Bet they bitched about boy racers so the council does something to help and now they bitch about that.
Pretty sure if you don't wear hoodies, baseball caps and have the seat reclined back as far as possible when driving your going to be safe.

I reckon it's just the perceived lack of consultation that's got their adult-diapers in a twist. New Zealanders in general don't seem particularly keen on change, so you've got to take it slowly, give lots of notice and let them have a say. In two months time, try and take those signs down and they'll be chaining themselves to the posts singing "we shall overcome".
I think it's symptomatic of a general feeling that we no longer have any control over our local environs. In a large part it seems pretty much true too. (bah mumble grumble wellywood).

This is a typical non story.
Egmont Rd resident David Sampson said residents understood they were exempt from the ban but it had taken a call to the council to confirm it and they feared that exemption could disappear depending on who policed the bylaw.
So residents knew the story. Rang council to confirm it that was the case. Were reassured it was .
Continued to moan anyway until they get a reporter to fill his local rag with something to stop the advertising banging into itself.
Ewwwwwww, says the editor - Boy racer stories are sexy. No time to read it, just print. Tomorrow it will be chip paper anyway.
Except fuckwit Campbell or Walrus will pick it up and it will be whah whah whah
There is no story here. Move along

As I read that story, the police are going to have to decide who is and who is not infringing the law - in other words they are expected to interpret the law.
Bad move in my opinion. Police are there to administer, not interpret the law. Interpretation is the job of the judiciary.
The way it stands, IF the story is accurate, there is room for abuse.

You prefer not to be given a warning sometimes?

No  the residence didn't know the story, had to ring the council to find out the story and were pissed off because they weren't told what was happening if they had been they could have suggested the signs be moved a meer 400m to avoid any issues. Even though the residence are 'exempt' (yeah how does that work when the cop has pulled you over already?) they are also worried about their visitors being pinged. You do understand that some people do get visitors and have people that actually like them and that they don't all drive SUVs? Do you want them to wait until the cops ping a visitor and then they moan?

I just don't think they should have to interpret ambiguous legislation. The legislation should be clear in itself. Just my own opinion.

I think the biggest problem is the people complaining, they're out there screaming "boy racers are bad" yet expect to be able to use the roads themselves, but I don't remember the last time I saw a article about a "boy racer" doing shit like this
"An Auckland dairy owner was pinned against the wall when an elderly woman drove right in this afternoon."
Seems a common occurrence for the older folk tho, wonder how these people would feel if the rest of us banned them from using the roads between 0600-0000???

"An Auckland dairy owner was pinned against the wall when an elderly woman drove right in this afternoon."
We had one try to back out of the angle parking space in front of the dairy. Sadly, she selected D instead of R...
Car leapt across the footpath, demolished the fruit stand beside the dairy door and came to rest just inside the shop.
Poor old lady nearly died of shock...let alone the dairy owner...

NO MORE BOY RACER PROBLEM ...  :blink:Wrong! After the September quake a section of my street was gravel for a while, along with 30kph signs, so the dickheads would delight in fishtailing through that bit. The munted roads were flattened out reasonably quickly after September, so the retards didn't stay away for long. One of the few benefits of the Feb quake is that the roads are so much more rooted over this side of town that the neanderthals in their lowered shit boxes are still staying away for fear of ripping shit off their toys. I don't know what's happened to them? They're all over the flash side of town bothering someone else I guess?
So I guess speed bumps are the answer.

The natural traffic calming measures in chch are the best anti boy racer features yet, and the council didn't even have to pay or get permission. Win.
We've got similar anti boy racer signs on the road to where we live, I have yet to be pulled up on my way in or out, my son has never been bothered or any of our visitors. So I guess police discretion must be working out our way, perhaps them cops up norf are a bit different and that's what the locals are twitchy about.

100% agree. They don't have law degrees and can't be expected to know all the ins and outs of every piece of legislation either.
Seems like the signs cost a shitload, and don't do the job... how unusual  They need a few like Te Irirangi Drive in Auckland, that clearly states vehicles are banned in certain times and weights, unless on legitimate business. Easy.

No one has mentioned how big business interests in these industrial areas make deals with council and cops, behind closed doors that ordinary citizens who actually have to live there have little or no say.
Inclusion in discussion rather than railroading seems to be the issue.
Personally if the cops had more teeth regarding boy racers, these silly signs and boy racers for that matter would be redundant.

I wonder if the upkeep of that section of road will now go to a user pays model, since members of the public are now prevented from using a public road.
Put a toll gate on the bastard and no boy racers would go near it. Then watch the businesses and locals scream their tits off.
More erosion of rights of the individual. There are plenty enough basic laws in this country to enforce anti-social activity in that area without this additional by-law.
Provided a boy-racer is driving a roadworthy, legal vehicle in a safe, legal, responsible manner, then what is the problem?
When they start driving recklessly/dangerously then there are plenty of laws extant.
I wonder what next 'source of social turmoil' will be due for the great NZ Lebensunwertes Leben

Until one day the discretion goes against you. Then you don't have a leg to stand on. The point they were making isn't about stopping boy racers, it's about interpretation of law.
You sit back and say "well it doesn't affect me, I'm fine" for one thing. Then another. Then another. The precedent is set - creep in one little bit of citizen control at a time. One day they won't let you ride your motorbike without paying a $500/year rego just because it's over 600cc. Oh wait, they've already done that.

The police seem to work out how much discretion they have by prosecuting a 'test case'.

Somebody decided there wasn't enough of them, and didn't like the way the judiciary were interpreting them, so as in the case of the OP they started to go for quantity over quality.
Very few of our modern social ills are actually new, and I'm yet to be convinced that any law or by-law passed in the last 10 years addresses any issue that couldn't have been handled by laws in existence before that, with just a little bit of common sense from the judiciary (who am I kidding?). Including laws drafted with respect to new technologies. The original laws were mostly very well drafted, and small amendments to add/expand definitions would have sufficed.
