Tiniroto Rd is an excellent ride. If it's your first run through, definitely recommend during the day, as there are very few sign posts and reflective boards indicating where the road goes.
From memory, there are several corners that look deceptively shallow, and then tighten right up...

Great road but a lot rougher than SH2, also had a fuckload of cow shit when I went through but that was probably just my bad luck!

No clue... it can't be more than 100km long, probably more like 50km, so there's absolutely no reason to stop :D And yes, Tiniroto is a place. Just don't blink.

Your proposed route is my old stamping ground!
Did Tiniroto Road last year in daylight and there's beautiful scenery down that way. Lots of deciduous trees on the road edge so could be quite slippery and green at present. Came through there on the Grand Challenge last October at about midnight. There were slips everywhere and it was decidedly scary! The road north of Galatea might be a bit green too where it runs through the Matahina forest but with normal care will be ok. It's spectacularly pretty through there and worth stopping at the Matahina Dam.
Murapara is a dump - felt quite uncomfortable there when I stopped for gas once. The turn you'll take though is just before Murapara itself.
Have a great trip!

Like Mr Blackbird says, the Galatea - Matahina stretch can be a touch slippery this time of year. No reason to avoid it just allow time to do it at a leisurely pace. Probably applies to the Ngakuru - Waiotapu leg, and definately the Waioeka too.
Matahina - Opotiki I'd do the Taneatua road (turn right just after the Shell shop at Awakeri) unless you are particularly keen on going through Ohope.
Waioeka Gorge was in good condition when I did it a month ago, couple of storms have been through since then though.
Waikaremoana to Gisborne every few weeks for a couple of years we used regularly to go via Tiniroto for a change of scenery. One of those ones that you forget about until someone mentions it, haven't done it now for the better part of 20 years. Must go back.

I did it in April (re-running the 2010 GC) and it was in a lot better condition than I remembered from my first trip through many moons ago. On that occasion there was every form of four legged critter that inhabits this land wandering all over the place. Only counted 1 dog and 1 goat last time around...
The road is tight in a few places and the surface can be less than perfect in places (probably a lot potential for slips this time of the year) but it is a nice ride. Ride on :scooter:

Cutting through to Patutahi saves you time & brings you directly onto Tiniroto Rd, last went through at xmas roads where in good nick but as mentioned there has been some really yucky weather since. As long as you fill up on gas in Opotiki you should get to Wairoa via Patutahi otherwise I think there is still a gas station by the Tiniroto/coastal rd turnoff OR fill up in Gisborne

It's a little under 250kms, but on roads that aren't friendly for good economy. Best to go straight to Makaraka, fill and head south. Tiniroto Rd can be accessed by turning right at the roundabout at the end of the bridge, n'est pas?

The Waioeka Gorge is OK at the moment - I rode it on Sunday ... a few stones on the road, but otherwise OK.
It's safer to fill up in Opotiki and again in Gisborne - I could maybe make Opotiki to Wairoa on a tank of gas ... but it's borderline and I've never risked it ...
Murupara to Te Teko is often slippery - and even taking it easy is no gaurantee. A year ago my rear wheel spun up around 102 klicks on the road in the forest ... out of nowhere - I wasn't accelerating or anything - just cruising up a hill ...

EDIT: Running out of gas on the motorway of snooze, in the dark holds little joy for me...
No doubt the big girls blouse that is me, will fill at any given place if there is even the slightest risk of running out. I am trying really hard to be brave at the moment, pushing Millie as far as she will go, I really want to know what fuel range I have. These new fandangled fuel indicator thing-a-mees create more confusion than ever. I was flashing hard out the other day :innocent: and rode for what I thought was a long time. Was too pussy to ride to the place I wanted to fuel up at on the way home from work, and went through several sets of lights and roundabouts I did not need to in the quest to refuel. I still had a bit over 4 litres of fuel on board FFS!
I may have to carry a fuel can with me...

R1200GSA... rated for 33L, I'm getting more like 35-36L, just don't leave it overnight like that. They're also pretty good on gas, and with a GN in front, I was around 4.7L/100km.
Possible to get 700km+ out of a tank, but I've also used it up in 500km, with full luggage and going at a merry clip. :2thumbsup

Yeah .. and my BMW adventure bike did something past 500 klicks on a tank ... or as little as 350 klicks if I rode it hard ...
It depends on the size of the tank, how hard it's ridden ... many things ...
I could probably do Opotiki to Wairoa on a tank on the Bandits ... but I like to have fun and that decreases fuel range ...

How big's your tank?
22L from the spec sheet, but wonder about this I'm sure its slightly bigger... I was ( at the time ) trying to push my fuel range to include Wairoa to Bayview before heading to Havelock Nth/Middle Rd but Wairoa to Bayview you can't help but do at a more entertaining pace so lunch & gas re fill was warrented in Wairoa

See ... I have less than 20 litres - so Opotiki to Wairoa is a risk ...
But you should easily do Wairoa to Havelock North .. and maybe even as far as Waipawa on Middle Road with 22 litres ...
