As per title, what do you do for training? Do you personally know how anyone at a national level trains?
Quite interested in bettering my riding.

cycling is probably the best training that most of the top riders do, gets the heart rate up, and most top riders do it
i know a few of the guys that tried lifting weights and it caused more issues with arm pump, lighter weights and higher reps sorted that out,
flexibility training is also up there with the guys up the top of the sport,

best best training is race the bike against the clock (and someone of competition to you) as much as possible.
unfortunately not many people have the time money or facilities to do that, so cycling works for fitness

Currently running 70KM a week, has helped a HUGE amount. Running works the whole body, shoulders/arms/back.. Everything.
Also doing lightweight + high reps/high intensity weights training
Looking at getting a rowing machine as well.

WOW that's quite a lot. What kind of level rider would you consider yourself?
I'll look further into the cycling. Cheers guys!

It's not that much really, when I had the RM and had easy access to a gym, I'd do:
Mon: 45mins on a treadmill
Tues: 45mins on a crosstrainer
Wed: 1hr weights, mainly upper body
Thurs: 45mins on a treadmill
Friday: 45mins on a crosstrainer
I wasn't training for anything, haven't competed ever and was just doing it for personal fitness, although it did have a massive affect on my riding.
Currently trying to get back into running on the road, after about 10 years of shin splint issues, so running for 45 minutes 4 times a week. Age and weight (may exercise hard but my diet sucks!) means I'm finding it pretty hard work...
Actually that brings up another issue, diet is just as important, if not more important than exercise, make sure they are both done in conjunction.

yeah mountain biking is the one for me. not only aerobic but good for balance and flexibility and if you can find some good technical downhills it works the same upper body muscles as the dirtbike. I sometimes get arm pump on my mtb!

My uncle a top downhill mountain biker gets more arm pump on his DH bike then going for a full nuts ride on the dirt bike. he tried taking his rm 250 down the Dh track and was faster on bike by 4seconds also

I find the same, but then you can't hold on to a MTB with your knees...

I did a training day with Chris Birch (Roof of Africa and Romaniacs winner) and the same question was asked of him...He said he spends as much time on his bike as possible..he also does alot of mountain biking, running and weight training..He also said a rowing machine was great too..
His weight training was intense though, he said his trainer worked him so hard each time he had trouble just lifting his arms afterwards! I went and purchased a full suspension mtb and it is great for some cross training..very similar to riding my motorbike on trail rides..with loading up suspension on burms and jumps etc.. and body positioning and moving your weight around on the pedals etc..
I'm pretty new to riding off road but Chris Birch certainly has the results to prove his training is paying off..cool guy too

The rowers are a good workout but they get boring using them for more than 30 min, I used mine for about 3 months now it sits there, all by its self while I go for a 10km run.

Cycling, 40 km a day , sounds good doesnt it , probably more like 18 one way .. , neve measured it ! )
but Cycling I rock around all over the place on me bike..
2 we have a really nice tasting beer call all free , no alcohol , nothing in it and taste no that bad , ( bearable )
Now I know this sound strange , but ,,,, you know the grinder on the yhauts , well i use my exercise bike to mimic that action ,
basically cycling for the upper body
And I am STILL nowhere near fit enough for these young fellas !!!!
Those top fellas are riding hard most days , and when they aint they are in the Gym , getting that heart rate up
Stephen
oh carb load the night before , no boose a few days before , and chocolate just before the race ( becareful with chocolate , what it gives it takes back in spades )
bananas all day !

There is being fit for riding then theres being fit for a national level rider....
You would need to be riding atleast twice a week pumping out a couple of 40min motos and on the other days it would be atleast a 20k run or a 80k cycle.
I dont think you could ever be fit enough to go flat out for a 30 min race if your working full time, seems the fitter you get the faster you go the more tired you get

I've been doing about 6 months at the gym now. I do 3 days of weights and 2 of cardio.
At the end of each day at some point I feel like having a spew. The cardio days are killers.
Program is
Weights.
Bench press super set with press ups. 75kg bench press then 10 press ups.
Leg press super set with step ups. 200kg leg press with 17.5kg weight in each hand doing step ups.
Shoulder press - 105kg
Seated row - 60kg
leg lifts - 3 sets of 20
Plank - 2 mins
sit ups - 3 sets of 20
Cardio
5km row
20 mins x trainer
20 mins bike.
I'm not just focused on bike training though, I'm trying to build strength and loose my fat tummy.

Think he's basically saying diet is the most important aspect to weightloss. I was told by a competition level kickboxer, who would regularly compete all over the world that successful weightloss is about 10% exercise, 20% mental attitude and 70% diet.
