Queen's Birthday South Island ADV Ride - Info Post
All the details for the ride will be updated here so check back as more details come to hand...
The route
DAY 1 > Sat 4th: Meet at Maruia at 10:30. First run up Station Creek 4X4 track. Access permission has been sorted, it is $15 per rider. Return trip and maybe a look-see around Coal Creek 4X4 tracks etc. Then into Reefton to fuel up, food up, head to Big River Road. Look-see around winding Shed, Poppet Head with a couple of challenging hill climbs for those who dare to defy gravity. Stay at Big River Hut night #1 at a cost of $5.10 for DOC hut tickets, I'll pick these up and bring them along
Day #1 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $20
DAY 2 > Sun 5th: Return trip from Big River, include additional nearby track(s) (a few to choose from), then to Reefton to fuel up, food up. Head to Napoleons hill, JATZ has sorted access permission and is the standard $10 per rider. After that onto No Name rd (maybe something else if time allows). For accommodation on night #2 we have a 2 bedroom unit with 4 single beds and fold out divan booked at Ross Motels able to sleep up tp 6, tarrif is $100 for 2 people plus $15 extra person so we are looking at $29 each for the 5 confirmed so far
Day #2 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $39
DAY 3 > Mon 6th: Mt Greenland (maybe something else if time allows) then home…
Day #3 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $0

Re your post on froggies thread. Sorry J can't do. We are already in the middle of renovating another room and last weekend discovered our roof is leaking - wet gib and plaster damn it. I've got a fair bit of work to do around home at the moment. QBWE doesn't work for me either.

Just finished this article today on the Waitahu River Track (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/84/waitahu-track.php) which could be an addition to the route, plus the possibility of using the Montgomerie Hut (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/83/montgomerie-hut.php) at the end for accommodation for one of the nights.
In saying that, the Big River Hut is pretty awesome too so that could also be an option, plenty of options around that area thats for sure...

Hmmm...
Comfy armchair with big tank and knobs on or lightweight 3 legged wooden stool with a piddly tank?
Haven't taken the TT on a big ride yet...

Bugger, I'm out for QB weekend as well, rostered on to work all weekend, but on a positive note, the $$ will be handy for next trip.
I've been talking to a workmate ex Hokitika who has pointed out a couple of tracks to me, including the Mt Greenland track and another one up Pigeon hill (Falls Creek Rd).
Going by Google Earth images, Totara Valley Rd could be worth a look at too, and Mt Rangitoto track off Happy Valley Rd looks to be a nice snotty hill climb.

Thats a shame Kenny, I was hoping you'd be able to make this one, its been a while since we've both been out on the same ride. But at least you're getting the surgery over and done with, and hopefully once you're all healed up you'll cut back on the bloody whinging

We will be over there for the weekend, probably roughing it at the nurses hostel, Just deciding weather to take the DR650 or DT230 or both.
Would be happy to take you to the green hut that bro Andi mentioned, it is a nice easy ride on a trials bike
It is technical in places but ride-able

Gi'day mate
The 3 day route in post #1 is the first draft plan that JATZ put together to get the ball rolling early so the trip happens. No doubt all riders are happy for a fluid type weekend, there was the option of the looksee down the top Slab Hut Creek track on Sunday as we come out of Big River Hut, your option is in the immediate area so we could do the lower one to Green Hut with you boys as that also has the option of continuing out to SH7 for another new track addition... if you plan to start it from Big Rier Road that is?? I'm easy, will you boys be riding in that area on the Sunday?

I might come up yet, I could peel off from Greenland easy enough on the last day and head home so maybe I will do a midnight run up from Wonka to Reefton.
Like my bro I know the area very well from 4 wheelin and MTBing and can show some cool tracks that are a l m o s t good for ADV riding river dependent and time permitting, maybe not on this round but another.
Gotta choose now, Brass Monkey, Catlins, Tekapo, Reefton or Southland ... think I need 5 QB weekends preferably 5 days long.

Keen to bring my heavy old girl along for a play in the mud but need a new tyre, don't think the E07 will be quite knobbly 'nuff  and haven't broken that bit of news to 'er indoors yet so don't like my chances

When we came out of Station creek/Lake Daniells last time we went up the Coal Creek track hoping to meet up with the Rappahannock rd, but alas it doesn't, I would guestimate it stops about 1km short of joining and is thick brush in between.
The Coal creek track is actually a decent shingle road with fast flowing bends, worth a strope to the end and back
Now the $64,000 question, which rear tyre to use, knobs will probably be rooted by the time we tarmac it from chch to Mariua

Good to hear you go the time off mate :niceone:
Hard to answer that, never seen anyone get as few K's out of an E09, Shrek on his big GS seems to manage over 5k + so you must really be hard on the tarmac to get only 3k ish. Maybe a little gentler on the throttle till you get off road??
This goes without saying, but just in case, I had some serious sideways time running an E07 on the back in some seriously wet muddy boggy rutty tracks. A good tyre for dry dirt track/gravel/rock, but the most ridiculous tyre choice possible for wet slipery Coast conditions

Accommodation for night #2
Looks like there the closest cabins for day #3 start on Mt Greenland is in Hokatika (26.6 km from Ross).
There are only 3 cabins at 252 Beachside Holiday Park (http://www.252beachside.co.nz/cabins.html), at this stage if we get all 3 they should be able to put up all the riders that are coming so far. So, to anyone thinking of coming that hasn't piped up yet nows the time to confirm you are coming, I'll then aim to lock this in so we are not beaten by other holiday goers.
If you have any other ideas or recomendations on accommodation let me know
Either reply to this thread or PM me or JATZ to confirm you're in, cheers :)

There is the old church backpackers at Fergusons a little further down the road, great place but no fuel so tank up at Ross or Hoki, much nicer place than Hoki and somewhere a little different.

Hmmm tempting M/man
but I think Hoki would suit better IMHO, that way we could leave gear there and pic it up on the return.
I was thinking of the motel in Ross, but cabins sound o.k. too
And don't worry T.A. I just ordered a set of Kendas from Cycletreads :woohoo: Nordie will probly stil use his 705's and run about 5 psi with 2 rim locks

Reading the details on the rooms for the Ross motels, that could actually be a better option: "private ensuite bathroom, full kitchen facilities and are fully self contained". That sounds good to me and about the price, ish. I'll do some calling tomorrow and check it out, and go for the best option.
So for numbers, is this right?

OK finally sorted, we are staying in Reefton for the whole weekend at the Alfresco B&B which is opposite the camp.
I have a trip on Saturday to Alexander Mine in the truck.
If you guys are coming into Reefton on Sunday morning I could take you to the green hut, would take around one and a half to two hours tops return to Reefton, at that stage would let you guys carry on down the grey.
We'll see how we go aye. I've tee'd up Napoleons hill for mid morning on Sunday, but me an piglet and nordie will be coming back through Reefton on Monday if your still going to be there

That could work out well, we'll be coming out of Big River that morning and we'd be right there at the start point, that'd be a mint way to spend the morning  Will check what the go with everyone else is but that should leave plenty of time for Napoleons and to get to Ross that night. Yes as you come out of big river, Solders road goes up onto the top of the saddle, if we meet there it is only 5 minutes to the start line, that would give you bucket loads of time for Napoleons and Ross.

We have a basic route planned so there is a good flow to the trip and no wasted time planning where to go next, but this is definitely flexible, it'll all depend on what everyone is into. I was talking to mattsdakar yesterday, the Station creek run won't take all that long so the option of squeezing in the first part of the Waitahu River Track (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/84/waitahu-track.php) then up to the mine before we hit Big River is a possibility also, we'll just see how we go for time etc. Whatever the case I'll text you to let you know the plan and PM you my cell number so you can contact me

Everything all on track and looking good, Sundays weather looking better, Met service now says..."Mostly cloudy, some brief rain possible. Winds turning northwest." Better than the origional "Rain" predicted!!
It will be dry over there for the 4 days before the trip so we shouldn't have issues with any of the tracks, fingers crossed the weather slows up and keeps good weather over us all Monday too

Well that was an interesting weekend
Getting up to Lake Daniels was a mission, the river was up and running quite swiftly so the 20 odd crossings didn't exactly go without incident.
I managed to drown my bike twice, hence no photos from me as camera went swimming.
First time my legs weren't long enough and the second the front wheel fell victim to a submerged tree branch. Luckily as my XR has a decompression lever so you can pump the water out of the cylinder without having to remove spark plug...seat,tank etc etc
Josh also gave his DR a lengthy bath so the two hour return trip took us about 5hours!
By the time we fuelled up at Reefton it was just on dusk so basically rode all the way into Big River Hut in the dark which was pretty scary for me but even worse for Josh as his headlight bulb had blown so was just relying on following my lights
The next morning we awoke to find that the rivers had risen by over a metre and we spent two hours sitting around waiting for the water levels to drop. Eventually we got bored of waiting and basically floated the bikes across the swift flowing waters which were waist deep, so after de-drowning the five bikes we were off again...

Well I will put my part in, I shot into Big River on Saturday night because Josh forgot to TXT me, it was dark, raining and I had a ball, anyway it didnt rain just like Jatz said but it did piss down all night.
I was to meet the boys at 9am at the turn off, well 9am came and you guessed it (no one), so I decided to ride in and meet them, the pictures say the rest (Woodman wood be proud, 5 drowned bikes), what I rode through Saturday night about 200mm deep was now 700mm deep and fast flowing and bloody cold according to Mr Jatz.
Anyway three hours later we started our 9am ride back out of big river up to the Reefton saddle and down to the green hut to the river and back out again, mostly not a bad track, bit greasy and step in places but all good, thanks to the boys for helping me pick up the DR650 a couple of times (just showing them how to fall off)
After that we went back to Reefton via the ZigZag track for a coffee and hot pie, at that stage the boys had to gap it to Ross, I went and had a nice hot shower at the B&B.
I enjoyed the day and a great bunch of guys
Nice pics T.R. The road to the left of the Surf in your pic was a stream when we first arrived at the crossing.

What a great ride :headbang:
Was great to catch up with mattsdakar and JATZ again and finally meet NordiBoy and Piglet. As for TrailsRider, a huge thanks for your time showing us around your old stomping ground, we had a great time!! That mission into Big River in the dark to set a meet-up time was well beyond the call of duty, so too was waiting while we swam our bikes across the river and dried them out, you are a good man Paul :niceone:
Considering the forecast the weather was mint, couldn't have asked for better, thanks mother nature :innocent: There were a few interesting incidents that certainly made this adventure ride a real adventure
Station Creek is a great track, Slab Hut + detours were certainly challenging in sections, Totara Valley Road is a really nice scenic gravel stretch, the old rail track out of Ross was something different, and as for Mt Greenland, that I feel comfortable saying is a summer only track, the hard packed clay is as slippery as ice, in my boots I could hardly stand up, if I tried to walk I was on my arse. We made it up about half way to the end of the track where we could find traction off to the sides but when this ran out and there was nothing but steep faces of slippery clay rock, if we attempted it to climb them it was either going to be a broken bike or a broken us  We will be back in summer to conquer it
Lots of broken things to fix or replace including both a drowned camera and cell phone  but minor cons outweighed but the many pros. Here are some pics up till the point I killed my camera, this is day one, Station Creek, just NordieBoy, Matt and me while JATZ and Piglet had some mechanical issues and caught up with us at Big River ...

Bloody good stuff fellas. You've done the SIers proud - ya nutters. Do I count correctly - Matt Dakar drowned his bike 3 times in one weekend? Is that some kind of record?
Just a though for you re getting out of Big River - sticks through the wheels and a person on each end as they do when going up to Cape York. Only about 35-40kg each. Might have been hard work with current and stoney bed but something to consider.

Kinda glad I was stuck at home sanding but then again sounds like it was a bloody good challenge.

It's only officially drowned if you were riding it at the time.
Like it's not considered falling off if you don't leave your feet.
So that makes it only 2 drownings for Matt.
The sticks would have been useful but there's no straight sticks up there

Lots of broken things to fix or replace including both a drowned camera and cell phone  .
I have a brand new Phone for sale that will suit you to the ground (and underwater), bought it for Ellen as her old phone shit itself but she does not want it as we won't need two phones so it is brand new in the box unopened and for sale
I have been using them for three years now, Sonim Phone Xp3.2 Quest Pro http://www.sonimtech.com/products/xp3questpro.php
Waterproof, shock and dust proof, LED torch 8 week standby time and super strength in the signal just to name a few great features, an adv riders buddy.
Bro has a waterproof camera as well, worth while as well for our big trip away.
Anyway, if anyone is interested in buying the phone from me we can do a deal.

Yes when it comes to cameras I have two, Canon SX 1 IS, 10 meg, 20 optical zoom, fantastic camera BUT NOT good on the bike so I got a Panasonic DMC FT2, drop proof 2 metres, 14 megs, 5 optical zoom, 2.8" LCD screen, easy menu, water proof 10 metres (should do most bike trips), best of all no protruding front lens so nearly bullet proof, it is just the ticket for ADV riding and pretty good photos.
I hardly use my Canon now because the FT2 is so easy and it fits in your pock easy
There is a DMC FT1 but the zoom toggle is a pain to use specially with gloves on, the FT2 is much more user freindly,
Here is a link

I got mine in KTM orange so if I drop it in the grass or a deep puddle I have half a chance of finding it.

After where yo got to gets easier until 3/4 the way up......
...be warned you have not got to the very bouldery steep bits near the top, once on the top it is the gumble rally along the tops to where it drops off down the back side into Langdon creek.
Much easier in 4x4 with lockers :woohoo:

I like your "thats rideable" comment when watching Matts bike being pushed through the river, completely disregarding the fact that with a rider aboard the intake would be about 6 inches lower. Hmmmm wonder how hard it would be to route a snorkel up to my fairing? Or maybe some sort of flap that can be closed easily to block the air intake off?
Great effort guys.
