View Full Version : Do I get a Tuono - Duc S4R - S3 or...

So, I wrote off my 07 S3(Speed Triple). It was mint and I had just finished getting it how I wanted. I am gutted.
I want to spend around $10k on a bike and want some objective opinion on the 02-04 Tuono and the 03-06 S4R. I know what the S3 was like, loved it but the closest I can get to my old one would cost me $15k and I dont want to spend that much.
My riding style? Weekend blats around the twisties, a couple of 2000km tours a year. I like the hooligan style naked bikes, dont want super sports riding position, or anything that is too run of the mill.
Not here to discuss the accident, suffice to say there are things I would do differently, however I wasnt riding like a hooligan and was totally within the law. As a matter of interest, I didnt claim ACC, the medical help was paid for by me and there mas no need for police or ambos.
You're probably aware but the Tuono is always highly ranked in the shootouts (usually just behind the s3). And the earlier ones are literally the Mille with MX bars and a goofy looking fairing. Later ones have a slightly detuned motor I beleive?
Find a tuono racing - has all the fruit (ohlins, brembo, marchesini's/OZ's).

Yeah, been looking for the racing but man they are hard to find. I would be happy with a low mileage black RSV but I cant even find black....

This would fit your budget (nice bike too if you got rid of that awful pack rack frame....)

Ive replied to your Pm Pete.
I have the ST4s with same motor as the S4r and you need to get the Tuono for better hooligan factor. As you know I just sold the triple so know where you are coming from.
The later Tuono's were not detuned as such but they had a more linear power delivery. Mate road my Tuono and came back describing it being like a motocross bike with a power band:shit:
Its Italian so does have its quirks ..included in the PM.
red Baron just sold a Factory for 10k. Only 5 Racings came into the country so good luck...................Oh yeah the Tuono will be cheaper for service compared to S4R. I should know:facepalm:

motor was excellent, 17700 kms.
Have a look at the pic, ground off the stator cover, filled it with gravel. Broke the magnets, smashed the flywheel/stator and dropped all the oil out as it slid down the road. My guess is that it ok, needs a clean, stator/flywheel, gasket etc and if using the computer, would need a reset. Belongs to the insurance company, Protecta now.

Good idea on the Tuono. A lot of bike for the cash. A bit odd looking but nothing a few mods won't fix.
Sad how much they devalue in a short term but brilliant for the next buyer! I don't see why they drop so much compared to the Ducatis.

Not sure what the details are, but can tell you it has factory carbon fairings, blue trick looking wheels, and Ohlins suspension. Price was $10k.

See what I mean - a shit load of bike for not much more than the price of a tidy SV1000!
Good buying :woohoo:
There's a guy on here "aff-man" with a nice RSVR - has all the fruit. And he's fixed all the "italian character" already :D
(sprag clutch, charging system etc).

My old man had an 05 Tuono & I loved it. I believe the earlier bikes were criticized for having a snatchy throttle response.
As already mentioned, it felt like a Super motard on steroids to me.
Absolutely loved my S4 and then S4Rs and with the BT016 tires fitted I recieved the odd comment after a run like...."Faaark that thing corners"
And I loved the torque rush...

Exactly why this was my short list, plus they all look kewl. Once I rode my S3 it was decision made . The Tuono was a VERY close second tho
