I'm appalled that living in a country like NZ a governing body can decide what different media platforms may release for sale in the country. Sure stick an R18 label on it, or even R21 if you feel so inclined. But to say the material is too questionable for any person in the population and that even the adults don't get a choice in the matter is fucked up. Bloody bureaucrats sitting around on their arses, "oh no, no one in the country needs to view such heinous material we'll create criminals". What a bunch of hootnanny, if you're an adult you should be able to view/play whatever takes your fancy that has been created.
I thought we lived in a free country. WTF!
If you'll excuse me I'll be off to play a banned game Manhunt. Mmmm plastic bag around his head and hold.... hold.... hold....

Where did you get that idea? Free country? allowed to watch what you like? No F'king way! Believe it or not it is freer than it used to be but last night's piracy bill was a step in the wrong direction.

I could not give a shit that modern musicians lose money, they are untalented dickheads who create music with the aim of making money not for creating something of artistic brilliance.
If someone truly creates something good, music/movie etc then people who are truly passionate about said artistic creation will buy it, pay to watch it. If a new album comes out from someone who's really good (happens very rarely... quite often I'm trawling through 70s/80s sections) I'll pay for it. Why do I want a shitty computerised compressed version of a good song when I can hear it in a pure audio format from a CD. However most people can't seem to tell the difference, and listen to music purely because it's marketed to them. Just like shitty blockbuster pop-outs with the aim of revenue.

I agree with you in the main, but of course there is some stuff out there, that I would imagine most of society would agree should be stamped out. I know it's an extreme example, but I'm sure most paedophiles would also love to access whatever took their fancy. And of course, there are other examples as well.

So you'd be ploughing pixelated horses into pixelated children? LOL. Quite frankly I don't see the market for such a game. But if people wish to pay for something such as that, why the hell not? Does it brood paedophiles/beastiality? No.

Talking about fake creations, not filmed rape, or illegal real content. Fake movie/game creations.

How do you know that?
Sure you may get people who already commit acts of paedophilia/beastiality who buy the game, but they are already that type of person. The game wouldn't turn them into that person now would it?! That's just a ridiculous statement.
If you put an R18 rating on that I highly doubt an 18+ year old is all of a sudden going to think that beastiality or child rape is ok because of a game. Do you think that if you played a game like that you would all of a sudden become a paedophile? That is just insulting to the intellect of adults.
Why isn't then games such as GTA banned?! It's ok to kill hookers with double ended dildos for their money virtually? People over 18 can handle that but not putting plastic bags over peoples heads... that's fucked up. Double ended standard more like.

Double standards much?
How does something fake compare to something real in anyway?!
You think that if I think it's ok for people to play hentai rape games that I think it would be ok for people to watch real rape?! WTF. Surely you jest? That surely can't be a serious statement.
For one government bodies don't decide whether watching real rape, or real child pornography is ok or not to let it in the country. It is just against the law, no matter what. The only reason anyone can look at it legally is through a court system when it is used as evidence. Fake role playing creations no matter how vulgar/offensive they may be, are creations. And it is stupid to ban them from a country as though adults can't differentiate fake from real.

On the other hand, if you've got someone with that sort of ... tendancy... playing that sort of game would encourage those fantasy's, and then they'd be drawn into making it a reality.
It's the way some people go from peeping tom's to stalkers to serial rapists. It's not saying every peeping tom turns into a serial rapists, but some do.
Having said all that shite, I don't like complete censorship as a rule, I love GTA et, I just think there's gotta be a limit somewhere, and that somewhere should be anything involving kids inappropriatly.

The technicality is, any "tribunal" is a NOT a court of law, and you can decline consent for them to make any ruling about you.
What is more concerning, is they may bully ISPs into following along with their rules and they might cut off your service. They do not need your consent for this, although you might be able to swing breach of contract proceedings against your ISP if they terminate your service for some reason that is not in your contract with them.
In the end, one ISP will stand up to them and they will get all the business, and then the others will capitulate.
There are also plenty of workarounds, and serious downloaders will have already be implementing these for some time.

What, so better 99.9% of the normal population have their lives regulated, just to protect the 0.1% of crazies out there that will just get set off by a different trigger? Pffft.

Surely the point of a simulation is to simulate reality as best it can?
But in the end it is only a simulation. You know that while you are playing it.
Someone could just as easily be tipped over the edge when their mother tells them to go clean up their room. Psychotic behaviour is psychotic behaviour and you don't regulate society to keep them in the closet. If someone is suceptible to that kind of behaviour you try and find them before they do something. Not control their entire environment so they can live a normal life while thinking sick sadistic thoughts and possibly being randomnly tipped over the edge by any kind of stimuli.
People could get tipped over the edge watching shows like Dexter just as easily, it's all relative. And a stupid thing to regulate. The government doesn't need to Nanny adults!

Pffft.Yeah, I know, but that 0.1% will typically rape a portion of the 99.9%... hmm, if we could get them to keep it within themselves....
But in the end it is only a simulation. You know that while you are playing it.Yup, totally, and I actually agree with your point of view. Remember though, you're thinking about it as an intelligent rational person. Unfortunately there's a sector of society that is neither... and given that we have this pathetic view "everyone is equal", we thus make laws based on the lowest common denominator.

So no Rockstar Games Bully?! Not that it's that great a game... but to be honest I don't really turn my stomach playing a game where a kid assaults another kid by giving them swirlies, etc.
I think the limit is easily drawn from society itself through what it will pay for, if something disgusts you, you're not going to buy it. If there's no market to create something that disgusting then why bother creating it. It doesn't need a guiding hand to say what's appropriate or not.

Ooo... shall we start the "rational person" license. Then only people who live up to this governing standard are allowed access to such material. Oh no... creating more bureaucrats! Meh, guess I can still buy the banned shit off ebay if it's good enough to be worth buying. IE Manhunt!

One word for you "de-sensitization".
Watching that shit numbs your empathy toward others pain and suffering, my own generation has done more than enough to fuck society with its dogged pursuit of "freedom of choice for the individual", if you are truely representative of the following generation then we are well and truely fucked.
Maybe you should ask yourself why you find such material entertaining and whether it offers a positive influence in your life or a negative influence. If you claim its neither and that it's nuetral, then you are either a fool or outright lying to yourself.

+1.
I suspect a lot of the anti-censorship people don't know how bad it can get. I used to be anti-censorship and still am anti the foolish censorship but I know we need censorship for the extreme stuff. I don't want snaff movies! If you think Saw is near the bottom of the barrel you would be wrong, it is but the tip of the ice-berg. Sure get rid of the pixelated bums etc (we all have bums and knwo what they look like so don't make them dirty (pun not intended)) but don't get rid of censorship, refine it, use the 85 percentile rule or something like that.

Surely the values of a culture are passed on through the generations by the stories that are told and the games that are played. Life is a wee bit short, or would be, for each of us to learn everything by direct experience. Censorship always seems a bit of an imposition of others opinions but we seem to have moved to market viability being the only criteria irrespective of who gets exploited.
Guess I would be inclined to ban all politicians from all public media.

Late reply but...
How does watching fake occurences desensitize you? Sure when you're young and influenced easily... but once you're over 18/21 surely that point of empathy has reached a constant. I could shoot people for days and days on end (in a game) but would that make me even want to consider doing such a thing in real life? Of course not, I'm sickened to even go hunting for rabbits, it's just not my thing at all.
Fake violence is entertaining. To entertain you require conflict and resolution (usually). Violence is one form of conflict very common in humanity. Just like drama, usually they go together quite well. To pretend as though it isn't is just being blind.
