This weekend I got the chance to travel down to Wanga's to see my dear old nana with my sister and mum. They own a motor home (Toyota Coaster) and it was my first trip in it. My eyes were opened to a completely different point of view of big motor homes and their presence on the road.
My sister is the sole driver of it (although I got a short spell behind the wheel along the Desert Rd) and is a very considerate driver. She pulled to the left at all opportunities to allow cars past and not a single one acknowledged her. Given that these vehicles are known to not be speedy, especially uphill, I was surprised that her efforts to allow several cars past at every opportunity were seemingly taken for granted. I was also surprised at how many cars hung back then raced past at the last minute when Lisa was almost completely out of room on the verge. (Not to mention all those that squeezed in at the very last moment as she had to pull back out into the lane for our own safety).
Off track slightly, I was surprised at how few bikes I saw out and about other than around the Wanganui area (heaps there!!) Plenty of coppers out as well as cameras. Take care out there people and ride to survive the Easter weekend.

The biggest fuckwits on the road are everyone else when I'm towing my caravan.:innocent:
I swear one day I'm going to crack some fucker in the head. The sheer stupidy of those I encounter is bizarre, and worse then what I encounter on the bike, much worse.
The shit that really fucks me off is when fuckers insist on passing (because hey, Its a caravan, I must be holding them up) when I'm in a queue of traffic, then they try and force in front of me.
You should see the fear in their eyes when I close up that gap instead.Tough shit cunt, You put yourself in the opposing lane, You can stay there.
Occasionally I just pull out and and pass them right back and use the caravan to squeeze em onto the shoulder, But that gets the wife a little upset.

ouch mean.
F'wits do that to car drivers to, had 2 today trying to race the merge one of which I knew their mean speed was less than mine but they had caught me at the lights and then got thought they would push in in front, I mean if you don't want to keep up with traffic why make a risky push to get in front?
I to have seen the silliness of the car drivers. How many times have you seen a car sitting virtually along side the slow vehicle that is pulled over, the car can have the whole lane to itself but not having the intelligence to go through? Yes I have had both the issue of the car that wont overtake until the pull over space is nearly gone and the ones that force their way through when it is dangerous for you.
I have also had the slow vehicle towing a trailer that I had to overtake using the slow vehicle lane because they refused to.

Aside from the fact I usually give the driver of a slower vehicle ... that pulls over for me ... a toot. It is a traffic infringement if you "impede the flow of traffic" ...
So ... legally ... it SHOULD be "taken for granted " they will pull over..

I hate idiots in front who pull over and expect you to pass on a blind corner.

It is perfectly legal and safe to pass AT ANY TIME so long as you do not cross the centerline.
How fucking wide do people think their cars are?
At 90kph a car seems to be 9m wide. By the time you slow to 20kph their car magically shrinks to 2.2m wide.
Average lane width is about 6m (correct me if I'm wrong) so with co-operation between BOTH parties passing a slower vehicle should be piece o piss.
I try to acknowledge ANY and ALL considerate road behaviour. Never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement.

Actually the state highways are supposed to be 9 metres minimum ... (both lanes)
Trucks and busses are usually 2.5 metres wide ... and if passing one ... leave half a metre between vehicles or somebody will lose their mirrors ...

I'll say it again,a drivers license doesn't make you a driver, just merely you are allowed to operate the vehicle the license applies to.
How many idiots when arriving upon slower vehicles have the first driver pass, but rather than wait to see if the way is clear,3 or 4 drivers follow like leemings at a cliff.
Truckies are great, people when the right indicator flashes for a couple of flashes he is signalling you to pass, hell he's in a higher vehicle and can see ahead. My pet peeve in the car is when I can see the indication and the twat in front of me won't pass.
I wave or toot 95% of time when people pull over, and appreciate it in the car, although having 6 cylinders has the power on hand.

Welcome to the world of bus drivers and truckies! It's an eye-opener, eh? I always toot an acknowledgement to considerate drivers who pull over and try not to scare them by overtaking in a silly manner...

Having spent the majority of my life working alongside truckies, I say fuck to that. Never ever put your life in some strangers hands, don't pass a truck unless you yourself can see the road ahead and are comfortable with that option, What the truck driver thinks or does with his indicator should have no bearing on the actions you take and the risk you put yourself at. People are morons, Truck drivers are no exception.

I agree 100%. In fact I may have been one of thse people who will not pass unless I can see the road ahead.
That attitude has served me safely and well for over 20 Years now.

Tbh, it was quite some time before I had it explained to me that a truck flashing its indicator meant it was "safe" for me to overtake them. I still wouldn't feel comfortable doing it unless I could see the road ahead for myself. So, despite truckies doing it as a "be nice to the motorist behind me" thing, I wouldn't automatically pull out to move past.

Funny enough they also do it to say hello when the see another truck coming from the other direction and when they intend to turn.

Motorhomes have a two fold problem.
Not only are campers generally underpowered compared to trucks and commercial buses, but the drivers are not professional drivers as most larger vehicles have, but often oldies and those out for a Sunday stroll.
I drive very slow nowadays, but only if no one is behind. If I see a vehicle coming up behind me, I speed up, or hug the verge, or pull over.
Because many campers are wide and 90km/hr max vehicles, pulling over should occur more often than it does occur.
A few years ago, towing a trailer maximum speeds were increased due to frustration accidents from held up motorists.
Personally I like following a slow camper, great for increasing my MPG:woohoo: and I cant be blamed for going slow

How do you acknowledge a motorhome? A car is too low down to see a wave while passing or when pulling away, and I don't like using the horn since that is intended to be a warning device.

And I have noticed a few bikes doing it at night as well.
Back to passing when truckies indicate, perhaps I should add as long as the passing driver can pass without his/her car invading most of on coming lane, very few seem to understand where the left hand of their car is,and pass with a lane between, that can be dangerous for sure.

As has been said, always double check. The truckies are for the most part professional, and great, but check they mean the indicator for you, before assuming. You only need to take a ride in a big rig (ie, couple of trailers attached to the horse) to realise how small the lane is for them, the trailers are constantly shunting the horse from their weight, and if you think the road is bumpy for us, imagine their number of wheels getting bounced around.

If on bike I use left hand waist height wave; if in car quick toot toot (which is not the same as the long blast of "what are you doing you stupid prat?" variety).
Have I just made this qualify as a waving thread?
