In the future, I might consider moving to OZ. And I dont know if it would be better to take my bike with me, or sell it.

I really enjoy riding it, and it has been great. Awesome value for money.

Are bikes expensive in Oz? Would I save by taking it over?

Has anybody ever done this before? Does anybody recommend this? Comments?

Don't do it mate, it's not worth the hassle. Bikes aren't really much cheaper there anyway, and you'll have to have it complied and pay for freight and gst now I would think. I took my Z1RTC with me when I went, as it's not like you can just buy one of those anywhere...but it was a huge pain in the ass.

Good question! We are planning to go to Aussie, was wondering the same. I was guessing it would be too expensive and silly as I am sure I can get the same bike I have now over there.... its not like it is a rare and wonderful thing.

Far to expensive.

You're welcome. They (Govt.) don't want your bike. No sales tax.
Not worth the hassle.

Last time I checked new bikes were slightly more expensive. Strong $AU.

After doing the $ and working my way through the rules and reg's I came to the conclusion that it is worth it only of you really really want to keep your existing bike.

Buying a replacement is expensive cos of the Aussie dollar. You will have to pay GST and duty and freight and spend ages getting fuked about by the admin if you bring it over.

Use it as an excuse to upgrade :-)

I looked at the figures and decided against it - at least for my $6500 Yamaha TRX850.

Unless your bike is worth a shite load, or you're not likely to find one over here then I wouldn't bother. Freight, customs etc is just the start. You've got duty and gst to pay, then rego inspection and rego costs too.

Bikes over here are more expensive compared to NZ when you take the exchange rate into account, but second hand prices compared to new price they seem much more affordable once you're earning Aussie dollars.
The bike market here is different to NZ, you won't get a VTR1000 over here very cheap (my neighbour in NZ got one with 30k on the clock for $3.5K!), but many alternatives are well priced.

Have a look at the broaded market and find a bike that will suit the area you are in. Not all cities in Australia are blessed with access to good motorcycling roads like we get in most places in NZ.

Do they have to pay GST on a personal use bike on import? Here, you don't if you've owned it for a while.

EDIT: And there's Import Duty on bikes into AU?? That seems amiss.

And getting the bastard on the road is much more hassle than freighting it. Sending it there's a piece of piss (and not that expensive) - registering it is a nightmare.

That is what I was told. By the time I added it all up it was going to cost around $3k to get it here an on the road.

For me it's easier to buy a good condition used bike and bring my goodies over to fruit it up... or just buy a newer/better bike.

Only consider it if you CAN put a price on sentiment..

I'm taking mine with me.

Anyone who has done it, can they recommend a shipping company?

I sent my sister bike over to her a couple years back, Though it was a dirt bike so it was a bit easier, I just found the required paper work on the internet, emailed it to her, she filled it out and presented it to customs, took the bike home.
