View Full Version : God damn trademe

Trying to sell stuff on trademe so listed a couple of mountain bikes cheap. One sold within hours the other took longer and eventually went to a last minute bidder in napier (reserve was met beforehand). Auction said pick up only (hamilton) and the guy had one negative feedback for another last minute bid that he did not want in the end which got me a bit suspicious.

Surprisingly he paid me and arranged shipping and the bike was sent so i was happy. Turns out i had listed it as 27 speed instead of 21. Simple typo wasn't intending on misleading anyone. He wanted a 27 speed for a project. At no stage did he ask any questions about the bike.

Now im pissed off.

What should i do? I am holding back on telling the guy to fuck off as it was my fault for listing it incorrectly (accidently) but his fault for not asking any questions and ignoring the pick up only.

To be fair, if the auction said it was a 27 speed I probably wouldn't ask the question "Are you sure?".

Sorry, your cockup. He didn't need to ask, it was listed as 27 speed. But I wouldn't pay his freight costs....

Why such a big deal?

1. Simple, tell him sorry mate here's your money it's actually a 21 speed.
2. Contact trademe to refund fees, trade finished as uncompleted.
3. Happy ending.

Bugger. Defo your mistake. Ask him what he wants to do. He might keep the bike if you drop a bit of cash back his way. Or you could get him to send the bike back and give him a refund minus the shipping fee.

Sorry sil3nt, but this is your mistake and hence there is no reason the buyer should be out of pocket should he decide he doesn't want the bike. I would suggest that you offer a full refund, and refund any transport costs and accept it as an expensive mistake. That way you will still get good rep for being upfront and being seen to put things right.

An alternative may be to offer to buy a 27 speed gear set for the bike if this is less expensive than a refund.

Buyer must pick up. Pick up is in Whatawhata just outside Hamilton but can bring in to Hamilton if required.

Shipping details

Buyer must pick-up
Seller is located in Hamilton, Waikato

How hard is that for people to understand.

Will advise him that he can send the bike back to me at his cost for a refund. Or he can simply list on trademe himself he should easily make more than what he paid.

Two thoughts and first one is buyer beware-if in doubt ask questions, although to be fair asking a question of "is it 27 speed" sounds stupid if auction says so,therefore the wording means he bought a 27 speed in good faith, you supplied 21 speed(honest mistake)due to typing error,so I'd be happy as buyer of a few dollars,or if after refund would expect the freight as well as price refunded,I feel it's a mute point that you advised pick up as any descrepency would be picked up at pick up,but you sent it onto him so a handling fee for that could be withheld from refund.

Why is it "God damn trademe"?

Accept responsibility for your own mistake, and stop blaming the buyer and the trading site.

So you said "pick up only" And he arranged to have it picked up. That's good.

The only person in the wrong here is you for listing it as a 27 speed when it was not.

Man up to your responsibilities. You have misrepresented your item. Refund the guy the price and freight charges.

I recently bought an item described as crystal on TradeMe. If it had been glass or plastic instead, I would not have been happy.

if you bough an incorrectly labelled sprocket for your bike, and went to take it back, would you expect them to tell you to fuck off for their mistake?

a pain I know, but shit happens

haha obviously I didnt tell him to fuck off. All my auctions are listed as pick up only. Had he come around and seen the bike like i was expecting the buyer to then all this could have been avoided. Had i listed the auction correctly all this could have been avoided.

Options have been given now we wait and see :corn:

Why are you even posting this here?

We all make mistakes, it's not that we make them that matters so much as what we do about them.
You fucked up (albeit a genuine mistake). Put it right. End of story.

Still - you agreed to ship it? yes?

Think of it this way. Say you were buying the item and it was important to you the motorcycle had a 6 speed and not 5 speed box. The seller says pick up only, but you both agree to ship at your expense.

You get the motorcycle to find it is only a 5 speed. The seller offers a refund.

Who should be out of pocket for freight?

You could argue if it was pick up only, you wouldn't refund the person's petrol to pick it up the first time. However you made the advertising mistake - which means you bare the cost of it.

Ask the guy to re-list it on your behalf, after the auction has finished if he's still out of pocket refund the difference including freight. If he makes more money on-selling it good luck to him.
