Finally got my arse into gear to work out where the short was that kept blowing fuses last time out at Mt Welly.
With my wealth of mechanical and electrical knowledge plus my superb deductive skills, I figured the plumes of smoke coming from the CDI probably wasn't a good thing.
So - I have a standard CDI to use, or are those 'race CDI's' for sale on trade me for +-$50 any good? I would have thought the ignition map needs to be specific to the bike but they seem to suggest these can be stuck on anything from 150 to 250cc.
Thoughts??
Cheers.
hey dont quote me on this,
But I do Believe from reading ona international site that those "race CDIs" just allow the engine to keep revving not giving you a rev limiter
And no rev limiter CDIs seem like a good way to trash either rods or valves from what I've seen if you don't keep a very close eye on the tacho.

The FXR CDI's run off 12volts from your charging system and battery. I think the after market CDI's are MAG CDI's and run off a winding in the stator, no battery needed, like a dirt bike. FXRs only have charge windings in there stator

You can run a standard cdi or ignitech cdi with no battery on an FXR. Not sure on the other ones. Rev limiter is your friend.

Yeah, but they run on 12v from the charge winding and regulator/recifier. Differnet system than a magneto CDI that has charge (that only get used if you want lights or other 12v systems) and ignition windings in the stator. They dont run a reg/rec as they dont run on 12 volts
I have fitted a small 12volt 1.2 amp gel battery in my Sons FXR, its only the size of 3 match boxs and takes the load off the reg/rec, does the same as fitting a capacitor. I made a wiring loom and have got a Tacho power feed and signil wire taped up for if I ever worry about fittin one

?
I dont run a battery, rectifier or capacitor. While I've never measured the voltage to the CDI from the stator its clearly AC as no rectifer is needed.

I am running stock cdi with no battery.
I personally wouldn't risk another cdi without a rev limiter, I need it to remind me to change gears.

Thanks for the input all.
Seems the best thing to do is stick with the standard CDI for now (and the safety of the rev limiter!).

I built my wiring using info off this wiring diagram that henk posted on the FXR150 site. I just fitted a small battery as well.
Wasn't going to risk AC volts into the CDI, It really hard to catch and get the smoke back in if it doesnt work

Are you running your CDI off one phase wire from the Stator?
I wouldnt want to try a ignitech without 12v, Ignitech smoke is more expensive. I must get the Ignitech system put on my 350LC at some stage
The last charging voltage from a Stator I checked was 75 to 80 ac between two phases at 5000rpm. That was on a GSX1100, not sure waht a FXR would be. Might check my sons and see
You have me worried now as I looked up the spec on the CDI and it states DC-DC converter.
I'm using that gutted wiring diagram I posted an age ago but have added three wires for power and signal to the dash with a 4700 uF cap so that I can use the standard dash with only tacho hooked up.

Kel.. did not knowthat you smoked...!...
You can always borrow my spare CDI when yours dies..... BUT.. if it dies..:girlfight:

OH and to add.. love my ignitch..
launch controll, programable advance, programable rev limiter, and quick shift... cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your CDI has a B marking on it its fine with AC/DC
B is for Bogan..........................:gob:
Bah!
Rev limits are for those with valves. Clearly this implies that valves are sucky poo.

Apex to you my friend.
