hope there weren’t any serious injuries.

How serious was the crash? Did the bike go over the edge or just hit the barrier? Did any cars get caught up in the accident? There's a fair few cars going over and the 2 lanes are very thin

I came across the scene as they were putting Dave (Stonechucker) into the ambulance. So sorry Dave all the best and thinking of you and your family. And thoughts to VTwin who was riding with him and was obviously upset. Skunk arrived minutes after me.
It's very serious by the way so be careful what you all post here.

I don't know what to say.
Just got back from the station after giving a statement and a visit from victim support.
I didn't see the accident cause Dave was behind me and I was concentrating on traffic ahead but I herd this almighty BANG and looked in my mirror to see the R1 minus Dave wobbling down the road.
Stopped on the other side of the bridge and ran back to find Dave pretty banged up but still conscious and luckily there was an ambulance 1 minute behind us so I let the professionals do there job.
After I had finished at the police station I phoned Dave's mum to find out his condition.....mulitple fractures, collapsed lung, internal injuries and in a great deal of pain.....doctors will know more after x-rays.
I will try again later to see how his condition is.
The R1 is history.....he hit the barrier so hard that the crankcase burst and sprayed oil all over the road.
If I hadn't talked him into going up the Hill for a ride he'd be ok.
Thanks to those who stopped to help.

25th June 2005, 16:36
Bruce, please don't go blaming yourself for this.
You guys were both so good to me when I started riding; I know Stoney's learned heaps from you, as I did when I went riding with you. You are both patient, great people and I wish I was there to see you both.
Feeling so gutted and helpless stuck over here but thank God at least he IS conscious. Can someone let me know the details of the ward so I can ring or at least send something?
Having trouble believing this.
Does anyone know what bike he was on?
He was on his pride and joy R1. The bike's a wreck now, beyond repair. Hit the right hand side bridge railing, all right side of bike wrecked, tank opened up, engine casings and so on. Was puzzling that he hit the railing on the right when curving right you would expect a crash to send you into the left railing?VTwin had to go to the Police station to file a report so I doubt he will be able or up to posting anything here for awhile. Thanks Joni for the update on his condition. Great to hear he is conscious, I was really worried for him.

Don't even entertain those thoughts mate, just not worth beating yourself up over. We are all capable of making our own decisions, I know its natural to feel some responsibilty but please don't.
I was just talking to some friends about this. I was saying how great it is to be a part of this community, meeting people you might never have met, shooting the shit, having a laugh and learning from each other. The bad part is though when something like this happens, before to me this would have been an unknown rider having an accident. Thanks to this site it now is someone whose thought's I have read, comments I've laughed at and, well you get the idea. Got to take the bad with the good.

We all care about Dave but we don't want you to feel in anyway responsible for what has happened.

What he said. Shit happens, but you didn't cause the shit. It's just the roll of the dice. People can stay home and die falling down stairs. Don't go down that road of "If only I'd ...". Leads nowhere.
And hopefully the condition he's in sounds survivable. Bad but the sort of thing that once you've got to the hospital they can deal with.

Thanks for the update. You can't think like this tho, there's nothing you can predict, and there's nothing you can say that'll change what's happened. I know this, cos my bro went down on a corner while I was watching the rear mirror too, and we were saying the same thing. Don't beat yourself up about it. Shit happens, and this is shit. Got to agree LB. Unless you knew he was going to have an accident before inviting him for a ride there is no way you can try and blame yourself. Thoughts with you as well though VTwin, never easy being involved in something like this. Even harder when it's a mate.
Thanks for the extra info guys, sounds like the injuries are serious (and painful) but not life threatening (well no more than life is threatened and fragile at the best of times).
Keep the updates coming please for those of us not in Wellington.

First I heard of this was when Frosty called me to see if I was okay.
Luckily, I've been out at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary with the kids. Unluckily I had to wait until I got home to read this.
We drove by the accident site about 1.55 pm and I commented on the sand on the road, but didn't think it could have been a bike.
Strange about the right hand side of the bridge being hit. I can't work it out.
Normally people just go straight ahead and hit the other side. Although Dave won't remember a bloody thing about the accident I bet.
Extra prayers for you tonight buddy. KIa Kaha. Pity you'll miss the rugby (PT).
Warning to other bikers. They've put sand down over the oil slick. That bridge is gonna be dodgy as for the next day or two.

Strange about the right hand side of the bridge being hit. I can't work it out.
Sounds like maybe he's lost the back end on the slippery corner and then shot across to the other side and hit the bridge railing - then one can only say it was a miracle he never had a head-on with a car as that is usually a pretty busy road.
My thoughts are with you Dave - get well soon.
riffer
25th June 2005, 17:20
But the only time that corner is slippery is when there's black ice or fresh rain, or diesel.
It didn't rain here until 4.00, its at least 10° and there's no diesel that I can see on the road. I had a damn good look on the way home.
Coming the other way there's a decent bump that can throw you offline if you aren't expecting it, but not coming from the north.
Unless you're coming on to the corner way too hot.
But Dave should know this bridge like the back of his hand by now. He only lives 5 minutes away at the most...
Still scratching my head...

Saw Dave & Bruce returning from their ride over the hill as Viv & I were going to Martinborough. This has come as a bit of a shock as Dave is not a fast rider and does not take risks. We came back thru the accident scene, everything was cleaned up but still plenty of police doing their thing, did not think the road was slippery but it was bloody cold, would be interested to find out what happened.
Dave all the best & Bruce shit happens.

Dave went into theatre about 2hrs ago.
It has me scratching my head wot happened.
Road was clean
Plenty of grip
Wasn't dark or wet
Dave being the rider that he is rules out speed....plus you could see the traffic banking up cause there was a fucking tractor on the bridge doing 30-40 kms on a state highway.
Leading up to the bridge I could see all the traffic so I slowed down to 70-80km. As I entered the bridge I had to do some heavy braking because of the tractor ahead......That's when I heard the BANG.
Like I said you could see the traffic banking up and the road was good.

Hi VTwin, Sorry to hear mate and good luck to Dave coming through theatre.
I chatted you today at WMCC, which one was Dave? What jacket does he wear? Hope you are doing OK mate. It's always so tragic hearing such things and what makes it worst is when it's such a responsible rider involved.

Unfortunately people make mistakes and accidents happen - its a case of being human. It's also why ACC exists at all.
I think it would be more appropriate to put positive talk here rather than trying to suss the cause of the accident right now - I'm sure when he gets back online he doesn't want to read all your messages of WHAT WENT WRONG!!! especially if it just was a bad call, which we all know being motorcyclists ourselves can happen even with the most experience.
Our thoughts go to his friends and family right now in this very difficult time from Chic 'n' Charge and Stevo. :grouphug:

Really saddened to hear about this. Dave's a top guy and very safe rider.
Only way I can see something like this happening would be from mechanical failure or some momentary loss of attention due to tiredness. Plus that tractor on the bridge definately would have to be a contributing factor.
I've riden with Dave on a few occassions and he's always been very safe even to to point of looking out for me. On the way up to the Taupo Trackday he was pointing out crap on the road through the Para's. And when we rode home from the Rally at National Park I pulled over to zip up my wet weather gear and Dave immediately turned around and came back to see if I was ok.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on how he is Bruce you must be pretty shaken by whats happend.

Dave is currently in surgery. He's going to be in ICU for a few days at least so we won't be able to visit him just yet. His mum said he did make a cheeky comment this morning so that's good, but he's obviously very worried about his injuries long term. Please send him your best wishes. His parents need our support too, but his mum is pretty stoked at how many people out there care about Dave and are concerned about him. It might be an idea to keep phone calls to ICU to a minimum tho. If people are passing hospital tho, drop a card or note to reception to be sent up to him - I think the more the better to let him know that so many of us care. For those that can't - post your messages on KB and we can print them out and take to hospital.

Perhaps some of the 'get well' comments from the other thread could be added to this, or at least printed out also?
Really wish I was over there so I could go round and visit. I'm a bit concerned that Dave will get bored pretty quickly (between sponge baths!) so maybe we could send him some audio books or music on CD?

I suppose that from what I have read I'm like the rest of you and struggling to see the what / why of it all... I just sounds unbeliveable!
But that does not matter much really at this stage does it. What matters is Dave and his family getting through this and our thoughts are most certainly with you all.
At this stage I'm a bit limited in what I can do (and giving Dave the flu right now might not been seen as helpful eh?) but please count on our full support for what ever action is deemed appropriate.

Dunno what Daves injuries are, but if he can operate one I highly recommend that someone drops him in a playstation when he's up to it. Hospital is a very very boring place. Definitely drop him in some books and mags when the time is right, and if he can get it, Sky TV is a must have- but it costs.

I think one of his arms took a knock so a PS2 may be out of the question. Once the morphine is cut back a bit and he has some conscious time a bit of reading material never goes a miss.

I tell you what we can do in the mean time... Is get that F$%&() bridge sorted out
From What I read theres a few crosses on it ,,, I dont know the area ,,but looking at the drawing , and reading how carefull Dave was as a rider ,,, Somethings seriously amiss
I was thinking about this the other day there are 2000??? people on this list ,,,, I was reading about the poor guy who had his KTM nicked and found out the insurance company was an arse...
So if everyone sent a dollar thats a deposit in another bike
Anyway this bridge does need sortin
I dont know but thats me thoughts

... I'm a bit concerned that Dave will get bored pretty quickly (between sponge baths!) so maybe we could send him some audio books or music on CD?....
Dave was one of the people that wanted to see the KB Taupo track day vid I made. He never got to see it, and I've lost track of who has it.
I think one of our KB'ers in Auckland has it. If you have it, could you get it sent to someone in Welly, so they can set it up for him to watch while layed up!
Seeing Dave ride at Taupo track, it makes it hard to believe he's had this mishape! He is on the vid a lot, as he asked for some shots of him,, and after letting me sleep with him the night before (Long story, Now not the time to ask!), I owed him. His riding at the track on the R1 was VERY carefully. He was not the type to be worried about other people passing him, even if they were on a 250, ah Mikey!

Away from the PC for a few days. Sorry it took so long to send this SC. Prayers are with you man. My 16 year old said the same. Runs under the name Speights_bud. He has been chatting about the A100 with you and the bucket stuff. I know someone will pass this on to you when you are in recovery and you rock man. You made a difference to others and we appreciate it. Keep at it and heal well. :grouphug:

I didn't see the accident cause Dave was behind me and I was concentrating on traffic ahead but I herd this almighty BANG and looked in my mirror to see the R1 minus Dave wobbling down the road.....If I hadn't talked him into going up the Hill for a ride he'd be ok.
Friendships are born from common interest. Dave's a keen rider & poster to this forum, and many know of him only from his posts - we will be enriched again by his words I'm sure, once he has recovered.
We all know the risks with motorbikes, the bloody things fall over! Just read the stats on this forum's poll on hte subject, reads like 70% or more of us have done it. Just remember that the only ones who post are the ones that have survived upto that point. Thankfully Dave is a survivor this time, and may he be spared future trauma of this nature. May we all be spared it, but the odds are against us. I'm bloody thankful that my recent off didn't require my mates having to scrape me off the road or ring an ambo or attend my funeral. I still have my bikes and I'll keep riding, just more carefully. But now I've got a safer alternative (a high powered convertible, next best thing to a bike) and hopefully that will increase my chances of living to a ripe old age.
All the best Dave, best wishes and prayers of healing go out to you.http://www.voxanclubdefrance.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/new_color_.gif
