So, for a long time I thought quads would just not be able to be ridden by joebloggs on the road legally in NZ
This is wrong O_O! probably news to all of you aswell
it is entirely doable and is being done every now and again
add indicators, lights, mirrors, brakelights, numberplate light
change tyres and make sure brakelines are rated lines
bobs ya uncle !
so why arent there quads zooming around on the road in NZ ?
obviously something thats not advertised and you cant just grab something and go
but imagine an uber support adventure quad setup for hunting and fishing etc,
O_O
Quads are expensive thou,
Thoughts???

He's already got that one ready and waiting - the first man in history to do the DB1K in 24 hours on a 50cc :woohoo:
Makes my three day and still not finished on the KLR this year look kinda pathetic

to be honest, i have my concerns already :P needs a bit of pepping up i think, hills are 1st gear affairs, brilliantly light thou, fly down hill etc brake late, good pace through tracks, but hills are a bastard
also need to plumb up a 2nd tank :|

I like the idea of that, I like it a lot. Amazingly there just doesn't seem to be that many people dong that sore of thing, maybe due to such cheap 4X4's available in NZ? When I was researhing ideas for mounting a rifle rack to my bike I was blown away with small numbers of people doing this type of setup, even world wide. I love packing up and heading off on the bike for a hunt, its fricken awesome, can't understand why to date I have not seen even 1 other bike setup for hunting
Maybe the increasing fuel prices will change this in the near future...
Here is my setup here : Motorbike Rifle Rack (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/34/motorbike-rifle-rack.php)

Think quite a few people hunt / fish with them but they trailer them to where they are going

I think there must be more to it than putting on lites. Are you sure that's all you need to do? Seatbelts? guards covering the entire width of the tyre?
I dunno,it seems to me if it were that easy the main manufacturers wouldn't miss out on a huge market of road going ATVs.
Edit: Just found this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/archive/index.php/t-6724.html)- bottom post and this (http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/403817/?s=)

Assuming it was geared up enough, can you imagine riding one around corners on the open road at even average traffic speeds? It would be exhausting; a constant battle to not fall off, followed by rolling over and dying.

We'd be alright up here in Nelson cos we never fall off:yes:
Cornering would be interesting

Quads are awesome for taking heaps of gear to some out of the way bush camps and dragging firewood back to camp.Dont think i would like one on the road for any distance at all though.

Quads are awesome for quietly trundling up places you'd never get up on bike. When caving we use farm quads now and again, usually we keep piling on bods and packs 'till the logistics gets a bit much, and then off we go! We're usually in horribly steep, slippery terrain.
But nah, wouldn't want to ride one on the road for any real distance, and bikes are way faster in less challenging terrain.

I bumped into a group of British bikers in Normandy a few years ago, one of whom was handicapped from a bad off. He was touring on a GSX-R 1000 powered quad & I'm sure it had nitrous too.
Their were quite a few more run of the mill quads on the road in the UK too. One prick spoiled my Sunday lunch by wheelying past the pub all afternoon, yoshi pipe at full howl.

GSX-R-powered Smart (or was it Hayabusa?) turbo'd with 600ps on tap - that'd be worthwhile. Not an adventure machine though.
