We were heading out to daughter's place this afternoon and I'd taken the MX5, picking my wife up from work on the way. Now everyone knows an MX5 is a sports car, right? And sports cars should all be manual's right? And they should have a sporty exhaust note, right?

So what's a guy to do when making his way through town in a manual sports car with a sporty exhaust note..?

I was practicing my heel and toe down-changes, wasn't I? As we came down to a round-a-bout I blipped into second gear. My wife said, "What are you revving the motor for?" I said, I'm down-changing and matching revs to road-speed for the lower gear, of course!"

Well I got a lecture about how with each blip of the throttle she could imagine the fuel going squirting away for no good reason... :bye: My protestations that this was a sports car and sounded great fell on deaf ears...

So I did what any sensible married man would do in the circumstances and drove a bit more conservatively to our daughter's place...

Of course I didn't tell her that I'd taken the MX5 up to Waiwera for my physio session and coming back, I passed a tow-truck up the passing lane and held full throttle in 2nd to 7,000rpm just to feel the rush of acceleration... (As I do each time I take the MX5 over the hill...)

Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it.... It was a long held dream of hers to one day own one and when we got the opportunity to pick this one up for a steal... well, it didn't take a lot of arm-twisting. I've never enjoyed myself so much on four wheels! I'd only take a Honda S2000 over the MX5, if I ever get the opportunity.

Yep, typical female.

I tell Mrs Max that the car turns into a 'Dual Handbrake' custom model when she gets in it.

Only got myself to blame I suppose. I mean, hopping out of bed on the wedding night and wiping the old fella on the curtains of the Kensington Hilton is not really the done thing......especially when the curtains were open and we were on the first floor level with the top deck of the buses going by on Holland Park Avenue....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't say such heresay!!!!

Sorry bro, an MX5 is a small car with a bit of a sporty appearance but hardly a true sports car mate!

To compare, an Aston Martin DB9 or Porsche 911 or similar are true sports cars. Appearance, engine, suspension, transmission and all the rest need to be true sports refined parts to make the whole vehicle a genuine sports car.

If comparing an MX5 to motorcycle categories it would be a "street car". The DB9 would be a superbike.

Not that I am Mr Picky....

That aside, good to hear you are out and about. I will bring the bike around on my days off if you are free. Catch up for coffee somewhere. Bring the street car :innocent:

Were the Triumph TR2/3/3A not sports cars? The MG Midget, Austin-Healy sprite, many small engined Marcos and TVR beasts? The MGB-GT has less power and none of the chassis finesse, yet it's one of the most successful sports cars in the world.
The MX-5 is a sports car, it's like a modern Lotus Elan, just because it lacks in badge credentials just like the S2000 and NSX, and most Jap cars.... it's a finely balanced and very fun car, in tribute to the Brits they forgot to put some power in them

No, you're wrong. MX5 is a sports car, just like the 60's Lotus Elan it was designed specifically to look like. Two seats, a bit better than standard go, a lot better than standard handling and pretty to look at...you're confusing "sportscar" with "supercar".

Definitely must catch up, I'm very flexible timewise. BUt I do also feel the MX5 is traditional psorts car and the ones you mention a desriable but out-of-reach supercars. We paid just over $5K for ours and it's valued at $7k.

Two of my favourites! "Power is nothing without control" as they say, and I do agree that 130hp isn't a huge amount, but the car is so well balanced with beautiful steering and flat handling it would take a very well driven powerful car to beat it in the twisties, even my mates 500hp AMG Merc. ALthough give a straight anywhere and I'd not see his exhaust...

Hey .. you have my sympathy .. my wife freaks out if I put my foot down in a Nissan Terrano (2.7diesel) for gawd's sake.

But that's just they way woman are ...

Remember .. can't live without them - not allowed to shoot them ..

Never give up on hope that you will ride again mate.

There will always be that little voice of hope in the back of my mind. My real problem is that my wife and family are so afraid of anything happening, (esp. Jill as I've been in a wheelchair once already), that they don't want me to take the risk.

Don't get me wrong an MGBGTV8 is a desirable classic either roadster, (rare), or fastback, and even the standard MGB has, over the years, gained an acceptance it never had when it was introduced. It was accused of a lack of build quality, poor performance and of being a cuter sedan with little to recommend it. Ultimately the infamous British build quality and cheap cost-cutting spoiled them making a true sports car worthy of the title. Sheer age has meant it is now considered a classic.

Personally I prefer the Sprite/Midget...

I think it may have just been that time of the month... Other times even in the Pulsar I've given it a squirt, playing in the twisties, overtaking slower traffic and she's been smiling. And as I said, she's actually the leadfoot most times, telling me to go faster, esp. on the bike!

How do you get anywhere in a Terrano without putting your foot down? Even with the turbo they're not exactly a performance vehicle... We had a Nissan Carvan TD27 and it was great once wound up but still a bit behind the Hi-Ace for power.

Each to their own, I myself think he B-GT has a beautiful shape and is timeless, just like the 65 ish Alfa Junior/1600/1750 etc coupe, amazing cars and of course the E-type.... unrill S3 went and made it ugly.

A slightly modernised Sprint is still a desirable, practical and quick road-car, as is the 2500S. I loved our old 1100 Mk1, it was great to drive, comfortable, cruised easily at 60mph and had the best headlights I'd ever experienced!

If I want speed I have the bikes .. the Terrano's a workhorse .. we had a Nissan diesel ute as well, 2.3 diesel no turbo .. the best thing about it was that it stopped me getting speeding tickets .. a 6k straight down hill and it might get to 100ks ..

They're a great workhorse too, but yes, the old 2.3 non-turbo required a lot of patience! I had a Mazda 2.2 diesel van, the bigger bodied lwb one and while it was very comfortable to drive and could wind up to over 140, it took a long time to get there and died badly on the hills.

I'm a fan of the 2500S too, but, I must pay I preferred my '73 P6B V8  I really miss that car, was a nicer cruise than my '73 E12 BMW 5 series, although the BMW was a very fun wee thing to drive.
The 1100 are even surprisingly roomy!
