First ride in two weeks, so head off up Awhitu Rd.
Pretty cold but a few other bikes out anyway.
Cruise up as always, then turn around an come back down fast.
Dropping down into the gully just before Boundry Rd I'm clipping along at 120 getting ready for the easy left hander at the bottem.
Come out of the corner an wind it open going up the short straight before the crest where Boundry Rd crosses Awhitu Rd.
A horse truck is coming the other way with his indercator on to turn right into boundry.I slow a bit, cause that's just what I do,then I'm over the crest an I'm looking straight into the eyes of the Ford fairmount driver who's on my side of the road trying to pass the horse truck. :eek5: :eek5: :eek5:
I don't have time to think, just see the small gap between him and the gravel an go for it.
How I got through is still a bit of a mystery.
I stop 50 meters on an consider going after him,but what would be the point,he's a right wanker an we both know it.
So the point of this thread is,,,,,buggered if I know, but the Mrs is at work an I had to tell somebody.
Think I might win lotto next week but.
Cheers.

Bloody good riding Jackrat, It doesn't matter how good, or how experienced, you are, its often the idiot in the cage who'll cause the most grief every time.

Same thing almost happened to me today, except it was on highway 16 Tauhoa, and the wanker was on a bike.He passed a truck on a blind corner and popped a wheelie. It's times like this I wish I was driving a truck, and would have no compunction about creaming the pillock.

And the lesson here for all is looking for the escape route, not what you're going to hit. Because you will go where you're looking, if Jackrat had continued looking at the fuckwit in the Fairmont this would've had a different outcome.

Well done mate, things like this remind you that you're alive!!

Ditto that

And that.
Well done Jackrat- if you hadn't done everything right, this would be a very different thread.

Damn right.

Well done JR and hopefully the next time we are all a little impatient we might pause before we try a cunning passing stunt of our own!!! It's not just car drivers that do dumb shit.

Even car drivers do it to car drivers.

I was out in my car today (with a towel in front of my tum to protect it due to my op recently) when some pratt came out of a driveway and straight onto the road (turning right) without even looking and going at a reasonable speed as well.

Fark, I had to swerve to the other side of the road. Thank god there was nothing coming towards me. I stopped and abused the pratt... and all he did was look stupid.

The driveway that he came out of was that he turned right...
BUT there is no visabilty from his driveway to see what is on the right.
It is a driveway that you have to STOP and look.

Now if there was a car coming from the other direction to me, I would have plowed straight into this dude.... There was no way I could see him coming out of the driveway.

The road is that you go down into like a gully go down and around the bend and come back the hill. Its as you are coming up the hill part that on your left is the driveway... The driveway is on a 45 degree angle coming towards the road... like this sign > The top one is the driveway... the bottom part is the road that would continue on past the driveway entrance.

That incident really shook me up.

Positive replys,all good.
The thing that really bothers me is that I've ridden this road regularly for around twenty years an this is the third close call I've had in the last couple.
Once in my car an twice on my bikes.Every time it's been somebody on the wrong side of the road,an every time it's been up to me to avoid them.
A death up there resently was the same thing.
Awhitu Rd is a darn fine road for a bike, but after today I'll be avoiding it.
Todays effort gave me much more of a fright than I let on in my original post.
If you go out that way, please be very very carefull.
Cheers an stay safe.

I've had a couple of people, car drivers not bikers, tell me that they've had scares on that road. And I've seen them myself, nearly half a cars width over the line.

If I go uo the peninsula I keep WAY away from the centre line. Don't know why it is though , just seems to be a local habit.
Ones I saw, didn't even need to be over the line, ie not going too fast for the corner and drifting or anything, just basically driving down the centre of the road.

Maybe some folk haven't adapted yet to it not being gravel any more ?

Glad you got through OK.

Keep riding with skills like that, and you just might rise to the rank of jedi master.

This is the biggest killer on our roads. Everywhere you go you see wankers driving either on the centreline or over it. I guess it's too hard to demonise the "failing to keep lefters"

What pisses me off is that failing to keep left/crossing yellow 'no passing' lines/overtook without 100metres visibility etc all only incur a $150 ticket!!!

For the carnage that results when one of the above goes wrong the law isn't sending out a very strong message.

That's just STUPID!
I got $300 and 40 points for passing in a passing lane!
(Disclaimer: No-one was harmed in the making of this ticket)

It's amazing how narrow you can make your bike by sucking in your cheeks. (both pairs)
