View Full Version : Biker down (this time it's me!)

First big crash, about two hours ago, a SMIDSY pulled out in front of me while I was hopping home at fifty kph, hit the front and side of his car, landed on my ass and elbow and rolled some, lay on the road thinking what the fuck. Lots of people to help, ambos and police there in minutes. Bike written off, whole front of it disintegrated, forks at very odd angles. Bits missing all over. Was heart breaking to see her driving off on the back of the tow truck. :bye:
Checked over by the ambos, nothing evidently wrong, just a sprained thumb, bruised ass. I'm bloody thankful for my gear or else I'm sure I'd have a shattered elbow and a lot less skin. The police took statements, the guy admitted fault. I felt bad for him, he was in a right state, had to give him a hug to calm him down. He's fully insured, I'm fully insured, all is alright.
Off to the docs tomorrow to get another check out and some painkillers (on ACC of course). Back to busses until insurance pays out and I can pick up something new.

First big accident, not one I'd like to repeat. Moral of the story, ATGATT.

You hugged a guy who SMIDSY'd you?! Fuck, don't know if I could ever do that. Though obviously he was really remorseful about it, good that you're allright! Be glad the bike is written off, dodgy repairs are the last thing you want to worry about after having a crash, better to get on something that hasn't been in a wreck before. Even if you have to see your baby go bye bye.

 At least you are ok and walking, sorry about the bike.

And well done for your reaction mate, the guy might have caused the accident that hurt you, but sometimes people really do feel remorse and you probably helped the driver out more than you know :clap:. Most people don't mean it when they try to kill us.

Cheers mate. He needed some reassurance as well, nobodies perfect and nobody likes to be shat on when they get shocked into realising it. He was a nice enough bloke.

Good to hear your all good man, sounds like you were pretty controlled about the whole thing, I think I would get pretty angry (depending on the attitude of the other driver i think) if that happend and the other guy was a dick. ..

:niceone: for your attitude.
:crybaby: about the crash and losing your bike. Now you get all the enjoyment of shopping for a replacement
 Lights on full? I hope that was a flippant remark. I have noticed lights on full just hides you and confuses people as to where you really are. There was even a bike coming towards me that his lights on full made him appear to be the 4wd that was behind him, i.e. making it appear there was a gap in the traffic :shit: lucky I wasn't in a rush or distracted and looked again.

Glad to hear you have survived it and congratulations on your very decent response to the driver's distress. I'm impressed by that.

Assuming that it's not an experience that you'd want to repeat, what would you do differently next time you were approaching the same or a similar junction?

I'll try to offer a constructive example. If I can see someone waiting to turn out of a side road, I usually do a 'please notice me' swerve out of line and back again so as to make my headlight "pop out" in their line of vision. I also cover the front brake and think about my road position i.e. am I visible from the driver's perspective? Am I in the best position to evade impact if necessary? And then assume that I may be about to test my braking or evasion skills.

If the scenario is an oncoming vehicle waiting to turn right across in front of my path into a side road (or for any vehicle that is giving off "I'm in a hurry" signs like wheels edging forward, driver looking stressed out, etc.) it's all of the above plus ease off & probably drop a gear. In daylight I may even stand up on the pegs (for helmet "pop out", provided there is time to do it and sit down again well before any braking may be required.

Now one day I may do my little dance and still get SMIDSY'd to smithereens. Meanwhile I am trying hard to avoid it.

And you may have done all of this and more. If not, it may be worth thinking about. HTH.

Cheers for the response, I appreciate the feedback.
As the other driver told me, he was wondering what the guy in the Holden ahead of me was doing, in regards to the side road, and was focussed on him. When the Holden gave way he just assumed all was clear without checking the other lane, which I was in. He was preoccupied with the bigger issue on the road I guess.
To clarify, it was a four-laned main road, with a median strip in the middle. Car was waiting on the median to turn into the side street that the Holden was heading into also.
I fully expected him to give way, but as he said, he just didn't see me.
As I said to him, these things happen, they're called accidents for a reason, and he won't make that same mistake again (hopefully)

Apologies in advance but there is something really wrong with what you just said. It is not guttering at all. There is no guttering. There is a gutter, either along the edges of your roof, or the side of the road, and then there is gutted. The word you want to use here is GUTTED!

Personal, pet hate word of mine.

To the OP, sorry to hear of your bin. Glad you are not too badly banged up, bikes are replaceable. For the future try to find somewhere else to go if something happens like this again. Always have a plan B in mind, be scanning for an escape route at all times.

Ah, sounds like you were a statistic supporting the change to the left turn rule.

So if I read it right, you were in the right hand lane and the vehicle in the left hand lane (correctly) gave way to the oncoming, right turning car. That is similar to the second example I used and the presence of the yielding Holden to my left in that scenario would set off very loud "I bet he pulls across me" alarm bells ringing in my head.

Harder to anticipate if you could not see the Holden indicating left, of course (e.g. if you were right alongside, although perhaps you noticed him slowing to turn..?) , so the devil is in the details.

Cheers

Chasio

PS Definitely not guttering :)

Pretty much spot on. I guess I was a little bit guilty of the home-free-attitude, only being about 1km from home, probably not as sharp as I should have been. But, lesson learnt, constant vigilance. I'm just glad I walked away from it without any major injury.

Something I learned a long time ago, and it's still relevant - watch the wheels of the other vehicle. You'll see the wheels turning as soon as the vehicle moves, whereas when looking at the vehicle itself, it is not always obvious it's moving.
Not sure of the technical explanation of why this is so, possibly the contrast between the moving wheel and the non-moving (unless you are in Christchurch) road.

The other life-saving tip is to beware of car drivers wearing hats. (either old duffers coming home from bowls or young boi-racers with backwards caps)

Had a good result from the insurance company so far. They had the bike by monday and the claim was lodged, they called me today to say that they'll pay out $1800, which I'm fairly happy with, considering the bike was originally only insured for $1700. So depending on how quickly they pay out, I'll be back on two wheels soon enough! Already eyeing up new babies, something with more cylinders this time methinks..
