Righty-o, came to a bit of a decision on the weekend after a good ride out to Nuhaka with a mate on Sunday, its time to sell my Gixxer and buy something newer, and more importantly, learner legal. Picked the old girl up last year hoping the LAMS law would come into effect but it hasn't, and i'd rather not risk the fines, not to mention my bikes nearly 30 years old... Settled on a couple of options at the mo, main one being the GT250R, is it as good as it looks? Read some of the US and Aussie reviews of it, some say its bollocks, some say its great and can't fault it, so far its the one thats swayed me the most, being a V-twin rather than a parallel or single like the other new 250s, and it looks the best of the lot, with the exception of the R125 but im sold on a 250 if its a 4 smoker, Only other bike i'm really keen on is the Aprillia RS125. Not really keen on anything pre 2006 as i'd say most smaller bikes will have been dropped and dinged and im after something mint, something that handles well as my Gixxers just plain sketchy to ride at times and also something I can learn to ride properly and push a little, seeing as i've never ridden anything smaller than a 400. Would be grateful if anyone can share their experiences with the Hyosung and if its not as great as I seem to think it is, whats a good alternative? Bearing in mind im reluctant to go back to a 250 never mind something thats single cylinder or parallel, god they sound ugly...

Mhmm, I know... :brick:

Fucken stupid, but in my defence working 13 hour days doesnt leave you much time to do much, especially when your boss doesnt give a rats arse if its not work related or a dire emergency, been through the road code countless times now, just need to sit the friggin test...

Mully on here has an RS125 for sale. It's on his sig.

That'd be my choice over the Hyosung.

There's not really anything wrong with Hyosungs but a good (better) alternative that would also fit your criteria would be the Honda VTR250. Here's one (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-382338263.htm).

RS250 Aprilia is what you need if you want the best 250 bar none. Hyosungs are fine for gettin about, but riding bikes should be so much more.

id go with a zxr or fzr or similar over a hyosung anyday, the hyo`s do look the part but thats all they do. the older japas will out perform a hyosung in every way

Call in sick and get your licence, it's easy! Then once you've spent 15 minutes doing that go ride a VTR250 and a 250 Hornet. I've had both, as well as a Hyosung, and I reckon the Hondas are a better buy. Resale is better, build quality is better, they look better, and they are real fun to ride. Don't rate the Hyosung from personal experience. Apart from the fact you'll be embarassed to tell anyone what you ride, the quality of them varies massively from bike to bike. Buy the Honda, keep it for 9 months to get your licence, then get a new Gixxer!!

I had a Hyo GT250R as a learner bike. The only problem I had was the weight of it compared to my lil size and doing a u-turn for my full was a heart stopping moment. My daughter has been learning on the GT250 Comet. I rode it home the other week for her from town and after being on my 650 Comet for a while, I found it to be gutless as! I must say though, that it is much lighter than my 650 and doing a u-turn on the comet is way easier than on the R.

Parts are cheap if they break down. If you get later model ones as opposed to the earlier models, I think there are less issues with them. I know there were a few problems with cam chain tensioners in the early ones but I think they ironed that out from about 2008 on.

As for the comment on not wanting to admit to owning one, what complete bollocks! They look good and go well if looked after. I like mine and itś great for commuting to and from work as well as for the longer road trips Iīve done.

Probably though, you should take some bikes for a test ride to get your own idea of the ride and whether you will like it. I know you say time isnīt on your side, but really itīs the only way to find out. I know that if I had riddent the 250R before buying it (I bought it brand spankers 2008 model) I probably wouldnīt have bought it.

The hyosungs look good and would be good as a commuter, but as a sportsbike... my mate had 1, took it up to 180kmh on the motorway and rear cylinder seized... nuff said. I used to rape my '89 cbr250 all day everyday and it never missed a beat. But you want late model so VTR250, easy choice. You wont be able to kill it and itl be huge fun.

The old "My Mate" syndrome strikes again. If "your mate" seized his GT250 Hyosung at 180kph, then it was probably more to do with the copious amounts of Nitrous Oxide he was feeding it or the 16psi of boost the turbo was pumping rather than the fact there was a fault with the Hyosung.

"Your mate" needs to get a grip on reality.

took it up to 180kmh

He wasn't riding a Hyosung.

He wasn't riding a Hyosung.

Not a GT250R for sure! Top speed is 150kph at a push on a stocker. Unless he weighs next to nothing and is small enough to totally hide behind the fairing... but then he'd have a whole different set of problems before the cylinder seized on him
