This thread is to clarify what we do and distribute in the suspension world in New Zealand

As most of you will know we have a huge presence in the road race world, with the results to prove it. But in fact most of our work is selling and upspecing suspension for everyday road riders who are seeking MUCH better ride quality on our bumpy roads but also with much improved chassis control.

Also, although we havent had a heavy focus on it over the last few years we are doing more and more MX work and we do a little bit of race car work

CUSTOM BUILD of discontinued listings, one offs, VINTAGE MX etc are all specialities

This is a list of what we distribute / source and some candid comments about some of the products we selectively dont onsell;

OHLINS Our staple, the most famous suspension brand in the world. Almost everyone has used this product at some stage to win races and national championships. Still very much at the top of the tree in international road racing and also HERE IN NEW ZEALAND, having won the 3 major titles at the last TriSeries and the 5 major 2011 NZ ROAD RACE TITLES. Unashamedly we worked very hard at this and the results showed.
BUT, road racing is only a bit part of the market. the reality with Ohlins is that there is a very wide range of suspension listings for ordinary everyday road going bikes ( and dirt bikes )for as I said, riders wanting much better ride quality and chassis control. Where a listing is discontinued ( eg for an older bike ) we custom build off the archival spec card.
The Ohlins products we dont sell are their 20mm and 25mm piston kits as they are ''too agressive'' for road use, they are road race specific.

ALSO, WE HAVE CREATED A VERY STRONG SECONDHAND MARKET AND WE TRADE USED OHLINS FOR NEW. As the most sought after product there is strong residual value. None of our competitors offer such a regular facility, if at all.

RACE TECH. We are the master Race Tech centre for New Zealand and fit and optimise lots of their piston kits to both forks and shocks. We fit these because its simple, their front fork pistons are the very very best on the market at absorbing bumps! But still retaining and in fact enhancing chassis control and stability. Very often we will fit an Ohlins rear shock and get asked by the customer to also fit Ohlins 20 or 25mm kits to the stock cartridges. We absolutely insist on in this instance fitting RACE TECH piston kits as they perform much better at bump compliance duties on our bumpy roads and tracks.

At the just completed road race nationals Midge Smart and Jaden Hassan finished first equal on points in Superstock 600, a class that states you must run the stock rear shock and fork cartridges, but you are allowed to modify the internals. So we pragmatically used a combination of the best available and best performing parts. In the rear shock we used a Race Tech flow seperator in tandem with an Ohlins 40mm Indycar piston, Ohlins spring and oil. In the front Race Tech rebound and compression pistons with Ohlins fork springs and oil. Ohlins steering damper with a Traxxion Dynamics bracket

TRAXXION DYNAMICS We sold a lot of this stuff a few years back and in fact have never stopped being the distributor. Traxxion have a few listings in their range that Ohlins and Race Tech dont and they make a few components that are quite clever and nice. Over the last 3 years all the riders on SV650s at the sharp end of Pro twins racing have been using Traxxion Dynamics damper rods which tighten up all the tolerance and alignment to give much better damping control, in tandem with our own road race spec modified RACE TECH EMULATORS. We have been selling a bit of Traxxion Dynamics stuff and because of our long term relationship and on site training with them ( about 7 years back ) they reccommend CKT for installation

K-TECH Ive had dialogue with their sales manager Chris Taylor a few times and in fact again only a few days ago. If we wish to buy parts off them they will sell to us as they are well aware of our huge and long standing presence in the NZ market. The reality is if we so choosed we could be their distributor but that would then be an unacceptable conflict of interest with Ohlins. But K-Tech would still sell to us on a requirement basis as they know we have an excellent track record of following through on installations and making sure they work properly.
BUT the reality is that they only have a road race specific range and even at the current exchange rate pricing is a problem. Also their fork piston kits are biased more towards road racing and by implication wont work as well in absorbing bumps ON ROAD as well as big port piston kits. This is exactly the same reason we wont sell Ohlins 20mm and 25mm road race specific piston kits.
Great product but only a very small targeted and specific range, no shock listings for everyday road bikes etc.

RICOR INTIMINATORS We tested these with a view to distribute but were less than impressed. If anyone is interested Ill start a thread about the issues with damper rod forks, but its a big subject

PENSKE We have for several years been able to source these shocks and our sell price is no different to buying out of the States. Again a great product and I guess for someone who doesnt want an Ohlins this is a great alternative. PLUS, you know that if you buy off us you have the security of knowledge in knowing that we provide full and proper backup, for example spring exchange if the fitted spring rate proves to be not quite ideal plus we have also trained in the US for servicing Penske

SHOWA AND KAYABA REBUILD PARTS, ALSO FOR SACHS, PLUS SPRINGS. A lot of bread and butter work for us is rebuilding and servicing everyday shocks for everyday riders ( most of us! ) at affordable and realistic prices.

TOTAL COMMITTMENT

Myself and my very capable sidekick Dennis Shaw have each been rebuilding / servicing suspension units for coming up to 30 years. We are not new boys on the block and are therefore VERY EXPERIENCED. Our workshop is state of the art and we dont cut corners on service tools, if we need it we have it! We have a state of the art vacuum shock bleeder ( some of you may have seen this at the last two rounds of the road race champs ) That means we can change the oil in shocks very quickly and very efficiently. Much much better than doing it by hand!

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OF TALL CLAIMS SUCH AS ''YOU CAN INSTAL THIS AND YOURE NEVER GOING TO HAVE TO TOUCH IT"( and as a conman once said to me about another character , ''it takes a conman to recognise a conman'' ) The conversation I had with Chris Taylor touched on the difficulty companies like theirs have with finding distributors. Such companies need technicians with feet on the ground at meetings to tune / optimise suspension. There is no suspension that is ''bolt in and go'', optimisation is needed at every track, especially if you want to be competitive. Thats down to the grace and work ethic of suspension technicians. If your technician is indolent or disinterested then you are in trouble. And Im going to make no apology for saying this, we saw stark evidence of that very issue during the road race nationals, as did many other people. (We ourselves struggle to please everyone but at least we try!)

SET UP TIPS / MANUALS / FREE AND SINCERE ADVICE. We stand tall and proud on this one, not only in helping people but helping them to understand. We wont bore you with tall stories or any nonsense, we are there to get your suspension working properly.

Further to my initial ''diatribe'' I forgot to mention 2 other things, as follows;

1) Ohlins now have a massively expanded range of what we call ''value level'' rear shock absorbers for many ''regular'' everyday bikes such as Suzuki Bandits and many other Suzuki listings, Yamaha FZ6, FZ8, FZ1 and many other Yamaha listings, Hondas, Kawasakis, scores of BMW listings, scores of Triumph listings incl Daytona 675, Ducatis etc. Many metric cruiser listings also
$1099 gst incl with our well respected very comprehensive backup and trade in or respec policy when you change to another make and model of bike in the future.
We have sold a good number of these already and they are ''just what the doctor ordered''. Simple to instal, that famous Ohlins quality of build and longevity and above all, SUPERB COMPLIANCE AND COMFORT ON OUR ROADS BUT WITH IMPROVED CHASSIS CONTROL AND STABILITY. ( Complimentary spring exchange also applies as ''spring rate calculators do not cover all variables )

In the front end we instal very competitively priced OHLINS FORK SPRING KITS and oil as a ''Level 1'' improvement

''Level 2'' If they are damper rod forks we instal RACE TECH EMULATORS. These are the original and the best and are made of a durable material with highest quality long life poppett springs. The devil is in the detail, we very pedantically instal these and correct many of the issues inherent in damper rod forks, for example very poor assembly alignment of the damper rods that in turn creates lots of ''uncontrolled bleed'' The success of how the instal works is totally dependent on this attention to detail

If they are cartridge style forks we instal HIGH FLOW RACE TECH BASE PISTON KITS. These of all the kits available from overseas are the very best at absorbing nasty bumps. Because they actually pay LOTS of attention to this very real issue.

BUT WE ALSO NOW HAVE A LEVEL OF '' HS '' Japanese sourced HIGH FLOW PISTON BASE COMPRESSION KITS WITH A CHARACTERISTIC ALMOST IDENTICAL TO RACE TECH $199.90 PER KIT ( does one pair of forks ) plus instal. That is a very very good price!!!

There is another factor here and we have respectfully observed ''etiquette'' on this time and time again. A good number of Showa forks already have base compression pistons that are BIG PORT HIGH FLOW but are almost always bastardised with very poor shimming and other factors. The flow characteristics are very similiar to Race Tech big port and in fact we instal valving on such Showa pistons that we have developed with Race Tech pistons. It achieves very nearly the same result but at a very significant cost saving to the customer. ITS UP TO THE INSTALLER TO BE TOTALLY SINCERE ABOUT THIS.

SO BEWARE OF ANY COMPANIES TRYING TO SELL YOU PISTONS THAT YOU DONT NEED OR WILL HAVE SMALLER PORTS THAT WILL NOT RIDE THE BUMPS VERY WELL!!!

The reality is when you go on a suppliers website they of course are not going to tell you that the standard compression pistons are at minimum perfectly adequate as they want to sell you their pistons!

Much of the emphasis of what we do is to often ditch the stock rebound pistons that have old style ''checkplate midvalve'' Compared to ''bending shim stack midvalve'' pistons these give very poor brake dive and pitch control because the ''horse is able to bolt from the stable door'' and then requires more force to catch it, via heavier base compression valving. Thats an 80s / 90s ''solution'', we are now in the second decade of the 21st century.

The Race Tech high frequency midvalve piston uses a ''bending shim stack midvalve'' and the rebound port sizes and disposition of them is just about a complete copy of an Ohlins piston. Unlike base compression ports rebound ports in fact need to be a little progressive in flow rate to help shape an ideal force damping curve without recourse to aggressive shimming that then gives initially too much low speed force. We have done a lot of work with these pistons and they are working very very well.

Currently, Race Tech are about the only people making BPF aftermarket piston kits and BPF forks sure have a lot of design defects and need lots of help. Many companies including Ohlins and K-Tech dont make psiton kis for these and will not do so as a) they make replacement cartridge kits and b) they take a very dim view of BPF forks and their inherent design defects. But with Superstock 600 racing here in NZ we have to run the stock structures, but are allowed to change the pistons.

2) OHLINS Thos company has approximately 70 engineers based at its facilities within Sweden and at its further facility in the business complex at the Nurburgring in Germany. Their capacity for R & D is enormous. They have produced well in excess of a million CES valves ( electronic suspension control units ) for leading automotive companies such as BMW, Audi, Ford, Volvo etc etc. This is technology that they commenced with way back in 1984. To not put too fine a point on it as soon as the governing bodies of motorcycle sport around the world get their heads out of the sand the electronic revolution in motorcycle suspension will build further pace. ''MECHATRONICS'' You can only stall progress for so long.
As a comparison 30 years ago you turned up with a box of jets and needles to laboriously tune those confounded flat slide carbs, now you turn up with a laptop. What would you rather do?
Irrespective there are some new developments and new products coming from Ohlins, the company that is always breaking new ground.
Ohlins married the twin tube recirculating concept to inline piston stacks and flow adjusters with their highly aclaimed and highly successful TTX shocks. That same concept has been since copied by at least K-Tech and Bitubo. Sincerest forms of flattery. But what is also not widely known is that in Japan Showa has also copied the concept, but its not for release especially outside of Japan as it would be ''loss of face'' to copy another companies product ''Sholins''

Look for more developments and exciting products from Ohlins in the very near future, fully backed up to a high level here in NZ

We ( CKT ) are always looking at new product but we always test first before selling commercially as overseas success and internet hype is never a foolproof guarantee. Ricor Intiminators are a prime example, lots of internet hype but the performance fell short of well installed Race Tech Emulators.
THE SUCCESS OR OTHERWISE OF A TECHNICAL PRODUCT IN THE LOCAL MARKET IS TO A VERY LARGE DEGREE DEPENDENT ON THE COMMITTMENT AND LEVEL OF BACKUP THAT THE LOCAL DISTRIBUTOR WILL BE WILLING TO PROVIDE. THIS IS NOT EASY FOR SUCH PRODUCTS AND NO-ONE SHOULD BE UNDER ANY ILLUSION THAT THIS IS A LOT OF WORK

Us lesser mortals may not understand much of what Robert talks about...... but rest assured HE KNOWS what he is talking about.
I run a race team at the lower end of the food chain in NZ and am humbled by the time taken to help us and the FIRST CLASS service offered by CKT. I will happily wait by the service trailor door while he deals to "the chosen ones":innocent: as it is then obvious that he treats all his customers equally. Just listening to the conversations is worth the wait.
Im one of those people who like to know whats actually being done and what it will achieve, and he is only to happy to take the time and exlpain things in a way in which i understand. And offer self-help problem solving advice which he doesnt have to do.
This may sound like a "bum lick" post but i deal with 100,s of supposed professional NZ companies every week and i can tell you ones of the CKT calibre can be counted on one hand.
A very happy to pay the price asked and wait my turn customer.

When are you going to open a branch (or three-times-a-year pseudobranch) in Auckland, Robert?

I still have to do my shock as we discussed before, but it's very hard to get there as the cost multiplies by a factor of 1.5 - 2.5 if we need to get down there. And we mere roadriding mortals don't have the ability to take our shocks off our bikes to send there, especially if we need it for commuting :bye:

Ill get to it as soon as I can, for seemingly simple forks its quite a big subject

Shouldn't take you too long! You don't have the distraction of flying fighter jets or catching monkeys.....

Hmmm, tried it in Wellington and had my trust belied big time. But the chickens are coming home to roost on that score because the reality is nowhere near as embellished as the wild stories. Say no more!

Also the age old problem, not enough hours in the day and a couple of training schools does not maketh a suspension technician!

We in fact have a lot of people that travel from Auckland or further, including the South Island. New Plymouth is a really nice place to visit!
