View Full Version : How do you ride 400s??

Jessus!! I put on my suit and tried to ride my 400 around corners last night and fuck me, is it difficult or what!! Maximum respect to you guys who are 6 ft + who ride 400s or 250s like these. I am only about 5'9 but I started getting cramps and shit from the squating position of riding my CBR400RR with after market rearsets that are put even higher up than standard. I reckon I'll give up on the hanging off style of riding with this bike and just stay put on the sucker! Riding my GSXR600 is a comfertable breeze through fluffy clouds compared to the ridiculous squatting position of riding the CBR.
Oh well, rant over... I'll harden up and maybe grow some leg mussels and start streching hard out for going on rides. I guess it will only get worst when I progress onto a RS125 a bit later on so it's all good training for the body and mind.

How do I ride 400s?
I don't.
I've never actually ridden a 400. I rode a GT380 once, and nearly rode a TS400, but that's the nearest I've come.

I remember feeling quite happy on my CBR250.. Then I got on the 636 and it felt like climbing on a monster truck. Now I'm used to the 636. I sat on a CBR250 after 6 months of not touching one, and it was the most bizarre feeling ever. And knowing I used to scrape my feet on the floor, hacking it round Puke..

ditto to all said above.
The zxr (although one of the bigger 400's) is still a crackerbox compared to the cbr :Punk:

how did you find mine? apart from the clutch which was tricky, but mines not too bad
rode to the south island over summer and put some decent distance on it, you must just be getting old.

You'r one was sweet as eh. We can swap bikes for a bit and you can ride mine if you are keen to try it out tomorrow. The aftermarket rearsets really makes it quite very cramped up.
I maybe getting a bit old but I am still a week younger than you, you old bugger!

On the track you ride em the same way you do 600s. Cane the living tits off of em.
The cramps go away after a while, its just muscles being tensed up you havn't used before. I used to get a sore back when I wore leathers because they pulled down on my shoulders. No problems when I had the synthetics on.
If you find your getting sore arms/shoulders/hands then your entire body position and technique is wrong.

I will try to do that, OLD friend!
27 - I think I need to work and adjust to a new technique that works for this bike. I'll find out how I go tomorrow.
Cheers.
I've just come back from a spin on a 2002 YZF1000 - no way,I could never live with a bike like that,I don't know how you guys do it,sooooo uncomfortable,it doesn't interest me at all.

Ha ha, that would be like an up market lazy boy compaired to my 400. You are welcome to try it out and see for yourself.
My DRZ400 was sweet.... Nnd my CB400F... and my CX400C and my CB360G... but then they weren't pretending to be a race bike - Just everyday fun practical motorcycles.

So you're not talking about the R1? You mean the Thunderace? For gawds sake, don't ride a gixxer then!!
It's all about what you get used to. If I ride a dirt bike or anything that has a sit up and beg riding posi it feels sooooo wrong. I rode a Evo summut once- had to keep reminding myself not to lean forward.

either though i have ridden a couple but, never in anger. some laws of physics cant be bent, dosen't matter how many times you try!

Only other road bike I've ridden is a AX100 so I really have no idea how much better a bigger bike is in comfort compared to my 250. I'm about 6" now, I get a sore back and wrists while riding but its worth it

the secret is to keep the revs above 9.5k and go like snot. then when you get on the long straights just let your legs dangle to get the circulation back. only take 30 mins for my legs to fall asleep. its when they wake up again they hurt.

Good Lord. Is it really worth it ? I can't imagine doing that sort of thing for 5 or 6 hundred k.

ZXR400s are way more roomer plus I had standard rear sets in all of them. Anywhoo, I already said it's no biggie and I know I'll get used to it. That's all there is to it. Once you get used to small bikes, big bikes feel huge and vv.
But this CBR really is exceptionally cramped! No worries though, I am already sorting out my riding to adapt.

I rode my CBR400RR from Auck to Tokoroa and back in one day, damn I was so sore, a lot to do with rider fitness, but still a real grind.
I loved both of mine, did not have any major issues... but hey Im a short arse :D
Nice choice Sudeep!

But you'll be regulary stopping for fuel so you'll stretch your legs often enough

9.5k? You want to stay above 15k where it reaches the top end :yeah: (at least on the 250, not sure about 400s)

Dunno,I don't keep up with the trends these days,but it was fat anyway.I've ridden a few sports bikes,some I feel at home on,some I don't - bikes I don't feel at home on I don't like.
So this'd be more you, Mr Motu? Honda Fireblade, well it was once......

MR, you could always get something a "bit" bigger?

as opposed to something lower?

I have to admit when I had the FZR 250 I felt like I was doing the Preying Mantis on it. Tuck down Behind the screen, how the hell do you do that when the screen is sitting below your chest. I felt like one of those clowns in the circus on the really small bikes. Hence we parted company early.

Ride a BSA bantam (D1 even) and you'll learn high speed streamlining :)

this is kind of is my point about what to do with F3 - you think a 400 is bad try squeezing onto a 125! (are you sure you wanna do that MR?) 125s are ideal performance wise and cost wise (to replace F3) and have the advantage of being purpose built race bikes.... and I know there are some 6' people around who ride them and say it's fine but shit - they're tiny. I get cramp racing my RGV; a 125 would require me having to become a grade 17 yoga expert. Dunno how those 6 footers cope. (im 5'10") Guess I'm getting old and rusty (into me 30s now).....
I've still got this YZF1000 here, and I can't believe how ungainly these things are! I ride adventure bikes and think they are a bit tall - this thing is low...but the seat is wide and I'm on tippy toes with my legs stuck out to the side.I had to turn it around this morning, just out the door and into the next bay...but it couldn't make the turn and I had to back up looking like a learner and have another stab at it...but then I realise this thing has such heavy steering and poor low speed stability that I might get into trouble just riding it into my workshop....so have to back up and take a run on with some speed up.No wonder you guys on sports bikes are dropping like flies - on my own bikes I can do a full lock turn at walking pace picking my nose,on this thing I look like some old fart who hasn't ridden for 20 yrs.And learner riders all want a sports bike...no wonder we have problems.

Dropping like flies? Not me......anyways a 600 or 1000 fits me perfect, just not a 125 - agree sportbikes suck to manoeuvre at low speeds but get 'em cranking and suddenly their shape/riding postion all makes sense.
