I've been keeping an eye for one for sale on Trademe for a while now and none seem to be coming up! Are they quite rare on the NZ market?

They weren't officially imported to NZ because motorcycling is mostly a male pastime in NZ and most Kiwi males have very small penises and won't be seen dead on a "Girl's Bike" of 600cc or smaller, unless it's a dirt bike and a two stroke.
Ironically Honda imported the Hornet 900 here in large numbers and that was still perceived as a "Girl's Bike", or an "Old Man's" bike.

The 900s were only a couple grand more from new I think, and really only go like any other manufacturers 600 anyway. Fuckin great bikes though, loved doing stupid shit on mine.

Until recently, there was little incentive to have a smaller bike, and some would perceive the 600 to be too slow, not powerful enough etc. The hornet, while seen as an old man's bike (even my boss thought it was an old guy... riding his own hornet ) became very popular near the end of it's run, and continues to hold it's value quite well, being extremely reliable etc.
I think they're very thin on the ground full stop, and for me, that wouldn't be attractive, for finding parts etc. Sharry here, has one.
Personally, I think the CB900 is much better, but for smaller or lighter people, yes, the CB600 would appeal. Depending on your budget, the new one is out, and it's a really fun zippy ride, especially for a 600.

Your link doesn't work. Interesting there are so many more 900s. Anyone know the weight difference?

Thanks for the weights there. I went for a ride on a 900 at Botany Honda and it was a great bike. Certainly has the versatility I'm looking for. However I have some other big costs coming up in the near future so I decided to get a smaller cheaper bike to tide me over for now and sell it and upgrade to a Hornet in the future.

Still thinking about this. Many reviews I have read have rated the 600 higher than the 900 (not against each other however). Tough call.

The two classes have different levels of competition. I'm sure the 600 is a great bike, but for the same money you will get a 900, that does everything a little bit better.
No brainer in my book.

Not quite. The 600 isn't as boring to look at and costs less to run, insure, and register. That would be the no brainer in my book. The 600 won't be any slower A to B either.

Yeah definitely saw that one, I hear the post 2000 17" front wheels are much better though.
That is essentially the call, cheaper everything and lighter, vs that little bit extra power. Is it necessary?

Get the 900.
The 600 is pretty pointless - the 900 is physically about the same size, close to the same weight but has a whack of midrange grunt the 600 could only dream about. Plus it adds at least an inch to the length of you dick over the 600 when the office girl asks what you ride :woohoo:
Love my 900 - great basic platform to modify the bike to your desire ..... :innocent:
And I don't consider myself a old man yet!
What age is officially old around here?

Being slightly biased, being a Hornet owner - it seems like you are basing your choice on running costs so a 600 is the goer. As mentioned by Gremlin, 900 Hornets have a plethora of spares and yet, they are so reliable they rarely do need them.
They cover a lot of all areas in a bike, thus being the classic "Jack of all trades" - for most riders it seems to be underwhelming. For those who have owned or own them, they know exactly what sort of bike they are. They are under-rated, yet hold their price incredibly well in the 2nd hand market. The later models perversely keeps the older model prices well down and affordable for those entering the market for that classic big, reliable bike.
It was a bike built on a budget, Honda did such a great job putting it together it just sneaks in under the radar for most riders who discount them out of contention.
But, meh, what do I and the other Hornet riders know? :innocent:

250, 600, 900... End of the day its a HORNET! You buy one and you'll be the happiest prick around!
But let us not forget that the questions is why are there not so many on the market anymore... I dont have an answer to that but its probably because all the people that own them dont want to sell them because they love the shit out of them...?:woohoo:
