Never been myself but spent that same week last year travelling down and up the south island on my bike on my own. Just that week alone was an absolute buzz. and i promised myself that I would not miss it next year (had a wedding to go to in Wanaka). So.. am planning on making it there this year. It's given e a good goal for a first trip away back on two wheels (had a bit of an accident, not riding now til October).
From all i know who go, they love it. But it seems that the highlight of the week is getting there, and getting home again. i'll be heading down from Wellington. Simply can't wait!

Been to the last three so I can offer you a couple of tips.
Alcohol is expensive on the rally site, byo is a wise idea.
Compared to a lot of NZ alcohol is expensive in Invercargill, byo is a wise idea.
There is a small store on the road to the rally site that is possibly the cheapest place to by beer and wine if that is your preference and you don't want to bring your own.
You cant (without smuggling skills) take you own drinks, including coke, water e.t.c. from tent city into the food/retail/band area, the licensing trust that holds sway is anal and appears not to like bikers.
The Hammer hardware store in town is well worth a visit, there are static displays of historical bikes and equipment all over the place, and its free.
The toy run on Sunday is a great way to get from the rally site to Wyndham, and in support of a good cause.
Generally this rally is well organised almost to the point of being over organised, plenty to see and do, there is another rally you could attend on the way down if you want to spend the time, the Magpie Madness in Winchester is the weekend before and a total contrast to the Burt Munro, hosting event such as a wet jock and wet tee which I doubt will officially never be held at the Burt.
The wife and I are heading to this one again this year, doing the round trip of both islands to get there so we might see you on the way.

You might want to pack a cover for your bike as the sand gets everywhere ( at least minimise the mess! )

been to the last three........magic.......dont remember the booze being that expensive on rally site.......2.50 or 3 bucks for a can of speights.....5 bucks or so for a bourbon..........the food onsite was pretty average last year.......no spit roast guy like the last two years.......plenty of places to stay down there.........havent had to book a motel yet........usually spend a night or two onsite then head to a motel for the night before leaving to get cleaned up and have a good nights sleep..........hardware store well worth a visit as is the ride thru to bluff for the photo op........lookin forward to it again this year

Nah man on site by far fence/hedge across rugby ground.
Goin down again missed it the last few years. No one mentions Richardsons truck museum. Do they still open it for the bikers ? It's worth the visit, be bit disappointed if it's not.
