It looks very similar to the Oregon Scientific Cameras. Unless it is a late model, don't get one.

OK, that saved me 70 bucks! Any particular reason? It did sound a bit too good to be true.

I don't know if the camera they are selling is in fact Oregon Scientific - but it does look very similar.

I have the ATC2K version. I believe later versions are better.

The 2K does a reasonable job but has a couple of major drawbacks. First off, you have to be careful mounting it to see what you want it to see. No viewfinder or LCD screen means you have to aim it by pointing it in the right place. Several times I have collected footage of the road racing past underneath the bike - or the sky at the other end of the spectrum. Not often totally off line but enough to make the footage useless.

When I had a V-Twin bike, if I mounted the camera on the bike itself, the images produced had a vertical waving effect through them. I looked it up online and found quite a few references to this phenomenon. The popular theory seemed to be that the V-Twin configured engines produced some kind of electronic interference. Not sure how accurate this is but the distortion is obvious. And bloody annoying. I have yet to try this camera mounted on the IL4 to check if it is better.

The 2K is also hard on batteries - you need those incredibly expensive Lithium batteries and you go through them at a rate of knots. Sound is not that great (lots of wind noise) and image quality is average at best.

You can see some of the footage I have produced with the camera on You Tube...HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g59Z073VlZE)....and...HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeI_Il3Mq9c)

Both sequences shot with the camera mounted on helmet.

For a look at the "waving" effect, see HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSnVi8Q0THw)

This one was with camera mounted on mirror stalk on the V-Twin.

I agree with Slofox on this, no point in repeating what he said.

Other than to add that due to the length of the things, there is not a lot of leeway between pointing it at the ground and pointing it at the sky.

They were probably the mutt's nuts when they very first came out, but now there are many, many better options out there.

Caveat: This is assuming the original premise of the camera being an ATC2K knock off is correct.

I have one and although it does the job, it has a few major flaws.

Resolution is low, sure sometimes 640x480 is practical but often you really want HD

It has trouble with anything but perfect lighting situations and will generally produce washed out video

The microphone is almost bearable when you are stopped but useless above 30Kmph due to wind noise.

Definitely don't get one. Crap resolution, crap file formats. Used it once, and haven't bothered to use it again. Got a GoPro instead, and use that all the time!!! Bit more expensive but well worth it.

Have one, used for off road, but it's way too narrow angle, somewhat disappointed when after doing massive wheelies, the camera didn't even show the front coming up :(

Thanks all, I get the impression they're a bit on the shit side

Will save up for a decent one then, thought it was worth a stab.

Cheers

Actually that's not too bad, did a good job of recording the fucktard's number plates, hope you referred them to the appropriate authorities / panelbeaters

The woman in the second vid looked horrified when I pulled up beside her at the next lights and pointed to the camera on my helmet. T'was priceless.

The video is actually a little better than what you see there, it's been compressed a bit. It's faaarrrrrken slow to transfer files though. USB v1 I think. It's faster to whip the card out and put into a card reader.
