View Full Version : 6 Hundy gearing for Manfeild?

Hey folks, just wondering if any modern 600 riders could advise what gearing they run at Manners?
About to pick up dare i say it a "Gixser" thats rather stock and thought the cheapest 1st mod would be to maybe chuck a smaller front cog on, I think they have a 16t standard so perhaps dropping to a 15t would perk it up a tad.
Never ever ridden a 600 before so is all very new to this "young" fella :innocent:

Obviously depends on how fast you're going mate,as someone doing minute eights etc will more than likely be needing different gearing to someone doing min 12's.
But std bikes are well over geared...so at least 1 off the front and maybe 2-3 xtra on the rear may be a good start. If you get to full song in top down the front straight...you've got it right!

Just wear the best gear you can newbie, or at least some decent Qmoto

Then wouldn't you have been better off gearing it down so the thing pulled harder in each gear and you used top?

Not really...its all about when you need the power and ease of changing at the right points in the track. I'm on a Kawasaki with Dunnies (200 profiles) and I ran a 15t/43t from memory. Never got to top gear either. PS..if you need any quality used rubber...I'm yer man ;-)

Whilst I hear ya regarding certain gears/revs for certain corners and parts of the track...I also don't see the point in not using top. It's not a street circuit. And any bike geared down pulls harder out of the corners than one that's not. And we all know drive out of corners = speed down the straight! I realize you'd not want to gear a superbike so low, as it'd want to turn its self inside out...but a 6 hundy?

Many a man has been thrown exiting the hairpin at Minefield due to the dreaded high side...600's can bite just like their big brothers!
Anyway, less shifts at manfield I found to be better, much like the sand dweller seemed to found it too.

I know all about high sides mate. I've owned and raced an RS250 Honda. And I'm not saying you're wrong...I'm merely surprised is all. The sort of laps times the fastest geezers are doing round there now scare me just hearing about it.

Another thing I forgot to mention was the change the 200 profile tires make to the bike....the very tall profiles make it so as you roll off your knee out of higgens and begin standing the bike up, the revs seem to remain more static as the tire accommodates the gain in speed. If you had it geared too low, when you were in a lean the bike would be revving its nutts trying to keep up, and if you geared it up to counter it, you lose drive onto the straight. The 15/43 was a good all round compromise

My bike is a good example of how gearing can be weird.
At Hampton Downs I use 14f 47r
At Taupo I use 14f 45r
It's arse about face cos Taupo is a slow track. But, if I was to use the 47r I do slower lap times, even though I'm getting better drive. Problem is I'm entering 2 corners in particular a hell of a lot slower than using the 45r (engine braking being the culprit). So at Taupo I sacrifice 6th for far quicker corner speed at those 2 corners without losing much in the way of drive. End result is much better lap times because the gearing isn't as critical for the rest of the track.
Hampton Downs I can use all of 6th gear using the 47r and there aren't any corners where I end up in between gears (like those 2 corners at Taupo)

I hear ya! Gearing is always a compromise to a certain extent eh.

No I found 5 speed was better ie: faster lap time I like using 1st at the hairpin and running 6 speed that didnt work and was never happy with the gearing for the infeild either as a 6 speed.
I won the Nationals that same season so I guess it wasnt't 2 bad as a 5 speed.
If you gear it right it will go just as fast in 5th as it will in 6th

Cheers guys,
Its an 08 if that matters (all Suzuki's look the same to me haha), will grab a 15t front and see how she goes. Prob be running 180's to start, whatever is cheap................no intentions of breaking any records.
Looking forward to re learning how to ride, am guessing point n squirt wont work to well like it did on my litre bikes. 1:20's here I come :woohoo:
