Hey all,

So, I've recently became a proud owner of a 1991 Honda VT250FN. But I'm also getting a CBR250RR which would need a LOT of TLC so the consumables are mainly for that.

Anyways my question is:

1. What shop web-site do you guys go to for your standard consumables: oil/air filters, oil, chain, sprockets, brake pads, oil etc etc? Cycletreads, Motomail, Repco/Supercheap?

2. Also, what brands do you recommend for all of the above parts? For chain/sprockets I'll be getting DID, but have no idea about the rest. And I don't mean to start an argument "my oil is better than yours", so if you could just say what you use and why (cheap/good/pretty ... whatever) that'd be really awesome.

3. Finally, I'm after a good set of stands (front/rear) maynly for the CBR. Is this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=376025985)any good?

Cheers :Punk:

Wemoto.com and eBay are my picks for my bikes, but, parts for my ZZR aren't readily available in NZ (Even though they were NZ new.....)
It all depends, it's cheaper to get decent brake pads and discs through eBay, chains are cheap enough in NZ.
I go to my local Honda shop for oil, they do me a good deal. Flters, go to TradeMe, you'll have the same filter as your VT250FN in the CBR, same as many TRX quads and all VT250/VTR250. It pays to get the oil filter I.D number and do a search, for example my Honda and Kawasaki run the same filter an HF303, which is very common and cheap.

Just shop around for the best prices and you'll be fine.

Anyways my question is:

1. What shop web-siteConsumables, I don't, just whatever physical shop is closest and gave me good service the last time.

2. Also, what brands do you recommend for all of the above parts?Doesn't really matter, I just avoid anything that is grossly under the price of everything else. As far as oil goes, it doesn't matter, it's all the same. Unless it's a two stroke.

3. Finally, I'm after a good set of stands (front/rear) maynly for the CBR. Is this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=376025985)any good?Yes they're fine. I have a friend with a few of that brand and he's rebuilt 2 CBR250s on them just fine.

Ive used for the last couple of years Econohonda....based in thames I think.
Good quick service & the fellas seem to be able to get hard to find bits especially for bikes that are grey imports.
If I remember correctly, thier web address is www.econohonda.co.nz or google 'em if its not.

Thanks guys !

imdying - concise and to the point awesome:niceone:

puddytat, ducatilover - great recommendations. wemoto looks very good.

Also found http://www.motorcycle-road-and-race.co.uk/ - similar to wemoto, a little smaller range, but are a bit cheaper too.

If anyone has any other suggestions - keep them coming!

Yep for sure,I just replaced chain and sprockets, got a good deal on chain, and had bought 2 months previous, but prices for sprockets was amazing, sussed out both front and rear from franchise outlets within 200km of each other,$70 set and $110 set, assuming from same supplier(as both had delay at time on rear, front in stock),also my outlet used has oil filters same make as supercheap $2 cheaper,or original oem for $1 cheaper,ok not much but as I work over the road is easier to get from bike dealer, than down road, although supercheap gets business if doing on weekend for mates.
Getting a good relationship takes time and trust on both sides, new tyres were fitted at another $10 off for being cheeky and asking, and at good prices, even cheaper per tyre than cycletreads for example.

I do 3,500 km oil changes, then put the bike into the dealer for the 10,000 km service.

I bought a carton on 12 Total Hi-Perf "synthetic based" 4T SAE 10W-40 motor oil for $100 + GST at the local Total agent, and I get the genuine oil filter changed at the 10,000 km service (it's on $25).

Check around, be prepared to buy in bulk, eg. a carton of oil or a pack of filters.

The Mrs gets my all my lube and fluids straight from the rep I just give here a list of whats needed

as for filters all the oil filter are Hi-flow proberly one of the better and more off the shelf brands you will see, airfilters are either pipercross or Hi-flow

Bike stands are handy but not something I would use for long periods of time,If you haver a smally trolly fack and some axle stands and blocks of wood you can secure your bike rather well also dont be afraid to use a 10foot rachet tyedown to secure ypur bike to an over head rather/bean if you have one make up a 3 foot length of rope and splice an eye in each end its great for stickeing around the head stock when lefting the from of the bike....

If you have time and space fined a couple of F&P washing machines rip the gut;s out of them lay them endtoo end bolt them together and place 2x1800mmkx25mm planks and a 2"stopping block at one end you already have a wok bench suitable enough to work on your bike if the missis complains tell her she can have the old washing machings for scrape when your finished :innocent:

Because I worked for 25 years for one of the international oil companies, the last 9 in their international lubes technical centre. Yeah, thats an oil change about every 3 months.

What is the least expensive maintenance component you'll use in your bike? The engine oil.

I saw a paper from Cummins which showed a direct corelation between oil drain interval and engine life to overhaul, longer the oil drain period the shorter the time to overhaul. OK, a 250 mobike engine is a bit smaller than a 13 litre turbo diesel engine, but the principle is the same.

And I've just done 17,500 km over the last 14 months since I got my learners license, did 450 km this weekend (went to Auckland and back). So I've done four oil changes myself, and had the shop service her twice, once when I bought her and once after I'd done 10,000 km.
