Left wing (Greens etc) don't want us burning up petrol so we should be quietly disposed of.
Right Wing (Act etc) see us as rebels and nonconfirmists so we should be quietly disposed of.
Center Wing??! (Labour, National) see us as easy prey for taxes, or prime customers for the private insurance companies that takeover ACC.

Ho Hum, Resurrect McGillicuddy perhaps?

None of them. Political parties care about votes. Somehow we failed to turn the biggest political demonstration in NZ history into an issue about votes.

It's turned into "How can we appease the NZ public and Politicians so we can be allowed to still ride our motorbikes, even if it means chopper flags and training wheels?"

Presumably that has been the basis of your correspondence to your local MP, Mr Key and his bunch of evil minions, and the basis of you organising the resistance in your area?

No?

Motorcycling is such a small part of my life it barely rates a mention as to what's important for me in a government.

Sure ACC has taken an extra $250 a year from me - but I can tell you now that's fuck all compared to what a bad government could take.

While bikes are important to me, my hoby, love my bikes....I like the idea that we can afford to educate and provide some basic healthcare to my kids, more so.

Biker issues wont be in the mix for me, come election day.

No political party is going to suck up to motorcyclists. Why should they? There are few votes to be gained or real issues worth losing sleep about.

And, in return, what are bikers going to do for a political party that pandered to them, other than whinge and moan.

Bikers are incapable of supporting the political channels they currently have. BRONZ comes and goes like Jehovah's Witnesses on a Saturday. People get pissed off with it and set up an alternative that comes and goes like the Mormons on a Saturday. Democracy is a fickle thing that presumes people are capable of exercising free will and making reasoned choices.

I understand why it would have been part of their charter and is totally in line with what McGillicuddy were but it does leave NZ voters without a protest vote option. It is a pity that the other parties didn't take notice and clean up their acts instead of McGillicuddy having to disband. Perhaps, politicians being as thick as they are, it would have required McGillicuddy to actually occupy seats in parliament and make it ineffective.
I don't think they would have been good for motorcyclists however with their great leap backwards policy and the return to horse and cart.

politicians being as thick as they are,

I have to disagree. Where else can you get a job where you do sweet fuck all and get paid shitloads of money, free travel and all the other perks that they get. I would suggest they are extremely smart.

rustyrobot
31st May 2011, 09:24
Not only do they get all those perks - their job interview process pretty much consists of them lying to as many people as possible, and looking good on billboards. Imagine if you could make such baseless promises for any job you applied for - and then never had to stand by the promises you made. It would certainly make interviews a hell of a lot easier.

"If you give me this job I will triple productivity, halve expenditure and leave the entire company feeling satisfied and happy".

"You didn't manage to do any of those things"

"Oh Sorry, the outgoing employee left the position in a much worse situation than I had realised when I made those statements. I think I'll give myself a raise now."

Anarchy could work in NZ. We don't care enough to run riot and its full of people that know what the law is without ever having read it.

Careful what you wish for, look at what is going on in the Arab states!

You sure have an interesting analysis of the Arab uprisings. It looks to me like they are attempting to replace the current 'wankers with guns' with something resembling representative democracy.

Besides, I think what these folks are suggesting is Anarchism (no rulers, not "no rules") rather than anarchy (chaos).

We operate in an Anarchistic way a lot of the time. Some of the key principles of Anarchism are mutual aid (helping each other out), solidarity (sticking by each other) and consensus based decision making (rather than loudest/most wins). Don't need a politician to decide which way to go when you're on a group ride. :)

I have argued that if there was a box that said "No parties, no members" on an election form, and for every 5% that got they would throw a seat out of parliament.......you would get record turnout at the polls.
I estimate that 4 or so seats would go also......

By bikers for bikers and ordinary people.

Platform is basically thus far.

Reversal of the ACC levies on motorcycles with review and then fair spread of fees across all road users. Also to levy user rather than vehicle.

Good food tax structure. Lower taxes/GST on healthy foods, raise them on unhealthy foods.

More to come.
