A tornado has overturned cars and "ripped up" buildings in the Auckland suburb of Albany.

The New Zealand Transport Agency had planned to close the Auckland Harbour Bridge but that plan is understood to have since been dropped.

The twister is now veering away from the bridge and is heading towards Mount Roskill.

Police say the Albany MegaCentre was in the path of the tornado which struck earlier this afternoon.

Pictures posted on Twitter showed damage at the old Placemakers building at the Albany Megacentre, adjacent to the new Westfield mall.

Mobile phone footage has shown the twister damaging buildings, while images sent into ONE News show cars left overturned.

SORRY BOYS NO NASS TOMORROW BECAUSE THE CARPARK IS DESTROYED!

Not surprised really. Common for tornados around the Auckland area I believe, though not on such a large scale as this.

Rode though the outskirts of it it seems without realizing what it was. A bit after 3pm.

Had to go over to North Shore today. Going up the motorway hill by Greville Rd off ramp wind got so bad that I could hardly make way into it and rain so heavy that couldn't see at all.
Decided discretion better part of Valour and pulled over into shelter to wait it out. After about 15 minutes it cleared to just ordinary crap weather so I proceeded. Motorway flooded though bad enough to be splashing round my boots in one place. Sirens everywhere.

Apparently Albanys been taken out by a tornado, must have been the outskirts of it

Worst riding conditions I can remember glad it only lasted a few minutes.

Not so good for the folk injured though a fee minutes was enough to be a mischief to them

I live in Rosedale 1.5km away from where it hit the mall. Amazing how it picks and chooses what to wreck. My place is fine but just down the road there are places with bits of roof missing and there are bits of building materials all over.

*If you're on the roads tonight around the shore BEWARE of the nails, screws and other tyre unfriendlies that have been blown all over the roads*

Thankfully PlaceMakers Albany had moved about 6 weeks ago so the building you see on the news was pretty much an empty shell. Had the timber yard still been full of stock....doesnt bear thinking about!

And the fact that there was zero winds lol.

Well that was exciting

I tossed up taking the bike this morning but am very glad I made the call to drive, thunder storms are not my fav riding conditions :pinch:

The weather was vile most of the day, it got steadily worse and I remember thinking it was the kind of weather tornados form in

There was this sound, kind of a roar ( we get the odd airforce plane low flying, but it was a different sound) then it turned into a ripping shrieking noise. Looked outside and thought there was a lot of large bits of cardboard blowing around, then I saw the silver and knew exactly what was happening  Tornado! It went down the end of our driveway and continued up over the motorway towards the city.

I have just had the car resprayed after being stoned, we had a conference in our conference rooms today so had to give up our carparks for our guests, the friggen car was parked out on the road where all this iron was flying around :shit: Will check her out for damage in the morning light.

Took me 50 mins to get from bar Africa to the Oteha Valley Road on-ramp, a trip that normally takes between 7 and 10 mins. Glad to be home.

Very sad to hear of the deaths, hug your loved ones every chance you get, they could be gone anytime.

Yeah, could hardly believe my eyes. News now saying two people dead. Pretty awful.

Hope this doesn't fall under the "act of God" clause for insurance...

I hope it does  What that means is no-one is at fault for the damage, and they repair with no excess and no loss of no-claims bonus.

I know this as I have had a whirlwind (mini tornado if you will) pick up a love seat off a deck 2 stories up, move it up a metre and out from under the soffit of the house without damaging the house and then throw it onto my neighbours car which was innocently parked in their driveway, over 6 metres away :pinch:

@ MOM, Guess you would have been stuck in the traffic around Bush Road/Albany highway all that time? I live just off bush road and coming home all the roundabouts were clogged and traffic was generally only going towards the old albany highway.

I rode to uni today and was sitting on the 13th floor in class when it happened. Wasn't looking forward to the ride home. It actually was faster coming home today than my normal Tuesday night ride which really surprised me. Visibility was bad though so had to make sure I left a huge following distance between anything in front of me.
I swear it was windier Sunday arvo

No, that was trying to get down William Pickering to Rosedale etc...

Took over half an hour to go the length of W.P. Bush Road, Albany Highway was closed, so everything had to go the way I wanted to. Kind of sad I did not have my bike really. I am riding tomorrow, as I expect the traffic to be just as bad.

I work just up the road in Oteha Valley Rd and I was pretty shocked - we had the winds and heavy rain. I was told the tornado then went through Birkenhead (where I live), so I was paincky about getting home to check on my dog.
Weird thing is, that there was no traffic driving home at 5pm from Albany to Birkenhead - took me 15 minutes less than usual and I was prepared for bad traffic!

This thing touched down 100meters from my house in Glenfield, but not a single leaf was out of place.
These things are amazing the way they can wipe out one side of the street and not touch the other.

Bought a lotto ticket on the way home...

My house was fine, but I have a pink batt hanging from the guttering which is kinda weird  must have blown here from Birkenhead?
Couldn't see my roof in the dark, but surely I would know if I had tiles missing??? :shit:

Oh yeah, all the poo heads that said it would be funny if my dog was sucked up into the tornado - not funny!

That same area had a tornado strike many years ago and the old pioneer church was hit.

Partner was driving along and had a sheet of corrugated iron fly past her windscreen.:shit:
Particularly not amused and needs to get her looto ticket pronto!
