View Full Version : Need a new lid but on a budget?

Bit of advise here my lovelies.
I need a new lid but can only stretch to $300 at the moment. I know that's not a lot for this piece of vital kit but that's the way it is.
Any advice on what is out there and what to look for? I'm after a bog standard type full face lid, nothing to spacy but it has to be a decent quality with linings that will last longer than the present one of mine.
Any and all greatfully received as always

I learnt about them SHARPs ratings on this site (new gear - sticky), then I saw Cycletreads had 5 star Shark helmets on special from 349 down to 199 dollars.
Well rated helmets.
A week or so ago someone had a virtually unused, mint nick, XR1000 Shoei for $200, was a size Large tho....or id have bought it asap.
Keep your eyes open for the specials - hopefully you can afford to be patient and wait for that bargain helmet to pop up?

Yeah, I am in no major rush mate but just nice to know what are deemed decent lids for the money, not too up on that you see.
Thanks for that info, appreciated

Cycletreads up in Takapuna are always good for gear at great prices, my Oxford helmet only set me back about $100 from them. Best to try on heaps of different helmets though, find the one that fits your head's 'shape' best - or else you'll get mean headaches after only a short ride...
TOTO will see ya right Mark, just out of interest what size is you head? (the one on your shoulders:facepalm:)
We have a brand new KBC lady Killer helmet here, beautiful helmet, worn once or twice by Anne.

I'm sure there is a 5 star Shark helmet, just not for that price from Cycletreads ;)
Here are the Shark helmets that are rated on the SHARP website:

I'm tempted to get one now, my current helmet is from that Cnell shop, isn't even SHARP rated.
$199 for S650 helmet and $109 for a dark visor. :gob:
Would it be worth getting a dark visor? At the moment I just wear sunnies if it gets too bright.

Yes a Dark visor is an essential as far as I'm concerned, far more comfy for longer rides than wearing sunnies under your helmet.

You can pick up an arf decent helmet like a basic HJC for $150ish. Just a bit heavier than the more expensive options in order to make a decent shell from less expensive materials.

Yup, my missus has that helmet - but black and white, with brown checkered squares at the back. Not bad looking - decent visor. D ring buckle system was a first for her. And yeah - I tried it on at speed - its quite noisy.
I landed a AGV Stealth off ebay a couple of years ago for around $270 IIRC - 5 star safety

I found AGV helmets simply don't fit my noggin - completely the wrong shape. I just landed a Suomy Vandal via ebay and it's great, it seems so much lighter & less buffeting compared to the Shark it's replaced. It too is noisy and I can see me starting to use an earplug when riding.

Noisy is nothing a pair of decent ear plugs (or earphones, just be careful listening to rock and metal - tends to up the pace a bit:innocent:) won't fix.
The internal sun visor saves the headaches sunglasses cause on longer trips but you're never caught out after dark with only a tinted visor either :sunny:

Yeah, Ive seen a few posts lately where people comment about sunglasses being annoying or etc. I dont get it....always worn sunnies - but yeah some types fit a helmet better than others. But having a tinted visor and riding on open roads at night - no thanks!

I skimmed read some of the replies there was mention of cheapish HJC for $150ish,
I have one of these currently, the most I have spent on a helmet to tell the truth, I had some cheap junk before that then I got a cheap Oxford $80 helmet, The HJC one is pretty good, comes with a fog free visor, it does start to wear out after 4-5 months but I think its a good coating of cat crap, its quietish but like I said im just comparing with cheaper helmets, if your looking for an in-between I recommend one.
I also had a 1tonne duel visor helmet, was pretty good but loud, I found the visor through my depth perception out a little bit.
Find the best fit/built helmet and don't look at the price, once you know whats the best fit and build then go looking for the best deal you can get. I bought an $800 Shark for $350 on sale and it was miles better than the budget lids, If you look around you are bound to find a good deal without going to a cheap lid.
I just crashed on Friday wearing my Shoei XSpirit and my heads the only thing not damaged, the Doc said I was lucky I was wear such a good lid as it took a pretty good hit, don't scrimp on your lid as you any get one head.
Yeah. For sure. Then everyone thinks you're a mean-arse motherfucker of a biker instead of a little old grampa man like me...:innocent:

I reckon the HJC are hard to beat for $$. Pretty good liners in their current range and generally fit fat heads well. Shops that play ball and normally do some good deals on them as well. My first lid was a HJC (M) now I have a Shoei 1100 (L). Love the sizing difference :)

LASIK. Never once regretted it.
I love me a tinted visor - with the black Shoei.
I especially love coming up to a car blocking the bus lane during rush hour - parking the bike 30cm from their drivers door and just looking at them.... Big black bike with a noise that'll wake the dead, black gear, black lid and black visor on a large gentleman seems to give people the shits.
Fortunately, they can't see the fact that I'm grinning like a buffoon about them shitting themselves.

I'm not allowed LASIK yet, eye sight is still changing too much.
My eyes are light sensitive enough that I'm still considering a tinted visor to go with the internal sun visor.

I also have a Givi helmet, but it's a flip-up one (Xmodular).
I paid $399 for it, and have since discovered it bears a striking resemblance to a Zeus 3000, which I've seen on Trademe for $260, and which get's a pretty good review on Webbikeworld.
I can't say for sure if the two helmets are more or less the same, not having seen the Zeus one close up...but the photos in the review show a lot of identical details, plus there's a "made in taiwan" label on the Givi's removable lining (which is where Zeus is based).

I have a cheap HJC & I wont be getting one again, am hating it more an more for bad ventilation, noise, shake & general crappyness in the build quality. Only a matter of time before the padding compacts enough so I can say its unsafe an get another helmet, is slowly getting looser.
Next time will find one that fits then try to justify the money (I think someone said that already?)

You can get tinted contacts if you wear hard contacts like I do, they are great for evening or morning riding as they tint just enough to take the glare off but not nough that you dont need a pair of sunnies to go with them on a bright day. They change colour quickly enough to get you through that Dusk/Dawn bit when too dark for sunnies but too light not to wear them :argh:

I currently have a HJC CL Max XXXL Modular (flip up the face) lid and want to start the search for a new model before this one gets to the too loose for safety stage. I would happily have another CL Max but they dont make them anymore. I have a tall and long (front to back) noggin which will not allow the use of a fixed full face so modular is the go and like FM I will be limited in budget.
Any suggestions from others out there that got told they had a face the shape of a horse!! when looking for a helmet.:nya:
BTW I find my HJC is great from a noise perspective when not behind a screen that is too short but have to wear plugs on the GTR cause the screen is made for short peoples.:(

I did say shaped like a Horse not looks like a horse.
I believe it is because I have a prominant honker and a tall oval head, I have had to compress the forehead and the rear polystyrene insert in the HJC to stop the headaches (and this is the the biggest helmet I could find!! apart from a ~$700 Shoei that fit but was right ass to get on).
The first helmet I had for road use was a Kiwi in the early 90's, that was a nice fit for me back then even though my hair was more abundant it still fit really well, pity it had a little incident. Anyone know if they still make Kiwi helmets anywhere?

Try the Givi Uk website www.givi.co.uk.
My observations on the Givi Xmodular - the lining is nice material, but the padding is thin. Took me a while to figure out how to remove the visor due to the amount of force required. The chin guard on mine doesn't click into place all that positively (and makes a flimsy-sounding "boing" noise when it does) but once in place it feels very solid. No surface scratches on the exterior of the shell even after 6 months, but maybe I'm just being more careful these days.
