My Son-in-Law has a hyperactive mind and can't concentrate on only one thing at a time... He runs three businesses... Simultaneously, of course...

Yep... 3 screens at work and home...

Working on a PC with only one screen feels a little cramped...

I can only cope with one at a time... :bye: Rudy is genuinely hypo in the brain dept. His body has real trouble keeping up. He came into NZ from Germany and in order to get a work permit had to do something on the skill shortage list. Being a computer/marketing/website design-build-SEO geek working as a consultant to major European companies he had to choose something else. When he was 17 he passed the German plumbing/gasfitting quals so chose that. Although he hadn't done plumbing since, and to get his NZ certs he had to cram four years study into eight months, he passed! He's got the kind of brain that picks up not only principles, but remembers regulations chapter and verse at first read. Plus he works very hard, usually getting to bed around 1am or later, (earlier?).

I get exhausted just talking to him! Listening to him interact with clients and customers I am amazed at his depth of knowledge and his ability to think outside the square and resolve what seems at times impossible issues! Doesn't matter whether it's plumbing, gasfitting, drainage or solar, (He runs his own business, Euro Plumbing), or the intricate details of website design, build and SEM/SEO from the simplest of landing pages to scratch-building a large shop such as jamesblond.co.nz (His web biz is yhp.co.nz), he can seamlessly switch from one to the other on the next phone call!

LOL! He can't sit still long enough! He's constantly shifting and moving. He does need to watch his diet though, he can't burn the calories off like he used to now he's in his 30's, and not on the tools anymore...

Which region of Auckland does his plumbing/gasfitting business cover?

He's based in Panmure and covers the greater Auckland area with clients as far away as Warkworth. He's got a business partner now and that's both meant an increase in staff, Paul is a certifying gasfitter, and more time for him to be the boss rather than the worker and better able to deal with clients. 550-6202 or free-phone 0508-446 892

We all get heavier as we get older because there's a lot more information in our heads. So I'm not fat, I'm just really intelligent and my head couldn't hold anymore so it started filling up the rest of me.

Hope you are using a multi-factor authenticated VPN from Starbucks :innocent:

Give the guy a break. He doesn't spend hours sitting like that, not even minutes. He's aware of the need to keep the weight off and mentioned to me the other day that he's doing something about it.

You need to eat or drink something with sugar in it, sweeten you up a bit... :innocent: Or are you just having an off moment..?

But, ya know, whatever

If you want to do him a genuine favour, buy him some monitor arms that raise the monitors up a bit, and a decent seat, that'll ween him off that position nicely. Of course it's entirely possible that he doesn't spend hours writing code, concentrating solely on that and fuck all else, but he'd be a pretty unique dev if that were the case...

Rudy's unique alright. He farms out the donkey work these days, he's got some very talented people working for him. His role now, mainly, is telling them what he wants and how he wants it and putting it all together. He liases with the client, assessing what the client wants, the budget available and what he wants to achieve, then advising exactly how to get the result the client is after. He tells the client how long it will take each stage of the project to reach target and monitors the site daily, providing a monthly, (or weekly, depending what the client wants), report on how it's going and what tweaks he's made to it.

His real expertise is in setting up the basic skeleton for future growth and in SEM/SEO. His results are genuine and solid and he avoids risking the backlash from the likes of Google which has seen other designer's clients blacklisted. His own sites, Euro Plumbing and Plumbers NZ along with James Blond, are good indicators of what he can achieve. jamesblond.co.nz was a complex site scratch-built with a complicated booking system required. The owner is very clued up though which helped a lot as he knew what Rudy was talking about and was able to provide good content and understand the process. He's so happy with the results, he is now getting Rudy to build an Australian website and is revamping the NZ one as the business grows.

The recently relaunched Plumbers NZ site is the result of two years work and once operating fully will be the biggest site in NZ. He's already got interest from major players in the industry, both for the plumbing, gasfitting, solar and drainage industry and the likes of Yellow Pages, Finda, (Seek too I think) and larger IT companies. He has several hosting packages on his own servers as well. He's already turned down offers for the site.

It looks like he's finally going to be able to redo my site which has only been a hastily chucked together landing page by me, but he's going to build me a shop. I'll be doing most of the content writing for it and it'll be about 5 or 6 pages, I think.

jamesblond.co.nz was a complex site scratch-built with a complicated booking system required. You've mentioned that before... I fail to see what's complicated about it? Pretty basic stuff... go and have a look at the guts of an international airline booking system or a track n trace courier system; that is getting complicated.

I'm not an expert of course, but I'd say same thing only more and bigger. But then most of what Rudy talks about is way over my head. I just listen in complete ignorance when I'm there and he's discussing a job with one of his chief programmers... May as well be talking in German or Mandarin to me, and I know a wee bit about IT terminology...

go and have a look at the guts of an international airline booking system

I did that for 7 years, but the ops side, so crew rostering, route planning, aircraft scheduling, daily ops (aircraft & crew) rules compliance (FAA etc), flight logs. Few million lines of code. development team leader/principle software engineer. Fun times.....

Sorry, are you saying that JamesBlond site is the same than an airline reservation system only smaller? Sabre & Open Skies (http://www.navitaire.com/res_and_dist/openskies.asp) (reservation systems) are written by large multinational corporations. Navitaire who make Open Skies is a 600 employee company, which itself is only a business unit of Accenture, a 45,000 employee company. I know this because Navitaire bought our ops systems (http://www.navitaire.com/op_and_rec/geneva.asp) for several million dollars a few years ago.

I think I'm more likely showing my lack of knowledge... :innocent: Rudy would know exactly what you're talking about, of course. James Blond was a site that required a scratch build instead of using a template and I was involved in the meetings with John and was impressed by the complexity and detail required to incoroprate everything John wanted in a form that would be easy to manage by him and operate by the public.
