I ended up having to do my leather gloves in the washer after ALL other efforts failed. Grans foot powder stops the smell for a while, but doesn't really clean them, so the smell will come back as bad as ever.

After washing my gloves I had to treat with wax a number of times to make them soft again.

mmm tried Talc, as i didnt have any Grans Remedy, but think a good wash is what I they need. Just wasnt sure about how the materials in the glove would like it - esp since the care instructions say 'DO NOT WASH', and 'specialist leather cleaning only' or something like that.

Also - dont want them to shrink!

Rinse thoroughly in warm water, then use any atheletes foot powder or similar with antibacterial properties. It's the bacteria that causes the smell. :puke:

Now this is a sure way to get it done,

Step1
Put them on and get on your bike
Step2
Go to your mums
Step3
Sit down and ask if she wants to talk about a few things... she'll quickly jump up and put the jug on for sure.
Step4
Slip the glove off and place under the couch
Step5
Talk some bullshit then go home.

Your mum will be over for in a few days with you nice smelling clean as gloves.

All for FREE. :Punk:

Yeah, you're not supposed to wash leather, but it doesn't mean they'll disintegrate if you do. There's no real way to get them clean and non-pongy except by doing what TheBikerFormerlyKnownAsBiffBaff said. Use something gentle like a wool wash or like that there, squeeze them out gently, hang up with the fingers upwards to let the remaining water drip out, then dry gently. The leather will go quite stiff, but can be 'rehabilitated' using some leather treatment. Alternatively, dry them by wearing them on your hands till they're dry and your hands are wrinkly and pruney...

I've got gloves that've been soaked through heaps of times, and you wouldn't know it. I also know some guys who wash their leathers in the washing machin, and I'v washed my (part leather) jacket several times myself.

*is glad to see this thread*

My gloves don't stink but they got wet in the rain/hail on Saturday and now that they've dried up they are slightly mis-shaped :(

*will remedy that tonight*

FYI, If you wear them without treating them after they are stiff they mould to your hand and become very comfortable :D

I guess it's like having leather shoes - they say that you can/should wear them through water as soon as you get them, then wear them till they're dry. How you avoid chillblains/frostbite during this is anyone's guess - but the alternatives are to stuff with newspaper - so that the boots hold their shape (we're talking fashion here dahling's, not function!).

Gran's Remedy is great though (I had a pair of shoes I'd worn for over a year - never with socks...I couldn't keep htem in the same room I slept in...Gran's REmedy took care of it within three days or so, and they're back under the pillow!).

Febreeze is also another option if they're not too pongy (but they sound as though they are). Whoever said it was correct in that it's the bacteria causing the smell, not the sweat (per se) so I used to wash my gi's (very sweaty, very icky) in HOT water to kill the little multipliers.

Good luck.

. Whoever said it ....

Me, me , me. Do I get a chocolate fish?

TheBikerFormerlyKnownAsBiffBaff

I'm thinking of becoming known simply by a symbol, as one does. Apparently this makes me all mysterious, 4 foot tall and full of shite. So I'm half way there already.

You can also get an aerosol spray at the chemist that is designed for sports shoes. (my Touch shoes develop a personality all of their own...) Its an anti-bac thing like the powder but the spray is good for blasting up into all the nooks and crannies
