View Full Version : Are you an organ donor?

over5tayer

i heard some unsettling news a few days ago and have been thinking about it since. Apparently, if you are an organ donor and you are in a serious accident; the priority switches from 'keeping you alive' to 'removing your organs while they are still fresh'.

is there any sense behind this or is it just scaremongering?

Scaremongering.

What possible motivation could the paramedics etc have to look at you as donor organs instead of a patient?

some people think its a blessing, but its a curse.

scaremongering. The best way to keep your organs in good condition to be reused is to keep you alive. The priorities will only change after you are dead. Add to this that your choice to be a donor can be overridden by the next of kin so they have to keep you going long enough to get that sorted as well. It would be a waste of time to let you die cause you are a donor only to find that the loved ones say no and by the time they talk them around the organs are no good. They don't think reuse until after you have no further use.

Nothing pleases me more than using my organ for the benefit of other people. If I can do it, even after I am dead I will be in heaven! :woohoo:

I heard the doctors, after they've kept you alive... will sew you into a human centipede..at the back! and they target bikers.

My older brother did the same. I was only a wee fella when he came home from working at Auckland Hospital after witnessing one of them. Apparently he had nightmares for a good few weeks.
I'm a donor though, What will I care? I'm fcking dead! Good luck to them to find something they can use though :innocent: maybe they could do a hair transplant from my incredibly hairy back?

I heard some G.P.s will give you plasters filled with anesthetic, so when you put one on a boo-boo they can break out the bone-saw and get harvesting. :innocent:

I'm an organ donor. But so far nobody has taken anything...although herself likes to...errmmmm..."borrow" the...ummmm...IYKWIM.

Not sure if anything's gonna be in good enough repair to be useful to anyone anyway. Certainly not my liver - it's fucked. Kidney's might still be OK. Heart has a dicky valve. Eyes have had retinal detachment and still have glaucoma. Lungs have partially collapsed once...jeez it's a wonder I stay alive...

Uhh... please tell me you're kidding? Ethical bodies, fellow doctors, and the government would have a screaming shit at them if anyone tried that kind of shit! Absolutely got to be scaremongering.

Also, LOL.

One of you fuckers better donate me a liver in about 10 years time.

That's my strategy anyway. Hopefully they can transplant brain cells by then too.

My brother, who is a doctor, advised me not to be an organ doner, as it can be the deciding factor in switching the "machine" off.

Wonder if it matters whether the doctors an asian or european doc? In some countries, your worth more dead than alive. Especially if the "cuzzie" is in the spare body parts trade.

My brother, who is an undertaker, often tells me stories about the bits and pieces the doctors stuff body cavities with after they have ripped out the innards so that the rellies don't know.

He found a possum once.

Still breathing.

How do you quit as a donor?

Berries
12th April 2011, 07:30
Live longer.

Considering how few people get to donate due to family intervention is should be an opt out system not opt in.

If they are even considering switching off the machine that goes bing, then you sound like you are going to be pretty messed up if you make it through. Flick the switch, save electricity, spare bed at the hospital and you get to give someone new eyeballs. Everyone's a winner.

No, I'm not a donor as i don't know if i would approve of the recipient.

Some fucker that drunk himself into oblivion and wants a new kidney, the smoker that needs new lungs, the one that just ran you over and needs your eyes.

And besides they won't take them just like why i can't give blood, was in the UK in the 90's so they are still worried about mad cows.

I thought they would have got over Thatcher by know.

If you are referring to the option on the licence just opt out at the next renewal. Opting in is also conditional on next of kin agreement so tell them to say no, seems a bit unfair to say you will on the licence and then have the next of kin say no when the time comes but it is an option and a reality in a lot of cases.

Snippet snippet, bad people doing bad things

Aren't these people at the bottom of the list for donors?
Smokers and alcoholics certainly don't deserve one more than the healthy (habitual) patients, I sure do hope I'm right.

Unfortunately I don't think so. the second time they need something they are put at the bottom of the list, but the first time it goes on need.

organ donors should have top priority of other organs if they become in need.... otherwise its like winning the lottery without even buying a ticket.

Know an old guy in his 80's now,we talked about organ donating,he said he had recieved a new hip, knee over the years,he commented he was after a brain transplant, preferably from a maori or politician as it would be as new, hardly used, except the maori might want the brain back later.

Golden thread, starter for 10! I am out of bling sadly.

Dont listen to these ill informed cretins.

How some of us are even alive surprises me?

Aliens come and remove bits of you while you sleep

I guess the fact they can only harvest during leap years, and then only in blue moon months, saves the majority :sunny:

Anyone got a spare working pancreas? I could do with one that I can share out to my family

im a donor, wasnt even a question when i filled out the license paper work. if ive got anything useful then they are more than welcome to it. figure if im bad enough that the machine is going to be switched off, then im not going to miss a few parts.

dads been a blood donor for over 26 years, whereas im too chicken [hate needles!] so organs was the best i could do.
