No this has nothing to do with Density Cult...
I was wondering... When it comes to modifing/customizing your bike, where do you draw the line?
I always draw the line where the money runs out lol, but I still have a list as long as my arm that I'd like to do to my bike... Such as...
Install Oggy Bars
Get a new Paint Job
Install a fuel guage
Install a Visibike Kit
Install an alarm
Re-cover my seats
Install a tinted windscreen (not double bubble)
Have all my lines and tubes thingys the same colour
Install that light thingy that is tuned into your Rev's so the lights light up the faster you go or when you change up a gear (I dunno... but they look nice)
And a bunch more stuff that I can't remember right now... And as you can proberly notice all the things I've listed are cosmetic and not so much performance based...
With your bike is it performance based or cosmetic?

Depends how ghey you are.
Questions:
How new/good are your tyres?
When was your suspension fluid last changed?
When was your rear suspension linkages last regreased & checked for wear?
Steering head bearings?

Whether or not I can get it approved by the finance department, which means it has to be either something that improves safety, or something that is necessary and unavoidable maintenance.
If I could get whatever I liked for the VFR, I'd have the seat reshaped and recovered, and get a louder horn. Apart from that, the only thing I'm considering in the future is braided brake lines.

And state of your motor?? Does it smoke? :)
I only do mods for practical reasons and only worth doing if you are going to keep the bike a long time as it's money you'll never get back. So far i've modified the exhaust (cost $0). Installed visibike kit ($65). Thinking of getting a bigger fuel tank ($300-$400). My bike has a rev counter so I don't need no fancy lights but then i'm not an extrovert either. At parties you'll find me in the corner not sure what to do. Sad but true....

My current bike isn't worth modifying as I'm probably going to blow it up soon anyway with my 12,000rpm rides.... anyway I'd go for performance all the way:Punk:
... but for my next bike .......:devil2: ......lets see - ZXR400 or TRX850... both will be made tastefully faster:love:

I know my bike ain't perfect, but I'm not very mechanically minded, so aiming to improve the performance to me wouldn't be the best move, firstly because (I admit) I'm still a Newbie (and always will be) and I have a lot to learn... I'm getting the hang of controlling my bike at 100kph... I don't need my bike to be able to go 200kph... because the chances of me riding that fast wouldn't happen often if ever...
So I'd rather trick my bike out in other ways... if I was into racing it'd be a different story...

IMO it's best described this way me thinks:
:ride: + + :Punk: + + :buggerd: - :nono: - :weird: - :puke: =
Less is best I d'reckon. Keep things to a minimum and the bike looking as stock as possible.

Never see the point of paying lotsa money for go faster stuff m'self . Fine if it's a bit of a joke (how fast can you make a step thru go ? ), but otherwise - well, there ain't no substitute for cubes.
Sell bike, buy bigger one. Or buy one with more whizzy bits that go round and round and round and round and round and round and up and down and up and down and round and .. yeah well y'get the idea.
Or, if y' really want high performance, get a two smoker.

I think you reach a stage where you just think bout your other expenses and prioritise your expenses...*gotta say i still have not reached that stage yet, though i have a feeling i very soon will*
There is soo much stuff in the market for the bikes. Ofcourse not as much as cars. Example for my bike, I really wanted a NOS bottle , then wanted to change the underlight / tail (but cant really do this as i cant find the tail with the decals already fitted), then comes the crash knob, alarm (got it, now saving up for the pager) , rims (mine is already polished, so thats good), clear taillight / indicators and ofcourse the exhaust.
Other then that, i guess the other mods you can do is with the performance and i think im just glad with the 600 at the moment.

I'm with F5 Dave on this. When I have the cash it's braided brake lines, uprated brake pads, uprated suspension, and then new tyres when required.
You can have as much power as you want, or carbon add-ons, but it doesn't mean anything if you can't stop, go around corners, or get the power to the ground smoothly.
Mind you there's a nice Givi screen that I wouldn't mind adding for these cooler winter commutes.

As for the topic. Somewhat sad that NZ doesn't have much of a Sportbike customizing scene. I don't like most of that American bling with the rediculously long wheelbases and totally unrideable. But a bit of personality put into one's machine has got to be good.
I suppose maybe it's because sportsbike riders don't plan on keeping their machines long in general, so it's not really worth doing too much to it expect for performance related mods.

Yeah... I know it looks like I'm just going for the image, but for now I am seriously happy with the power my bike puts out. Sure I'd love to brag that I rode 240kph on a lil 250... but I know I'd proberly kill myself (and/or others) even trying. I'm not willing to push myself beyond my limits, and risk everything for a number.
I'd rather have a bike that is "mine" in the sense that it's safe to ride, it's in good condition, and that I know I've put a lot of effort into it, even it's just cosmetic.
Because I don't know a lot about the mechanics of a bike (not that I'm not willing to learn because I am... and I'm trying) once I start to pick up on my mechanical skills (lol) it'll soon change to mechanical things that I want.

Very wise indeed. Would that more people (not just bikers) thought that way.
I am always inclined, when I hear of people spending much money on extra performance stuff, to wonder "Are your skills really so far in excess of the power you have at present , that lack of power is the ONLY obstacle to faster progress?".
The cheapest high performance add on is usually a more skilfull rider. :ride:

A granny on a ZXR 250!! Now that is something I'd like to see.
Come on I'm sure you've got all the 'Screamin Eagle' bits and tassled saddlebags. And that's just for the XN85.

Lou (and Pwalo) you should read the book hog HOG FEVER Travels on my Harley by Richard La Plante, quite funny and goes a long way to explaining Harley ownership!!
Having said that I did NOT plaster my H-D with golden eagle emblems! (unlike this author).
And I'm not big on saddle bags pwalo so I've only got a pair of NZ made cordura items (that let all the contents get good and wet).

lol yeah it's spelt that on purpose :Punk:
Nothing has re-sale value anymore :) The way I see it... biking is my passion... if I'm going to buy a bike and worry about the "re-sale" price... then I'm obviously planning on selling it at a later date... if I plan to sell it then there means there is something wrong with it (not mechanically... just things like... too small... not the model I want e.t.c) to cause me to want to sell it... if thats the case then I might as well not buy it... and if I do buy it... then theres nothign stopping me making it into my dream bike... And no a 250 is not my dream bike... but for another 18 months it is...
*confuses myself sometimes... but it's ok I'm on my own planet and they know me here :)*

Cool! Double Yay 4 U. I've ordered a LOOBMAN for mine. Had a scottoiler on my VFR750FL and that was great but they are $239.00 and the loobman about $48ish. Only difference is that the loobman is manual (ya have to give it a squeeze before you ride) Think I can live with that.

Still waiting on a price for my 23litre Acerbis tank...... Then I should be able to go 350+ kms per tank...... Probably take about 3 months to get here tho :(
Should i get heated grips??? It's a bit cold at 5:30 am on the way to work. I reckon heated gloves witha small nuclear reactor in each would be the go, wouldn't want to crash in them tho

lol yeah you'll come home and your bike will be in bits with the wiring everywhere... *can see it now* "But dad... I was just trying to...." And as much as he tries to justify it... you'll know its revenge for removing his fuses in the car lol
I only have one 20cm tube with 4 blue LED's in it under the seat, it's not very noticeable which is good as it shouldn't attract too much unwanted attention... I considered putting in a second tube to make the glow brighter but couldn't be bothered... now I'm used to it :)
XTC: Vifferman has grip warmers on his bike, so if you need any information I'm sure he'd be able to help you out on how good they are :)
I thought about installing a warmer thingymabob on my bike... but the only time it's really cold is in the mornings... and on a bad day it still only takes me 15 minutes to get to work... so I couldn't really justify it  Although I do try... hehe
