In s small moment of weakness and slight availability of extra cash, I went and bought one of this http://www.geelongcarboncraft.com.au/products/ZXR250-%28GREY-IMPORT%29-TANK-PROTECTOR%252d-ONE-SIZE.html. I know they don't have a photo of that one specifically but if you look around the site you will get the general idea.

now the problem being my bike already has a tank pad, one of those thick cushy ones, and it stuck on pretty well, it looks as if i just tried to rip it off it would leave bits and glue and crap all over it, or it feels firm enough it might remove paint, cant really tell.

I need some advice on what to do? should I be using a solvent? if so which one? or just hot air? just want to know the best waqy to remove it without wrecking the paint.

If you are worried about the paint still sticking to the pad when ripping it off, I suppose you could try try the dental floss method. Grasp a piece of floss in both hands. Hold the floss tight and carefully pull it down between the pad and the tank, working your way down so that the floss cuts the adhesive. If the glue is very stubborn, it may help to heat up the pad and the area around it with a heat gun. This method is often used when removing badges off car bodies. I am not sure if there will be room to do this while the tank is on the bike.

Mineral spirits will work for the residue, but I would be carefull not to leave it on the paint too long. Perhaps someone would know better than me, though.

Prepsol or it's equivalent will get the glue residue off.
A citrus based product called D solv It works good, too
