View Full Version : Rego consequences

I have been thinking. Well, it is a bank holiday.
I now have an off-road bike. Sold my road legal trial bike etc. becuase the rego was too expensive what with two cars. So, I can't help but look at bikes because I'm a biker. Before, I was looking at cheap bikes, cheap fuel, cheap running etc - but I only ride on weekends. Now, becuase of expensive rego, I'm thinking ... big bike. I'm looking at 1000cc sports bikes -- to get my 'rego' money's worth. I imagine others will think likewise, like, why bother with a small bike?
Biking is no longer cheap so may as well get a big 'un again.

That was my attitude when I sold the Bold'or,
Really Why pay the same rego for a bike with 70hp when Its the same price to rego a bike with 170hp
And if you have more than 2 bikes why not have ones that look identical but are Not.......that helps reduce rego cost:innocent:

Whole can of worms open here. My KLR 650 doesn't even have 40 horsepower and I gotta pay full rego. Now that ain't value for money is it??. There should be some other criteria for rego costs.

I imagine people with 650cc bikes will be looking at drastically lower resale values. Also, I imagine there might be some 600cc bikes that are like, 601cc.

Unforteunately when you crash(hopefully not)the body repairs cost the same whether large or small size bike,i.e intensive care costs, surgery costs etc,and that's what the bastards are trying to recover at a vastly distortred rate, compared to those that don't pay rego etc, like quad accidents, off road accidents with vehicles not needing rego.

Sold the road bike and only go dirt now. Road riding is too expensive largely thanks to Nick Smith, and you have to share the road with too many myopic fucktards. Off road, more fun and cheaper too.

Meh, can't be buggerd with something you have to trailer everywhere - hence why I don't have a dirt-only bike, a jet-ski or a boat.

Well that is a downside. I have to rely on mates with utes. Plus you have much more options in regards to rides down there. Me, well I got sick of Rimutaka bloody hill every Sunday.

Love both, dirt and road so will do what it takes to indulge my passion. They could put bike rego up to $2000 a year i would still pay it. They are still making money after all. Im just glad I can earn good money doing what I love doing.:woohoo:

The 650cc thing is bollocks. I can't think of a 650cc bike that would be utterly overwhelming for a n00b let alone a BAB. I can think of plenty of 599cc missiles that that would make '90s Superbikes look fat, slow and lumbering.
The only bike I can think of that is nominally 600cc but bigger than 599cc is Yamaha's SRX600 @ 608cc.

The 'problem' is the income compensation. Owners of big bikes (ha!) tend to have higher incomes than those on small bikes. Which is why Nick the Prick said big bike accidents cost more
However, this is also bullshit as a reason for the split levies. Your vehicle levy does not go into the income fund (which you are already paying into from your wage/salary at the appropriate rate), but if you are injured on your bike, your treatment/compensation is paid for from the vehicle fund.
At least, this is what I've been told is the case. If it isn't, then you've already covered your income from your earnings and it has nothing to do with what size bike you ride.
The whole thing is and was a crock of shit.

Totally agree, compare a CBR600RR 110 hp against a DL650 (V-Strom) 60 hp, the laws were made by people who clearly don't ride bikes or if they do, don't have a clue.

Because not everyone wants 170hp, I don't think I've ever had a bike with more than 80hp and I think it unlikely I ever will because of the type of bikes I like

that attitude is the minority, and thats the way they want it.
I say fuck them, and have a litrebike, and unless its outside of my control, I will not go back to a smaller capacity machine.

There is the 636 Ninja as well, if you could say 36cc is nominal.

No you couldn't. You missed my point completely. If there HAS to be differential Rego charging then the 636 SHOULD be charged the most expensive levy. Put a '95 ZX7RR on the track with a 636 and watch the 636 sprint into the distance.
I personally think that if there HAS to be graduated tiers of Rego then it should be on a power to weight ratio, not a cc rating. A Wee-Strom and a 636 are in no way similar and one could easily be ridden as a first bike by a learner. It isn't the 636.

Probably a bigger can of worms.
Having the line at 600 rather than 650 however is fucking stupid.

I've thought about putting a KLR600 barrel on and re-vinning as a 600 (assuming they use the engine capacity that is cast into the side of the barrel as the indicator of size.)
Even with the cost of re-vinning it wouldn't take to long to recoup the costs in terms of difference between under/over 600.
Wouldn't take too long to put the 650 barrel back on either.
