A further 28 helmets have been tested by the UK Government’s SHARP scheme, bringing the total tested up to 247. Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said "I would urge anyone thinking about buying a new helmet ahead of the weekend to check out the SHARP website before making their decision. A well fitted helmet with a high SHARP rating will provide you with the best possible protection in the event of an accident so it's well worth checking the advice on the site before you buy."

I'm a huge supporter of the SHARP rating, and believe the UK Government has gone a great job bringing this in.

I always consult the SHARP ratings when looking at new helmets. I wont consider any helmet unless it has a 4 or better rating.

Good fit is more important than anything as the first post says.

Girlfriend got a 3 star helmet. Doesn't have the best side impact protection apparently. Told her to land on her face if she crashed.

I wonder if that includes their 4 star system helmet with "quick release buckle" and a faceguard which fails to remain fully locked 60% of the time?

I think the SHARP rating is more inconsistent than a NZ politician!

Tell me which helmet, and I'll check.

If you are referring to flip helmets, you'll see they include a special test on the lock, and they note which helmets failed to remain locked shut.

Good fit is very important. Checlk out my BLOG on the issue:

However, assuming your are sensible to only buy helmets that are a good fit, why would you bother to only buy a 3 star helmet for road use?

I last bought a helmet about 6 months ago, 4 star rated. I think it cost me $130.

There wasn't a 5 star in the sub $200 price range that I could find stocked locally - otherwise I would have. :)
