Good to get some visual history of a rider. Means your respect goes way up!!! I really want to get into some racing, need money for bike and track practice. Oh well... can stick with the road for now

Yep. Just like wire wheel Katana's in the day. We did it properly by the then ACU's rules, and built 10 of them. But you'd be fucking hard pressed to find a 'stock' NSR, RGV or TZR amongst the front runners there either mate! When you're riding a fast bike (and make no mistake, the KR1SP's we made were fucking fast 250's), you soon know who's cheating and who isn't!

It was fun being involved in road racing in those times! At the Auckland Street race circa 87/88? There were nearly 80 entrants in F2. We were split into two groups of 40. Unreal.

Good find!
There's LOTS of talk in the commentary about the lead bike being faster in a straight line. It didn't seem to have much more outright top speed, but it did punch out of the corners well. It had a noticeably deeper pitch than the RGV's, but then maybe the NSR's did anyway?
So whats the skinny? Is anyone prepared to comment all these years later?:corn:

I'm more than happy to comment, as I was actually there. Dave Coles bike was fast, but so were the bikes of Grant Rammage, Johnny Hepburn, Tony Sampson, Mike McCutcheon (sp?), Loren Poole's and later...Bruce Ainstey's. Mine was as fast as theirs but no faster. It had a trick CDI unit in it (the one Kawasaki NZ had imported for Simon Crafars KR1), and I ran it on AV gas and pre mix. Other than that...hand on heart...it was as we made all ten.
I'm sure there were other fast 'examples' in the field, but they were probably not getting ridden all that well so it didn't matter.

I agree. He was cheating no more than anyone back in the day. He just rode the thing really well. Dave Cole is much like Bruce Ainstey to race against. Mega mid corner speed, and smooth as.

Still it was good to relive the glory days - as an occasional ex 250 proddy racer myself (TZR, RGV and NSR - sorry Crasher - never got to try the Kwaka stroker...)

Either a 150 stroker or a 250 four stroke twin mate. Speak to Billy here, he's a GC that'll let you know what's the best option.

I wanted a set even before I went road racing. As soon as I saw Dave Aldana's set as a kid. They're looking pretty worse for wear now. I'm guessing they've been down the road well over 20 times. A tribute to Peter Gray's workmanship though. Best set I've ever owned. Pity he stopped making them.

That Tony Palmer was a fucking dick that either made stuff up as he went along or incorrectly repeated what he had heard others, that knew what they were talking about, had said.
His last name is totally appropriate.

You should have had Pav's leathers and you could have flown away from all the crashes . I bet every bone on the leathers has a break in them somewhere lol
As for the bikes im hurt by your comments:blink: , they were all proddy bikes and i can tell you the part numbers of the 300cc piston kits  to prove it :innocent: .

Here's the secret NSR setup, Change main jets from 128 to 124, back off oil pump cable, adjust power valve cables to open earlier. That let the engine rev to 12K without losing any midrange. Thats it. and of course a pair of The Chows yokohamas, (maybe 15 pairs).
From memory that race was broadcast live to air. My sponsor's were spewing the next day about Palmers comments. I think they even sought legal advice, to no avail.

Absolutely Dave,
Tony Palmer was legendary for putting his foot in his mouth,I notice he forgot too mention that Petes KR1SP was a model that was NZ specific and that Johnny,Grant and Slippery(Mike McCutcheon)were all on Suzuki NZ specials(wink wink, nudge nudge),Also I bought the Dave Cole NSR after he was done with it and I can assure everybody it was bog stock standard.

How times have changed when it comes to the safety of the starter/finisher and the marshalls....... standing so close to the edge of the track.

Nah...wasn't saying you were mate. I'm just reiterating how well Dave rode the thing. Major ingredient #1! I have no problem admiting my KR1 was running on good gas/premix and had a diff CDI unit in it. The CDI unit was more of a hindrance than a help, as it made it even peakier. Loren Poole will attest to that. And I ran premix after having two siezures related to dicky oil pumps and wasn't prepared to throw another crank at the thing.
But Dave Cole won those races because Dave Cole was riding better than everyone else there at that time. Fair and square!!!

But Dave Cole won those races because Dave Cole was riding better than everyone else there at that time. Fair and square!!! Agree. I've been beaten up by better riders punting bikes with half the power of the bike I was on. Doesn't matter how much power the bike has- the rider still has to have talent. He had to pick his way through a lot of lapped traffic without getting caught- that takes skill.
