"thanks for the mail... i would have loved to transact on phone but am
currently on rig as i work for a Petroleum company in which i need to
be on shore so its a bit hard to call you right now because calls are
been restricted. we can as well complete the transaction on here. .i
am keen about buying it from you and am ready to buy it as is, so am
offering you $11,200. As for the pick up, my agent will be doing that
once i have completed the payment with you. i will like you to get
back to me with your paypal email so i can send the funds as soon as i
can or your bank details so i can send the funds straight from my
paypal into your bank account. Once you have the funds, then we can
schedule a date when you will be available so that my agent can get it
picked up.. thanks.."

My bike is on TradeMe for $10,500 ono. This dude asked me to email him my asking price, which of course I said was $10,500 ono. This is what he came back with. Now I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but do I really look that gullible..?

Actually the guy sent me his home address in his last email. If you deposit $199 in my bank account I'll send it to you.

First clue is a gmail address. Second clue is language, third is the offer of more than you're asking, fourth is the pay pal or Western Union payment.

After I replied that it smelt like a pay-pal scam he never got back to me.

Oh, no the first clue is it was a txt msg to which you can't reply.

Balu had one as well, although TradeMe had sent an email warning him about a likely contact from a scammer.
He replied from his work email saying "$........ accepted upon pick up only". Hasn't heard back from the chappie. Funny that. (The $.... was the price it was advertised at of course).

Yeah, TradeMe have warned me a couple of times now. They try to be on top of this sort of thing but it's really up to us to be aware.

It's a scam. This guy tried the same thing with me when I was selling my R34 Skyline GTt. As it turned out before he would transfer the money you had to send $1000 dollars to the agent. I had smelt a rat and wanted to know where it was, this was it. They seemed nice but you lose $1000 in the bargain as they never front with the money. I didn't transfer any money, called their bluff and they disappeared in a puff of smoke...

pity it is so hard to find them otherwise the puff of smoke could be a 3000 feet per second with a lump of lead in front
& its illegal to shoot people no matter how much they deserve it

I used to scambait internet scammers - we would enter into a dialogue with them and get them to do silly things. You waste their time, and can do some nasty things to them (that might not be actually legal).

I had one lad ride his motorbike from Cotonou, Benin, to Lagos, Nigeria, to meet me. I was on a plane from Capetown back to London and was going to divert to lagos to give him some money. He arrived in lagos with no money, having had to bribe the border officials, and I was mugged on my way to the airport in Capetown, suffered a broken collarbone and concusion, and never made the flight to Lagos.

I wonder if it would be illegal to have a policeman there waiting for them to take the bike and then jumping on them.
- Fraud
- Theft
- All sorts of good charges to throw at them

They never come for the bike.
