View Full Version : Jesus is a cunt
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5119068/Police-seize-profane-clothing-in-Invercargill
Clothing that describes Jesus Christ as a profanity was seized from a south Invercargill store by police yesterday.
Police took away the offending apparel after being asked to do so by Internal Affairs.
The tops would be sent to the department which would decide, after consulting with police, whether the owners of theImpuls'd store which sells them would be charged with any criminal offences.
The Southland Times yesterday revealed the store, owned byWarren and Angela Skill, was selling hooded tops with the words "Jesus is a c***" emblazoned on the back.
Sergeant Brock Davis, of Invercargill, said police visited the store mid-afternoon and seized between 10 and 15 hooded tops and long-sleeved T-shirts with the offending words on them. The owner was co-operative, he said.
People have been seen wearing the tops on city streets in the past week, with a 68-year-old visitor to the city saying she was horrified when she saw a man walking along Dunns Rd with the offending words emblazoned across his back.
For fucks sake, if we are going to ban things just because a few people might get offended, we will have to ban everything.
Had to laugh at the double standards here:
Mr Skill showed another example of his merchandise – a shirt bearing the words "F*** me Jesus", but said police had "not been interested in it".

offensive language is more the issue isn't it? If you wear a Tee shirt saying "I don't believe in Jesus" you will offend some people but the cops wont be around to take it off you.

If you want to wear a t shirt that says 'I dont believe in Jesus' thats cool but wearing a shirt that says anyone is a c%nt is just a bridge too far.
Since only an immature attention seeking moron with a broken sense of community would wear such a garment, and goodness knows we have them by the bucketfull, I think possession should be automatic death penalty... That way you can get to see if indeed there IS a god and call him (or her) a C%nt face to face....

its interesting to me because of the word "cunt"
its one of the few very taboo words still left I think. But less so than it used to be: I've heard it a few times on TV even. (I think Sopranos, maybe even Outrageous Fortune? Deadwood?). I wonder if thats a sign of its increasing "Acceptability?" in society generally? In five years will we be wondering what the fuss was about, like we do know with old paradigms of censorship?
it is quite interesting I think. But the retards in Invergiggle? they should get back to rooting their sisters and mothers and benefit fraud, its what they do best.
oh yeah, and in Entourage Ari calls someone a "Cuntmuscle" and Mrs Ari is offended: Really Ari? "cuntmuscle"?

Bingo. Those jumping up and down about religious censorship are rather misguided - but then anyone who would want to wear such a shirt is probably a brainless knuckle-dragger.
Similarly, those who are offended that their "right" to cause mindless offence is curtailed, are unlikely to see the irony.

Yes it is an offence in itself.... offensive language, offensive behaviour, behaviour likely to cause violence etc etc.
If someone shouted that sentence out in Invercargill to that old lady, she would likely still show the same offence to the statement and the offending person could be arrested and charged.
It is about maintaining a degree of public order and decency. Like it or not a line has to be drawn somewhere and we have legislation and common law that supports this. Basically if an ordinary person would find the use of the C word in public offensive, then it is. Printed words are the same as spoken in this regard.

I get that, and I agree. What i find harder to agree with is banning a CD on the grounds it is objectionable: note here that the sound recording is objectionable, not the cover art. So they cant even sell this in a brown paper bag.
But the issue is if I go to buy a Cannibal Corpse CD, I know what I am getting, I am unlikely to be offended by it, and am a volunteer: i.e. no one is forcing me to listen. My view therefore is that that if you want to listen to it, you should be able to: and obviously if there is some concern there is a mechanism to address that: R18 etc.
As so often is the case in these debates, the issue really isnt whether a line should be drawn or not (the child porn example) but exactly where that line falls: Any sane person agrees with the "no kiddie porn" but whether Cannibal Corpse is offensive per se is another question.
Remember the insane fearmongering in the 80's about heavy metal (and the PMRC and all that bullshit), banning Ozzy Osbourne's "Suicide Solution" (without, apparently, ever listening to the anti-suicide lyrics!) even banning the Sex Pistols (no swearing in God Save the Queen - well, not much).
Later there was the same response to gangster rap. Usually made by people who had sung in choirs, finished school, and weren't thugs. (some were, or course).
I find it very interesting.

We all have very different views on what we deem acceptable, permissable or offensive.
Many here probably don't mind the shirt, others will find it repulsive.
What if other shirts were sold that covered other groups, views or issues that each one of us found in some way objectional.
These are example slogans and are not aimed at causing any offence but to provoke thought that we all get offended in some way by something.
It is more about being objective in our thinking.
Now some examples that would no doubt stir:
Muhammad is a terrorist.
I like your daughter, can I take a photo.

Bollocks. All religions are intolerant of others beliefs at their core. Its what differentiates them one from the other. We have the one true answer, the others are heathen scum. Thats the message. The delivery ranges from late night american fundie televangelists, to "More tea, vicar?" but the message stays on point.
Oh, and all religions are intolerant of atheism particularly.

I'll take my chances, but thanks for your concern.
Just to clarify, "Darwin" in this context is a one-word talisman (make of that word what you will) for the whole of humankind's progress from single celled organism to where we are today, good and bad, and is shorthand for things like the Enlightenment, the scientific method, progress, replacing myth with reason, all that stuff: not Bronze Age superstition.
Don't make me roll out my Dawkins quotes, and my armoury of cartoons taking the piss out of religion. I dont really want to go there, but I will if I have to. ;)

Oh, and all religions are intolerant of atheism particularly.
I find the converse to be just as true, if not more so. Speaking of words I had to check the meaning of, where's hitcher and his PD warning? :hitcher: bit overdue in here I think :innocent:
What would the result be if the shirt said 'darwin is a cunt' or 'you're a cunt' I reckon it'd be the same.

There are only 3 certainties in life:
1. Death
2. Taxes
3. Someone preaching to you that God can get you out of death and taxes

Whoever we are
Wherever we're from
We shoulda noticed by now
Our behavior is dumb
And if our chances
Expect to improve
It's gonna take a lot more
Than tryin' to remove
The other race
Or the other whatever
From the face
Of the planet altogether
They call it THE EARTH
Which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right
'Cause we behave the same...
We are dumb all over
Dumb all over,
Yes we are
Dumb all over,
Near 'n far
Dumb all over,
Black 'n white
People, we is not wrapped tight
Nurds on the left
Nurds on the right
Religous fanatics
On the air every night
Sayin' the Bible
Tells the story
Makes the details
Sound real gory
'Bout what to do
If the geeks over there
Don't believe in the book
We got over here
You can't run a race
Without no feet
'N pretty soon
There won't be no street
For dummies to jog on
Or doggies to dog on
Religous fanatics
Can make it be all gone
(I mean it won't blow up
'N disappear
It'll just look ugly
For a thousand years...)
You can't run a country
By a book of religion
Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon
Of foolish rules
Of ancient date
Designed to make
You all feel great
While you fold, spindle
And mutilate
Those unbelievers
From a neighboring state
TO ARMS! TO ARMS!
Hooray! That's great
Two legs ain't bad
Unless there's a crate
They ship the parts
To mama in
For souvenirs: two ears (Get Down!)
Not his, not hers, (but what the hey?)
The Good Book says:
("It gotta be that way!")
But their book says:
"REVENGE THE CRUSADES...
With whips 'n chains
'N hand grenades..."
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS?
Have another and another
Our God says:
"There ain't no other!"
Our God says
"It's all okay!"
Our God says
"This is the way!"
It says in the book:
"Burn 'n destroy...
'N repent, 'n redeem
'N revenge, 'n deploy
'N rumble thee forth
To the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
'Cause they don't go for what's in the book
'N that makes 'em BAD
So verily we must choppeth them up
And stompeth them down
Or rent a nice French bomb
To poof them out of existance
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
To use again
For temples in which to praise OUR GOD
("Cause he can really take care of business!")
And when his humble TV servant
With humble white hair
And humble glasses
And a nice brown suit
And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls
Tells us our God says
It's okay to do this stuff
Then we gotta do it,
'Cause if we don't do it,
We ain't gwine up to hebbin!
(Depending on which book you're using at the
time...Can't use theirs... it don't work
...it's all lies...Gotta use mine...)
Ain't that right?
That's what they say
Every night...
Every day...
Hey, we can't really be dumb
If we're just following God's Orders
Hey, let's get serious...
God knows what he's doin'
He wrote this book here
An' the book says:
He made us all to be just like Him,"
so...
If we're dumb...
Then God is dumb...
(An' maybe even a little ugly on the side)

I don't think it is all down to the religion concerned. The Christian know that they get little to no support from the government or society but due to the western society cringe factor the Muslims and other other minorities know they can make outrages complaints and somebody will listen. :shit: you can not say God bless in a school without risk of offending someone but you can have Yoga classes. Note no God was specified so the God bless is arguably applicable to most religions.

The tax exemption is meant to be for the charity work they do. The homeless would be even more worse off without them. Hence why destiny ... nah another thread.
Again the god could apply to any religion but tend to agree with you. The French are giving it a go and pissing off all equally. If I as a devout biker can't where my helmet in to the bank then why should some chick be allowed to wear a scarf?

I don't see the harm in wearing a tasteless shirt lol.
If the shirt had said "Jesus can sit on it" some people would cry, but the general public would say 'cry me a river'
If it said "Rag heads can blow me up(crossed out)...off" then everyone would go 'oh my, you can't say that, you might offend someone!'
Like they're afraid of getting blown up......terrorism does work!
As for it being against the law as being offencesive purely because one person finds it offencesive, can we get ugly chicks banned? they're pretty offensive....

Just what i was thinking. Wouldn't want my kids walking down the street to be able to read such a thing on a T shirt. Not worried about the Jesus portion, but the other segment i can live without.

I think it is partly because of my upbringing and generational "standards" for the want of a better word!
I wouldn't want my Nanna to be confronted by one of those and I would want to protect her from any discomfort caused by it!

Actually, here's an idea. One could go up to him and ask "How's the weather up there Jesus" but use the hey-zues pronunciation, then laugh, walk away, and find a comfortable place to sit and watch while the moron tries to figure out what the insult was, bonus points if he gets the high horse reference.

I hope it is not a generational thing though I do know what we find offensive changes as attitude change. I think it is the confrontation language, the attack on a person, real or imagined, and the attack on peoples belief systems. You know it was done to offend so it does and this is also why its supporters find it so attractive.

Yes, I suspect a lucid explanation from the wearer of the hoodie/t-shirt as to why that slogan appeals to them would be unlikely.
More likely the explanation would be "'cos it's cool eh".

One of my friends cousins had one of these shirts on at Big Day Out about 5 years ago when he was 14. I remember thinking it was awesome and cool, simply cause it was so offensive about things I got told you're not allowed to be offensive about. And when you've just become a teenager anything that gives you some power of offending those that control you is great! Not that anyone gave a shit at a venue like Big Day Out, don't think the guy would have worn it going shopping or anything.
