I have just got back from my first ever ride on a road bike. Rode like I would my dirt bike. fanged it out in first popped a wheelie that gave me the shivers hit the redline and found 2nd I was already doing 120kph. I can see why bikers like to go so fast now. I want a yamaha R1 just like my friends now.

Yamaha R1 2007 mode./ I was in shorts shirt and my work boots and my mx helmet lol. Has pretty much made me want a roadbike just a shame you have to start on a 250 but he reckons I could get an ok one for 3-4g. Is it true you are only allowed to go 70kph before you get full?

Yeah, but if you do 140 you can half the length of time you have to spend on a learners.

Did you sit down or stand on the pegs the whole ride ?

Nobody i know followed that rule and very few people get pulled up for it. 3-4 grand will get you a decent 250.

The biggest difference is that tarmac bites quicker and harder than dirt! Otherwise :woohoo:

PS - second difference it's harder to lose licence on the dirt.

Any bike will powerstand if you put a big enough sprocket on it
<img src="http://www.dansmc.com/big_sprocket.jpg" />
though on a ginny the gearing may end up giving you valve bounce at 50kmhr, still sounds like this fulla may be better suited for some slow riding :innocent:

His description of is riding we have seen so we know from his own words what he rides like, well at least on his first go on the road. What he looks like is irrelevant.

So he climbed on an R1 and made the very common mistake of giving it a handfull. From this you deduce he's an idiot and we should burn him as ah heretic?

Nice.

Red line on an 07 R1 is a wee bit higher than 120.....:innocent: You'd have to drop 3 teeth on the front and have a top speed of 240 ish...

So, you got on an R1 and gave it a handful? Good times.

just to stir the pot...

250 2mx bike will wheelie pretty violently, haven't ridden a IL4 thou to compare but my KX can lift the wheel off the throttle in all but top and is just plain vicious in 1st (way more than my mille).

New to the road doesn't mean new to bikes - his dirtbike experience probably puts him in good stead to control a sportsbike.

But the throttle wont be getting twisted like i did the first time on a road bike. Got to respect road bikes, their power and the road. Its a total different cup of tea but I think I will enjoy it.

just got back from Taupo had a good ride but damn my face got cold with my mx helmet. Its amazing how easy it is just to pull out and pass cars. Nearly had an off going down the summit hit some loose gravel but managed to correct it. An hour 10 there and a an Hour 5 on the way back from the Bay view petrol station was pretty good for my first decent ride.

Stop picking on him. Lots of us started on dirt bikes. Probably the best introduction to riding you can get. I did and yes, it was mind blowing moving up to more powerful road bikes. He's excited learning more about the joys of riding - hardly a crime.

Just take it easy D3ALN and don't kill yourself OK.

TSS Red Baron have one here in Wellington, and it's got the smoothest motor I've seen in one of those bikes. It actually pulls through the rev range nicely, where a lot of them have a real dead feel in a few places on the tacho.
