Can someone explain to me why you would bid $4450 in an auction when the last bid was only $3040??
I know you can see the bidding history when you check out the listing so...umm...why would you throw a bid in for $1400 more than the last bid?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=375688468

I note the reserve is at $3500.

can happen when someone bids more than someone elses auto bid

less charitable view is a mate has made a bid to top dollar in the hope that someone will top it

I wonder if the winner thought the reserve was going to be $4500

I may be cynical, but that's what i was thinking.
If you put an auto bid in it goes straight to the reserve then starts to climb after that. The reserve was $3500. So i am still a bit confused!

Could be an option. Bit risky i thought. Especially when i'm not too sure if the bike was worth anything close to that.
It still had some damage and re vinning to do.

tiget tim will be right someone has put a auto bid on of $4445 and the winning bidder probably bid a auto bit of say $4500, it would jump the auction to just above the first autobid

Would it not show the first auto bid of $4445 also though.
The last bid was placed at 12.59pm (right on the closing time) and the last one before it was 1 day previous at 10.22 am. Nothing in between at all. Surely if there was an auto bid of any kind, it would have shown up.

I guess it's not worth worrying about now and you can be sure the seller is a very happy person

Well spotted.

Doesn't explain the "why would ya" though!
THe best option being just go with the bidding so as to purchase at cheapest possible.
Hmmm.

Buyer obviously wanted it and "Buy Now" ensures that.

I know someone who buys damaged Triumphs to repair, but now struggles because they fetch way more than they're worth.

Maybe the buyer really wants the bike.
I sold my 98' Thundercat for $8K to a person who really wanted it.
The auction ended with the highest bid of $6.9K...
The reserve was $7K...the bloke from up North had offered the eight grand before the auction ended and stood buy his offer so he got the bike.

Could well be the case. I guess i'm just a miserable bastard who doesn't like paying for anything.

You are correct, but I didn't actually open the link to see the trade, I just answered the OP's question as to what might have happened :) Good on you for sorting it out!

I guess you're not too sharp on the finer points of irony and humour.

WTF was your missus doing giving random strangers hugs in pubs on Saturday night by the way? Spewing I wasn't there now..... Might have got a touch or summit.

What a turd.
I have brought and sold a few triumphs in my day and i can tell you that $4500 is way too much to get that thing on the road again and still be of reasonable value.
I know what it costs to repair fairings etc and that's only a small amount of what needed doing to it.
I don't cry too much when i see someone pay lard arse amounts for a bike that i thought i might grab. Plenty more round the corner.
This thread was because i couldn't understand why anyone would want to jump in way over the previous bid just to buy a bike, not because i didn't get it it, or maybe you didn't see that bit.
Jeez, i used to think you were a decent sort.

Hmmm.

Once an auction reaches reserve the buy Now option is no longer available and if a bidding war ensues whos to say what things can go for. Buy Now can sometimes be the cheaper option even if it is miles away from the current bid.
Espsecially if someone(s) really really wants it

Yea good point.
The bike had been up for the third time so would doubt it was ever going to be very high in price.
I would have sat and waited somewhat before firing a shot.
It definitely wasn't a bargain by any means.
