Has anyone seen a comparison test between these two bikes? If so where?

I have done an extensive test.

First I poked a bowl of jelly.(representing the BMW). It wobbled alot and then stopped.

Next, I poked a Tiger. It roared off, turned around and devoured me.

End result, the Tiger is a much more capable beast.
Sell that fat arsed Kaboom and go hunting Tigers.:msn-wink:

They are probably both great road bikes.

i've tested the 800 bmw engine.
result: it's way "too twin" for me.

i'd go with the tiger.

I have ridden both, the GS feels smaller than the Tiger, the Tiger is much smoother but the GS feels punchier with more go (maybe the Tiger was tight being pretty new)

The Tiger at least for me has too longer reach, the seat on the Tiger is far nicer than the GS.

Both bikes are great for road, shingle road and minor offroad IMO.

Seems the new GS's are still having the same issues they were having in 08 on so BWW really need to step it up or Triumph will steal their place.

Beware of KTM tho bringing out their 800 V Twin Adventure bike and probably with beautiful WP fully adjustable suspension .... this will wake up the sleeping dogs.

Good man, looking good too, ya make the bike look small Mark!!

Some TKC80's would be the deal there, trouble is on every run you extendable-retractable-inflatable-deflatable-increasing-decreasing-narrowing-widening tyres ... that should cover it

As you correctly note, more purposeful tyres would have helped.(though even a 990 needed the helper treatment) The Dr's tended to float whereas the Tiger sank. I used Shinko 705's but you just HAVE to have knobblies for that stuff. Over all very happy with the machine. Leaves sports bikes in the corners, and very comfy two up as well.

Haha -yup, that about covers it. Yeah, i was casting covetous eyes upon Stus TKC 80'S he had on the F800GS- might just have got away with it then:yes: Would have liked to have seen how he went but the Beemer got a flat battery and died earlier in the day!

They are still havin funny issues and some of it silly shit that shouldn't happen, suspect the Trumpy will treat you considerably better overall.

Loved the power delivery and smoothness of the triple, could get on with that very easily.

I am not looking to replace my 990, I am more than happy with it.

I just find it surprising that there have been no comparison tests between the BMW and Triumph yet. After all there are lots comparing the 990 to the 1200GS. I suppose they will come in time.

I think the Triumph is still too new - most reports I've seen are from the factory press day(s). NZ is usually one of the early mags to do proper reviews but we do not do a lot of comparisons - probably due to the small market.

I never understood why you'd compare a 990 to a 1200GS.
You may as well compare a FZR to a Goldwing - completely different concepts.

They are still competitors though and do very similar things, with one being more dirt orientated than the other (or so I have read....)

I've ridden them both.
Chalk and cheese.

Ones a dirt bike for the road, the others a road bike that's (sort of) off road capable.

I've owned all three and yes they are chalk and cheese - in a very European way...............didnt like the KTM vibes and the Beem was a weird fit fullstop !
The Tiger 800 does eat miles its motor is superb but I feel the finish is somewhat lacking - tank finishings parting company and bare metal rub marks near your pegs etc.....( 3000 kms )
Hear they are doing frame in dark/black for the next version ?

The local Tri dealer keeps asking me to take out the XC for a test ride. They take a hit on all the demo models so want as many people to ride them. I keep declining as the $4K excess in case of accident is a bit steep.

Because, at least a few years ago, there weren't a lot of bikes in that segment of mixing off road with on road.... I remember them even saying the bikes were different, one more off road, the other more on road...

Sports bikes, the japs have 4 bikes almost carbon copies of each other at identical capacities of 600cc and 1000cc. You don't really get identical bikes in the adventure touring bracket...

Not true.

One segment is GS copies: the Guzzi, the S. Tenere etc
The other segment is pretty much occupied by KTM alone.

Ha - not sure that I'd limit it to just 1 drop...........
Only ever been asked for license and to fill in ins.form when taking a demo out for a spin - and that was Anza
Bayride Tauranga and Motorad Wely seem to be pretty obliging.......

you may be a one eyed orange git but you are essentially right

whats amazing is ,with a few sensible mods (maybe $2k tops), how much fun you can have on 25yr old technology :woohoo:

which makes it really really hard to convince yourself that investing $20k plus mods on any of the multi cylinder adv bikes is a good idea

Yeah, actually LOOKING at them would be a start if you intend to slag them off, at least from an informed viewpoint:lol: I would be the first to acknowledge the limitations however, taking my wife on the back of a DR 650 was never an option. Just loved the DR off road but felt like i was on postie bike when back on the blacktop.

Yes - its exposed alright - I see they are using a shock sock overseas to add some form of protection
I placed a thin strip of rubber 100x12mm along the inside down its length and below the rear wheel - seemed to work OK

You definitely gota try them in the flesh All the press pics and hoopla dont do them justice !
They were made as an allrounder so you could always bling em out if its serious you want !
Triumph UK have branched out into the Adventure Tour thing and are now taking bookings for their Adventure Tours - Britain / Europe utilising the XC - can only be good for the bikes future genetics
Does sound familiar tho....................

Cheers for that. Yeah, great on the aforementioned surfaces. Not so good with 50/50 tyres in muddy 4wd tracks:( as i discovered last weekend. Its still very new so haven't had the bottle to risk dumping it yet though.

Oh, sorry, i thought this was the "slagging off thread", according to Nordie anyway. Even as a new owner, not in the same league as the 990 re more serious offroad. So rest easy pardner. Really need something like a 450 EXC for that stuff. Mind you, I'm sure with a more capable rider and aggressive tires they could go a lot further.

Looking at them and sitting on them, to me it'd basically come down to the engine.
I feel the twin would have the advantage over the triple in the sloppier sections but that's about it.

As an all-roads tourer I think the Trumpy would be teh winnerz.
