The world famous MMMMM Ride is on again 2-3 July :woohoo:

UPDATE 27/6: ROUTE SHEETS NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD - See p3 of this thread. Print them out & bring them!

See calendar entry here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2825&day=2011-7-1

Please register so I can keep track of numbers.

The format will be a bit different this year due to part of the route being washed out & the accomodation at the station not being available.

Initially there will have to be two groups for Saturday Morning - the Cool Team & the Warm Team. To be in the Cool Team you will need some combination of lightish bike, knobbyish tyres & riding ability plus a willingness to possibly get wet feet. To be in the Warm Team you just need any sort of adv bike & to be more sensible than those in the Cool Team. The Waikaremoana road is quite slippery in places at present so less experienced riders & those on big bikes will enjoy themselves much more on knobbyish tyres.

The Cool Team will kick off from the Rangitaiki Tavern on the Napier-Taupo Rd Saturday morning at 8am sharp. There is food, beer, basic cabins, a 5 bed house & camping there for those who want to arrive Friday night. Phone them on 07 384 2803 to book yourself a bed.

More comfy accomodation, & extra bunks are also available 5km back down the road towards Taupo at the Rangitaiki Lodge. They have a couple of nice motel units, some tidy cabins & a bunkhouse. Call them on 07 384 2800 to book. As the Lodge bar usually closes at 8 the main gathering/meal/beers will be back at the pub.

8am Saturday the Cool Team will leave the Pub & head North along the Waipunga Rd. There is a crossing washed out not far from the highway so there is a short offroad section around that, it's not too bad but it would take too long to get a big group with a few less capable bikes/riders through & could be a bit wet if the stream is up, hence the Cool/Warm split. We will use the cornerman system through the forest.

The Cool & Warm teams will meet at the Minginui Road turnoff on SH38 9:30ish, leaving there at 10am.

The Warm Team can do whatever they like before that, stay in Rotorua, Murupara, Galatea, Awakeri or whatever. Watch out for ice on the roads if it is a frosty morning.

As a lukewarm combination we will then continue on through Waikaremoana, Wairoa, Tiniroto & a few backroads to Matawai. I have written up a route sheet so people can do their own pace Minginui - Matawai & have the choice of bypassing Wairoa on backroads if time & fuel range permits. You need 230km fuel range to bypass Wairoa.

At Matawai you can stay in the Pub, ph 06 862 4874, or the campground which has heaps of bunks, ph 06 867 5016 or 027 445 8755. The pub does dinner but with enough numbers & interest we could do a BBQ at the campground instead.

On the Sunday we'll head out to Matawai then off down the Motu Rd to Opotiki, From there the route is routesheeted again via some highway & a few more backroads back to my place at Rotoiti.

Any trailer scum planning to attend are welcome to drop their car & trailer at my place for the weekend.

Further details will be added to this post as we get more organised.

Remember this is a MIDWINTER ride. Based on previous MMMMM rides there is a 100% chance it will rain, a 66.6% chance of snow, an 80% chance it will be bloody cold & a 100% chance that all those mad enough to do the whole ride will have lots of fun. The Warm Team route is all tar & gravel roads, nothing technical, some of the gravel is often fairly rough & muddy though.

Distances:

Taupo - Rangitaiki Pub - 35 km (no fuel)
Rangitaiki Pub - Minginui - 75km (no fuel)
Minginui - Waikaremoana 70km (thats 180km from Taupo - pack extra gas if you've got a small tank)
Waikaremoana - Wairoa 60km (Waikaremoana - Matawai on Ohuka Rd etc 230km)
Wairoa - Matawai 180km
Matawai - Opotiki 75km

Cheers

Clint What do you mean by light bikes??

I mean if you're not a skilled rider you need a light bike & grippy knobs. Anyone with moderate riding ability on something like a DR or KLR with 1/2way decent tyres will be ok, & I know plenty of people who could punt their KTM9x0 or 1200GS through no problem. What I don't want is n00bs on 200+ kg bikes & road rubber.

Cary, you could probably ride it on the Tiger ok as it was last weekend, it's only a km or so & there is more of a 4x4 track around it now compared to what we did on the way to the Pukemanu. However part of the route runs down a stream bed & as Confucius say, you can't ride through the same stream twice. It could change.

Not sure on the Friday arvo route, I'm not entirely keen on doing the challenge section in the dark, but if I can knock off early that Friday we will go over through the forest, will check the work situation the week before & keep you updated.

If you don’t fancy a chilly night at the Rangitaiki Tavern, followed by an obscenely early start to ride over muddy goat tracks and through freezing cold streams, then Team Warm may be for you.

By joining Team Warm you will be still be able to enjoy the scenic Waikaremoana and Motu roads, and may even enjoy them more because you won’t be trying to defrost from early morning stream crossings 900m above sea level.

Fellow Team members are welcome to meet us at the Minginui Rd turnoff on the Saturday morning, but for the full Warm experience, come stay in Rotorua on Friday night, and join the rest of the Team for dinner and a few drinks. We’ll meet up again on Saturday morning, and head off for the lukewarm rendezvous with the Cool Team.

Let me know if you are thinking of joining us in Rotorua, and we can start to come up with a plan.

Good stuff, I think the KTM would be overkill for Wade, based on the way that KLR was going down on the last 'Naki ride. (when it was going )

I'm in, unless I'm threatened with immediate dismissal from my job of course. I'm dead keen on the "wet", I reckon the TTR250 with T63's should hang in there....I should manage with only a small amount of tears. If the weather is really shit I'll go soft and join the shameful "warm" team, I'll decide closer to the time. I'll be sleepin' in my Hennessey hammock somewhere close to the start point, so I'll have to carry a bit of gear throughout...lucky I have the best NZ adventure bike ever built.:yes:

Apologies but I won't be joining the MMMM this year. However I have a suggestion for any Cool Team riders who can get to Rangitaiki tavern early on Friday arvo. That is to ride (legit) in the Rangitaiki conservation area, the access track is 2.5 km east of the tavern.

The pumice based tracks are easy going and you find some interesting terrain to play on. Rogerh and I were trailriding here at queens birthday. There is a 35km loop but the far end (spot track 3) is too difficult for most adventure bikes (dare I say)And you will need to caculate on using extra fuel.

Looks like we're heading for a good turnout :2thumbsup

I'm planning on doing a pre ride next weekend & writing up a routesheet for the Minginui-Matawai section, to give people the option of some more backroads & to let everyone do their own pace. So if you don't have a 'lunchbox' routesheet holder get or make one, or bring some A4 ziplock bags to put the instructions in. It will not be a complicated route, it's all public roads. Watch this space next Monday for a copy of the routesheet.

Hi Kev, there is no other short way around from Rangitaiki. Your mate will have to go to Taupo, through Reporoa then up through Murupara. Allow at least 1.5 hrs.

Stand by for route sheets.

Here ya go, PRINT THIS OUT! BRING IT! READ THE NOTES!

If you are coming with mates that aren't on KB or might not see this, print them out a copy too.

All the turns in the route sheet are signposted intersections so it should be easy to follow. I have given all the road names so it should be easy to go through & load up a route with all the turns to your GPS if you have one.

Leaving my place 1pm Friday for the trip to Rangitaiki via Minginui & the 1st part of the course in reverse if anyone wants to join in. You will need about 240km fuel range for this bit as we need to get from Murupara - Rangitaiki & back through to Waikaremoana on a tank.

Parts of the Waikaremoana Rd were quite slippy so those with less experience or on bigger bikes will enjoy this section much more if they have tyres with some degree of knobbyness.

I need someone to go tail end charlie for the forest section on Saturday. Anybody? If you don't have a hi-vis vest I'll bring one for you. To avoid confusion I'd also like to ask that nobody else wears hi-vis for this section, you can put it back on at Minginui where the routesheeted section starts.

Also, if there is anyone that has some mechanical & tyre changing skill & tools, and enjoys doing a sedate pace you are welcome to apply for the job of sweep rider for a section or 2 - Minginui to Waikaremoana Camp, there to Tiniroto, & Tiniroto to Matawai. I don't mind doing it if nobody else is keen.

There will be no sweep for those heading into Wairoa on routesheet option (1). The sweep rider will be leaving the Tiniroto Pub at 3pm. Be gone by then if you want to be swept.

Cheers
Clint

For those warm souls who will be staying in Rotorua on Friday night: Shall we get together for food and beverages?

I'm happy to host a beer and pizza evening at my place, or we can meet up somewhere in town. Let me know the preferred option, and we will come up with a plan.

On Saturday morning we'll meet at BP Geyser at the southern end of Fenton Street (the wide street with all the motels on it) at 8am, ready to depart before 8.15. From there we'll just be following the highway to Minginui (SH5 to Rainbow Mountain, then SH 38 from there).

You should be ok. It's not hell technical, easy trail ride sorta stuff, a DR on MT21's will be fine, it's more the 1150GS on road tyres with a n00b pilot kinda thing that I don't want in there.

...& a note to any MMMMM n00bs in the Cool Team, especially those from warmer northern climates :sunny: : just because the forecast is for calm sunny weather does not mean warm! Rangitaiki will likely be brutally, frostily, foggily, icily cold Sat am. :cold: Those riding out from Taupo or Napier in the morning should allow plenty of time & watch out for icy patches on SH5.

Cheers

+1 heed the mans advice.

Last year while it was a lovely day the ride from Taupo out to the pub in the morning was cold enough to form ice on the front of our bikes and jackets, and for the 950 to drop to 1 cylinder.

So now you ride a DR and don't have to worry about dropping down to one cylinder, since it only has one....:shit::killingme

Has anyone managed to get through to the Camp ground at Matawai? (Trying to book a bed for Saturday night.)

All I get is voicemail.. I've left messages but he hasn't returned my calls.

edit: I just got through. They still have a few bunks left.

Use the phone number in Clints first post... not the ones on yellow pages/internet

And to rob all warmth from the hot pie I got at the servo in Taupo I stuffed in my jacket by the time we got to the pub

Many, many thanks once again Clint & Rosie for organising such a great weekend. One day I'll do both days. . . .but wot a fab :woohoo: but chilly :cold: one day it was! Gather it was down to 3c in places with our ride over from the Bay. Though no ice on the road, & goggles frozen in the inside like last year so quite pleasant. Hey did anyone get a temp reading around Lake Waikeremoana??? . . . . as my fingers were like blocks of ice!!
Enjoyed the little off road section & the stream crossings.
Awesome to meet alot of new faces & many from previous KB rides . . . & especially so many ladies :woohoo::woohoo: 9 of us all up. Must be a record, not even surpassed by the roadies & summer Harley gals. LOL !!! Lovely to meet you all girls & I hope you weren't too sore this am. Only one day & my shoulder muscles were sore. :violin: Thanks for merino knicker tip Clare, I will be into Kathmandu as soon as. Safe trip back guys n gals.

Thanks Clint & Great photos Bart. I have tagged along on four of these famous MMMMM rides, using them as a day trip from Napier. This years one was very average in the weather dept, but it did have one standout feature. Nine female adventure riders is pretty impressive at any event, let alone such a hardcore ride in the middle of winter. ( I even know some guys that are too pussey to do this ride :cold: ) So, good effort girls, & if you keep going to this ride you may be lucky enough to experience the most beautiful snow covered scenery i have ever seen while crossing the summit 2 years ago. :drinknsin

Hi, looks like it was a great trip
I couldn't make it, but hope to come along next year.

In the meantime I'd like to try out the 1st part of the ride from the Napier/Taupo road through to Minginui sometime.
- Does anyone have route details for getting through here?
- or even better, did anyone take a GPS and have a route file they could share?

A few people recorded a GPS track so hopefully one of them will chime in. I wouldn't recommend trying to find your way through there without one. Also be aware that the route we took is a public access easement, stay on that & you're fine, but for virtually all of the other forestry tracks & roads in that area a permit is required.

Cheers
