I live away from my parents and this will be my first private purchase. Going to check out the bike tonight and if all looks well will drop it to be inspected tomorrow.

My main question is what paper work do I need for the bike..? Eg. Pink Slip etc etc and how do I make a change of ownership? Cheers for helping a newbie out

The seller should have a copy of the printed version of the paper that the NZTA sends out each time the registered owner is changed. You can use that to do it manually or do it on line as others have said.

All you need is your driver's licence to quote from when you do it on line plus a credit card to pay the small fee.

The seller should do his bit too and ideally do them at the same time.

Go to a post office or vtnz and get change of ownership papers, that way if you buy , you can fill it out and then get it changed over into your name at a post office, the seller will want you to do this before you take the bike.

You should always write some sort of "sale and purchase agreement" and both parties sign it and date it when the money and the item changes hands. It doesn't matter at all what it's written on. Just a sheet of photocopier paper will be good. Write it out by hand if necessary.

All it needs to say is that he agrees to sell you this item and you agree to purchase it, and whatever details you want to describe, such as a full description of the item including his representation of it, ie "good running condition."

This will be your record of actual ownership change. The NZTA record is for administrative purposes and does not show anything at all about your purchase of it.
