Following on from the Huge fun that the South Island N.A.D.S. had beach racing in the summer, I think its time us North Islanders formed our own team and got in on the action...

http://www.momcc.co.nz/index.php?pag=nw&id=161&p=speed-weekend.html

Most of the details here, just waiting to hear if us adv boys are to enter in the 'open' or 'road' class.
Any of you up for the hill climb the next day?
Looks like fun, and is included in the entry fee, again waiting to hear if the MNZ 'Day' license covers both days or if another $20 is needed for sunday.
In any case, pretty cheap really $60 all up for a day on the beach:woohoo: and maybe only another $20 for the hillclimb as well:rockon:

I'm sure looking out the window today, it may not seem like the greatest idea:facepalm: But I've booked some sunny winter weather with the organisers:sunny:

Sounds like a great day out Gav24 & pretty reasonable. Just a tip- silicon or crc the bikebefore you go out-heaps easier to clean the next day.
If the Nads were there it wouldbe a great civilwar

I can just picture it...

No my crash was more spectacular!
But mine was mentioned on the PA!
But I crashed 2 laps in a row!

Need a consistent scoring system for crashes.

Great idea Gav but that's a long drive for me.......I'll do a lap of Muriwai in support!

Suspiciously quiet from the central and lower North Islanders...

I need to call on the NADS PR department to post up some pics and vids to show how cool racing on the beach on an ADV bike really is...:corn::corn:

Then I must be really bad at beach racing because crashing in a beach race is something I am yet to experience.

My advice is to go for it guys cos its a heap of fun. Try to get in the roady class cos the 450s are bloody fast, and beach racing is mostly about outright speed.

not really my cuppa tea
I was born without any competitive gene
I'd rather spend the day trying to get up cnut hill than rorting up and down a beach

have fun

Don't worry about being competitive- you'll be riding a KLR:yes: It's one of those things you should do before you kick the bucket. Riding down a beach may be a luxury that will be disappearing in the future.

Gav if we were there we'd be roosting with ya. Maybe you have to plan a few days down here over new years.

Luckily no 450's in the open class, as they are running an mx1 class for those...
Should just leave big huskies, katooms etc in the open class then.:crybaby:
Will push the club on a bit for an answer on what class for adv bikes. They are a bit slow on email responses...

C'mon guys - you wont be the only adv bike there:violin:

Surely the pure "no speed limit on the beach" option is at least inticing?
I enjoy a good rip up Muriwai at pace, but always feel bad about doing over the 60kph limit.

Nothing better than blatting up the beach - here we have pines / woodend / waikuku which are great not many people on them (they do train horses down there but you can see them miles away) :woohoo: Went down there one day in my road boots - drift wood stick through just above the ankle (luckily missed my leg) and now they don't seem to be waterproof  so now my off road boots only unless of course I am passing and it's a nice day and the tide is out :innocent:.
After the Nads beach racing exploits over new year I tried my hand - luckily no one witnessed it - harder than it looks  scheeze my bike is heavy to lift up!

I'd like to, but that weekend doesn't work for me. In fact, not many weekends work for me at the moment.

Is the body armour compulsory?

Edbear

That sounds like far too much fun! I'd love to do it but alas I can't ride now! :bye:

Can I enter the MX5..? :innocent:

Why isn't beach racing more popular and a regular scene? Maybe I could arrange it for Orewa Beach? 3km long and a perfect surface!

Jeez guys - Its just me at the moment then:facepalm:

Dont let this quote be your beach racing adventure story:-
"They said I should go for it, so in the end I went for it.
- But when I got there it had gone...":bye:

This is the 125th anniversary event/weekend. It may be another 125 years til the next one...

If not the beach racing - who's for the gravel hill climb? :scooter::scooter:
Surely a more adv friendly weekend you could not find...

I'd be kinda keen, beach racing was fun at the Burt, & would be more fun against a DR than just a gaggle of CR500+'s :shit::shutup: ...but got the NNLT next weekend & then a few too many weekend jobs piling up around the place unfortunately :bye:

Cheers

Sounds great! Apart from the fact I have to work every weekend.

This event fits the bill of a moments inspiration I had watching the rallying on the box at the weekend. Timed gravel stages for road legal bikes with a few special sections chucked in for a laugh.

Looks like you wont be the only one getting their "moments of inspiration off the box"...
...or Youtube...

I understand though, having 2 kids under 3 I have to grab these opportunities when they come up.
I just thought a few more would want to grab them as well...

(Sucks to work weekends though:bye:)

Would love to but Waitarere is a bit to far/expensive with the ferry etc.

Used to spend my childhood summers there at the family beach house. Great fun when the old man used to hoon along the beach and doing donuts in the mk7 Jag with us kids hanging out the sunroof waving toi tois around.

A bit more warning and I would love to do it if its on next year.

Just checked The Emporium stock list and I see a Daytona brand rod type adjustable steering damper.

Bit like the bank climbing switch on the DR350?

:devil2:

According to the manifesto, the Daytona damper is in area 13b.2 which indicates it may be found to the right of the window on the beam with the GPS bits, 2nd in from the left.

Latest info from the beach race organisers...

1. On the day they would be willing to run an "adv bike" class in with the "road bikes" if there are a few of us entered, but otherwise I have to ride my bike in the open class if its just me.
2. Its on-the-day entry so all classes can be sorted then.
3.entry fee is per event - not for the gravel hillclimb as well - so all in with the MNZ fee; $60 for the beach racing (although they did hint at allowing the "day " license to roll over for 2 days, making the gravel hill climb only $40...)
4. No freshwater wash off provision at the venue - but I do have a mate with a bach at foxton beach who could be persuaded to lend us his hose pipe at the end of the day...

Still waiting for interest from you NI adventure riders.... :crybaby:
(Thanks Pikey! I knew I could rely on you, even if you decide to be pit crew and not take the new bike on the beach:shit:)

Calling all you NADS! What tyres did you run?
I was hoping to leave my Mich. T63's on for the ride up and the racing.
I do have some knobblies I could put on the front though - Damn that 17 inch rear, nothing knobbly in the spare tyre corner in that size:facepalm:

I ran a T63 rear and a mt21 front.

Rear was good, spun up a bit but fine. Managed 140 km/hr before braking which is probarbly similar to tar speed over the same distance.

The front mt21 was really impressive. I was pulling the front brake lever hard into the bar and the front stayed planted. Mind you the KLR is chronically under braked.

I ran a brand spanking new tyre like an E09 with broad wide bars at the back ( i get confused with numbers but Woodman or Nordie know what they are Kenda 760/ t63 or something). On the front a new D606.

I was (am) pretty inexperienced at sand riding however just watched the guns before me & copied their riding style, sitting right back stretched out. Unfortunatley I never had enough laps under my belt to get the turns right. The KLR wanted to go really wide under power & I couldn't seem to get it in tight with the throttle on.

My clutch went after the first race so I couldn't carry on (well I could of if I'd diagnosed the very easy problem with it at the time), however watching the other NADS that were dorking me on the track, it surprised me how much faster it all seems when you're out there doing it.

Extending the 'race day' licence is a very good practical idea to get numbers returning.

I'm not sure which day i'd like best - full tit on the sand or having a gravel road closed off & no worries about oncoming traffic. man it'll be a blast:woohoo:

Marks will have a partially used Kenda 760 rear that would be good if he doesn't kill it this weekend :D

The Kenda 760 130/17 is about $100

I do have some knobblies I could put on the front thoughI ran a set of proper sand tyres, Shinko 540's at 11psi. I was seeing 155 on the clock which meant with that gearing about 30km/h of wheelspin. In hindsight I probably could have run taller gearing to bring the revs down to the meat of the power curve, for a bit more speed.

The T63 rear should work okay as long as it is fresh, as having some tread depth is probably the most important thing down the straights. However the front T63 has shallow knobs that are reputed to not work very well in loose sand - so slap on one of your spare Ken-obliwans.
