XV750 starter clutch

Greetings,

A friend of mine has a 1982 XV750 (a Jap import TR1 lookalike with chain drive) which has starter clutch problems (surprise, surprise....)
The starter motor itself turns over fine but doesn't always engage. I've seen on the net that you can buy a new starter clutch Superclip which apparently makes them engage better. Is there anything available here in NZ for that?

Yamaha produced a modified worm drive for the throw-out pinion.

Trouble is, once the ring gear on the flywheel is rooted even the modification won't entirely fix the problem.

The ring gear and all of the associated gears are all in good condition, just sounds like a bucket of bolts when it turns over. Does start it eventually.

Might have to purchase one overseas on ebay.

And no Jim, that one has shaft drive...... ;)

We got the 920.

In fact as far as the chain drives go, we got the Euro spec 980 TR1...
The 750 in question is a Jap home market 750E which is more akin to the US market 920 chain drive and has the 750/920 starter mechanism.
traditionally to fix this provided the gear on the alternator is sound, we replaced the spring and the clip - sometimes the sliding gear too.
On later model 750's it is possible to use the TR1/1000 starter setup - provided there is a hole machined in the inner case to take the intermediate gear shaft.
This is in some of the US920's and 750's - I've never had the side off a 750E to see if this swap is posible on these. If it is, the later starter setup solves most of the problems.

I know we got the 920 here because I once followed, not 1, but 2 from Riversdale to Palmerston North. Both of them had vestigial silencers and they did not make a nice noise. Horribly loud and harsh.

His one sounds not too bad, has a 2:1 with a Supertrapp.

I have a 1985 registered XV750, with the E5E motor and I had serious connect problems with the bike starter and replaced all the cogs and kickback spring in the starter gear, they were readily available ex Aussy Yamaha, while still having a noisy starter (its a virago signature I think) it turns over ok. make sure the little clips on 2 of the appropriate cogs is there tho as I hear that causes problems if missing, and if replacing the cogs make sure you also replace the kickback spring as it loses its oomph and stops doing a efficient job.

I just imported in a new starter motor for mine, Yamaha here quoted me $1400-00 for one and I landed a brand new one from USA for NZ$218-00 (included air-post) from http://electricmotorserviceonline.com/ (and NZ companies wonder why people buy overseas)

I got a Haynes manual on the bike and its been invaluable and so easy to follow.
