Scooter motor licensing

so my flatemate went into VTNZ today to register his scooter. he didnt have his scooter when he went. He aked the woman at the desk to register his scooter. she gave him a form. he filled it out. it was a 50cc engine so he wrote that down. she needed no proof of this so she processed the forms and wamshebam he had a registered and licensed scooter, my question is what is to stop people from going in without their transport and registering it in the 50cc class when lets say it was a 100cc scooter?

....because when she runs the plate number that he has put on the form it tells her everything about the vehicle.

yup I used to own a few PGO scooters with my Mrs for weekend toys. The 50cc and the 105cc scoots are identical in appearance, so always wondered if I could wander in and reg the 105cc as a 50cc and thereby not worry about the WOF or increased registration costs (it is not a moped any longer over that cc rating). So while they are in essence identical the capacity difference meant I had WOF and higher rego. In order to have it changed you need to submit a form with details like the new engine number, and have this form endorsed by a qualified workshop who changed the engine over, or similar certifier qualifying the detail change.

Most people would if anything upgrade engine size, so I think you'd stand out like dogs bollocks on the system if that bike was registered as a higher class consistently then suddenly changed t othe cheaper class :)

The flip side is you could have insurance issues if you are classed wrong too.

Sorry i should have mentioned that it hadnt been registered before so it had no previous plate number. Thus this registration would be the only information on the scooter,

no, not honest at all really, I know a few 70cc scoots masquerading as 50s.

I always wrap myself up in cordura when I ride, leather would just look silly and then I'd get it from all sides, not riding a "proper" bike from the m/c riders, and not wearing a t-shirt for the scooterers. Just can't win ay? :lol:
